Making my list has made me realise that even though I bought a TON of games this year, I barely played them or some not even at all. I'd say Mass Effect 2 is the one I am most disappointed about not playing, purely because I couldn't get into the first one, even though I really, really wanted to. The start is way too boring. Ugh.

Anyway, here's my list. Splinter Cell at number 1 was a tough choice, but man. I absolutely loved the new approach to the franchise, it just felt so natural to play. The fluidity of the takedowns/climbing was amazing, playing co-operatively with my friends was a fantastic experience, especially with the Mark & Execute function. I enjoyed every moment.

Some I missed out: Kane & Lynch 2, Crackdown 2, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Bioshock 2... and a lot more.

Best of 2010

Baillie: Best of 2010

1. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction
2. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
3. Limbo
4. Battlefield: Bad Company 2
5. Super Street Fighter IV
6. Red Dead Redemption
7. FIFA 11
8. Call of Duty: Black Ops
9. Halo: Reach
10. Heavy Rain

Be prepared to be flamed by almost every gamer on the internet for your number one choice. But it's a good list none the less. None of the games on your list are bad. Even though I really didn't like Heavy Rain.

@Baillie: You say you didn't play Mass Effect 2 because you couldn't stomach the first one.

But you played Brotherhood...and I have to tell you....the first Assassin's Creed was offensive. So much so I didn't even bother with 2 or brotherhood.

Bizarro topic is all I'm saying.

Conviction though, wow that took balls to make a blog post about your list and have that as your number 1.

Splinter Cell: Conviction is very under-appreciated to begin with. It's not one of my top 10 favorite games of 2010, but it was definitely a damn good game. It's not as deep as the previous Splinter Cell games, but it fresh new approach to the franchise. It certainly helps to prevent the series from becoming stale.

Conviction definitely won't be my number 1, might not make my list even but its a solid, well-made game. Good pick.

@GhostlyEnigma: Eh, no spies versus mercs and the whole 3rd person action feel kept me away.

Hopefully on the next one they do the whole "improvised Bourne Spy" like what was promised with the hobo Fisher.

Actually, the early gameplay footage of Conviction gave me more of a The Fugitive vibe than the Bourne movies. I don't know why.

@Doctorchimp: I didn't play Mass Effect 2 because I couldn't get into the start of Mass Effect 1. I know the games are going to be awesome, I'm just not a big RPG fan at all, and at the start of the first, I really wasn't fully understanding what I was meant to do, etc. I ended up getting to the mako and was getting annoyed. I didn't give it much of a chance, really. I still really, really want to play ME2, but I will complete ME1 first. I'll probably be saying this for ME3, haha.

@SecondPersonShooter: Alright here's some explanations.

10. Heavy Rain - This barely made it onto my list, I was absolutely hyped for this game, since before it was even announced. After playing Fahrenheit I was in awe. The game really did blow me away, and it was such a shame to see the end get destroyed like that due to time cuts and trying to cram a trilogy into a single game. I could not wait to see what they would do on the PS3 and well, they kind of delivered. I am disappointed, yes. The story isn't as compelling as Fahrenheit, but man it was all cool none-the-less. It was also one of the 12 games I could think of, and this had a better lasting appeal, I guess.

9. Halo: Reach - With Halo, I was a fan since the beginning, I loved Halo: CE but disliked Halo 2. I thought the campaign was all too 'meh' for me and the multiplayer didn't have anything on Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow in my eyes, that game was awesome. Halo 3 came out, and I loved the campaign purely because of the 4 player co-op. Anyway, Reach is a really good game, campaign is really fun and never seemed too frustrating on the hardest mode. Multiplayer was much better than Halo 3, but after maybe a month of playing, the thought of trying to get to Lt. Col for that achievement seemed to grind-y for me, so I put i away.

8. Call of Duty: Black Ops - BLOPS would probably be higher if I wasn't too worn out on Call of Duty. I would say Black Ops has the best campaign in the franchise to date, and the multiplayer is definitely much better than Modern Warfare 2. I am not one of those guys who say MW2 is the worst online game ever, now. Yeah, the users broke it with their mods, and all these overpowered classes/weapons, but it was still an amazing game at the core. Black Ops takes this and really balances it all up well and it's a fantastic game. Like I said, I'm burned out, so it's down at 8.

7. FIFA 11 - Alright, since FIFA 09, the franchise has been fantastic. FIFA 11 is just the best football game out there. This game would probably be up higher if it wasn't for the online bugs that seem to happen all the time. I don't really have much to say about it. It's a great game, but it's lacking with the net code.

6. Red Dead Redemption - Here's another one you guys are gonna hit me for. I've not played the full game of this, but I have played hours upon hours of online just going around with my friends - something that just wasn't fun at all on GTA IV, which sounds crazy when you think about it. I wish the game was a lot more co-op based though, sure there are some missions you can do, but why can't Rockstar make it like Saints Row 2 and have the game fully co-op, how much more awesome would that be? Anyway, like I've said, I've not finished it, but so far I love the way the game plays, I love the story and most of all, I absolutely love John Marston. He is a great character and is head and shoulders above Niko Bellic, which was a major factor in my disappointment of GTA IV.

5. Super Street Fighter IV - Well, this is street fighter and this is by far my most played game this year. I may not be very good, but man it has sucked me in and I love playing it. I played Street Fighter IV a good amount, and it was my first fighting game I actually got into, then with this iteration I have been hooked.

4. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - This is an easy choice for my favourite FPS game, purely because it enforces co-operative play - my favourite kind. I just kind of fell in love with all the different ways you could play, vehicle specialist, medic, sniper, run and gunner etc. I ended up playing as the medic a lot. I loved being able to keep my team alive and reviving dudes. Playing in a squad of friends was fantastic, you really felt powerful when everyone worked together well, it was great.

3. LIMBO - The best indy game ever made. I played it so much when it came out, and was actually one of the first dudes to find all the hidden eggs in the game. I made a guide which was greeted with a great response, I ended up playing it so much that I could complete it in about 45 minutes without dying once, haha. The look of the game was what first attracted me, then when you actually play it, it feels great. The puzzles feel really rewarding when you do them too, damn such a great game. I also got a T-Shirt and some pictures for being one of the first people to get 111%. :)

2. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - I don't care what anyone says, Assassin's Creed was an awesome game, sure it was repetitive with the 3 side missions you had to do before you went to kill your target, but so what. The game was so damn awesome to play, when I first held in the right trigger and started free-running, it felt awesome. This has barely changed in Brotherhood, just expanded upon. Then there's so much to do in this game, and nothing really feels boring. I can send assassin's on contracts, burn Borgia towers, loot chests for shop quests, rebuild the economy, have big fights with dozens of guards with fellow assassins, assassinate fools, climb the colosseum and have flashbacks with a an old lover. All of which is just so much fun.

Ezio is also a great character, so I am very pleased they brought this game out to expand on his story, I was so annoyed at the end of the second when he just got totally cut out of the story and went back to the very bland Desmond. I just don't want to spend a full game with him, ugh.

1. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction - The original 3 Splinter Cell's were awesome and I loved them very much. Chaos Theory easily topping the other two with the cool online and the superb, but underutilized co-op. Then came Double Agent and it really didn't gel with me. I thought the story was alright, but the gameplay just didn't seem to work as well as it did on the previous generation, maybe it felt dated, I don't know. I just didn't like it that much.

Conviction gets announced and it's going to take a new approach, which is what I wanted, then it finally came out and man, that game felt so damn good to play. Sam was such a bad ass. The way they seamlessly put together stealth and third-person shooting really blew my mind. I loved the animations, it is like playing Assassin's Creed, it just feels so natural to play. Being able to sneak around and actually feeling like the predator was a great new approach, much like Batman: Arkham Asylum. Mark & Execute is so fun and never felt overpowered, which was what I was most worried about.

Like I've said before, I love co-op, and Conviction does it so well. Being able to mark 8 dudes with a friend and then being able to execute them all at the same time, and if you're good, being able to Mark enemies, while executing other dudes to keep going is just such a great powerful feeling.

I'm obviously not going to be able to change anyone's mind on this subject, but I loved this game. I think what most people didn't like was how you didn't have to be so stealthy to succeed it this game, so they didn't. I always took the stealthy approach and being able to do whole missions without being seen is just such an accomplishment.

It's your list, which means you can do pretty much whatever you want. Forget the haters.

Also, it's a fine list. You acknowledge the absence of Mass Effect 2 and roll without it, a choice readers have to respect on some level.

Basically, I need to play Splinter Cell.

I've only played two of the games on your list (SSFIV and Heavy Rain), but while I could enjoy the games for what they are, I didn't enjoy them enough to put them in my own top ten.  I think the magic of Street Fighter has just worn off on me; either that, or I just prefer the feeling of playing against someone sitting next to me on a couch and not over an internet connection.

As for Heavy Rain, it's a very interesting, intriguing game.  One that I think gets a bit too much flak for being, in essence, an extensive series of quick time events, but it does it all in the service of the story.  I just wish that elements of the story could have fit together in a more cohesive fashion and didn't rely on editing tricks to hide incredibly important elements from the player.

Even if it is only number 10 it's good to see someone recognising Heavy Rain, I'm just not seeing it on many lists so far.

Its still an interesting game I'd definately rent it first or buy it a lower price used.
