I didn't see another forum for this so I thought I would bring it up, and it's clearly just a suggestion. I have no problem with the ad, let's be clear. Giant Bomb needs to make money. I would personally prefer that it sits below the top stories bar, however. Like right above where it's telling us we can now link achievements to the site. Anybody have thoughts on this?

I don't really mind where it's at right now, just as long as it isn't huge nor takes up the entire page in an annoying flash movie way.

#3 Posted by Drebin_893 (2926 posts) -

I like where it is. I like the ad. I like how Giant Bomb are making money.

#4 Posted by Blair (2525 posts) -

Yeah, I just saw it.  I really don't like the ad, but I do love Giant Bomb and thus can tolerate it.  I wish this one wasn't dedicated to pre-ordering Tekken 6 in exchange for a new in-game costume because it seems to be counter intuitive to the ideologies that are upheld by the boys.  Although, as a capitalist I say that money is money and they deserve it one way or another.

*lil shrug* S'okay where it is - it blends well enough and isn't too intrusive.

Never noticed that because I don't go on the front page much but I did to check it out and it's like Wha Bam, here I am.
Meh least it's not flash based...

#7 Posted by Milkman (17171 posts) -

I thought it was a little weird that the ad is for something that the guys usually have a pretty big gripe with. But money is money.

#8 Posted by Teptom (2047 posts) -

It surprised me a little bit, but its only the one ad. I really don't have a problem with the placement of it either.

EVERYONE CLICK THE AD!

EDIT:  They are making Tekken 6 for PSP?  Weird.....

I like it because it has its own unique artstyle that resembles the style of GiantBomb's artwork for the review Mugs, and I think its a nice and neat way of Giantbomb racking in a little bit more cash every once in a while to advance and grow, as it is a fantastic site, and I think that more people should know about it, as it is a very great and vital addition to any gamers life, and brings a lot of information, from gamers to gamers, and I love how all the knowledge of people are put tougether into a "Giant Database powered by Booze, Pancakes, and You!"

Well Played

It actually fits the page quite well.

How much money do they make per click?

Dunno but I'm gonna click
#14 Posted by cinemandrew (711 posts) -

I actually had no idea it was there. I'm using NoScript, and it doesn't even show up. I don't even get an empty box where it should be. It's as if it never existed.

My jaw drop when I first saw it, but I have always been thinking how are these guys making money?  So I just went with that Jeff was super rich from his music days.

I believe that ad is $20 CPM.

@Shini4444: Awesome.  I'm going to click it 5976589689789789 times before I go to bed.

I knew someone would have brought this up in the forums.

The ad doesn't bother me, it did catch me off guard though. Took me a minute to realize what it was.

#19 Posted by Matthew (1914 posts) -

Meh, its fine where it is.  I clicked through a couple times, even varied up where I went (Gamestop, Amazon,) just to show their links went through.  I for one, like many of the members here, welcome the ads, as long as it means the community is able to keep on going strong and those guys (and the guys upstairs) are able to keep on doing what they're really good at doing.....drinking capcom under the table!!!!!

#20 Posted by PercyChuggs (1087 posts) -

Now maybe people will shut up about the ads.

Like Giant Bomb? Stop blocking the ad and click on it every once in a while.

#21 Posted by Agnogenic_delete (1034 posts) -

I use Firefox and always have Adblock enabled so I didn't notice it.

I don't even see an add on the front page. What's it advertising?

#24 Posted by Ninja (538 posts) -

Just make sure you click on it guys so that the Namco marketing guys see how many hits they get via Giant Bomb :)

It looks fine. The positioning at the top of the page is the industry standard, and they'll get more money for it that way. Many advertisers may not even advertise at all without it being at the top of the page.

The ad is good where it is. It doesn't bother me at all.

#30 Posted by Kazona (3092 posts) -

I think it's fine where it is.

#31 Posted by MattBodega (1907 posts) -

I'm just thrilled that Giant Bomb is makin' that scrilla. At least, making scrilla that we can understand. What the hell is an Amazon Affiliate? Some kind of Space man?
Advertisement revenues, that makes sense to my pitiful earth mind.

Pretty sure it means they get some dough if people buy merch from a link posted on the site.
#33 Posted by MattBodega (1907 posts) -

@JeffGoldblum I'm sure that's exactly what it means.

#34 Posted by JJWeatherman (14562 posts) -

I think it's fine like it is. Maybe it could be adjusted but for now it's fine. I'm glad it's a Tekken ad too because if Giant Bomb started advertising crappy games, that would be a problem.

#35 Posted by Dolphin_Butter (1915 posts) -

From Google Adsense:

"CPM stands for "cost per 1000 impressions." Advertisers running CPM ads set their desired price per 1000 ads served and pay each time their ad appears.

For publishers, this means you'll earn revenue each time a CPM ad is served to your page. CPM ads compete against pay-per-click (or CPC, cost per click) ads in our ad auction, and we'll display whichever ad is expected to earn more revenue for you."

So, I guess this means you should just turn off Ad-Block Plus and refresh the front page?

#36 Posted by Rhaknar (5939 posts) -

i was surprised when I saw the ad mainly because I fist saw it on penny arcade, and and thought "ah so thats what that kotaku story was about", and then i came on giant bomb and saw it there too. Im glad for both giant bomb and for penny arcade :P

#37 Posted by baba2 (275 posts) -

It doesn't change how I use the site, the colours don't distract me from reading anything. So it's all good if the gang are making money from it.

NAO CLICK!

i wonder if that is 1000 clicks on the ad, or 1000 times the page where the ad is is loaded?
#39 Posted by FLStyle (4838 posts) -

If Play.com was included I would've directly pre-ordered it right now from the ad. Like it and its placement, it's all good.

It's page loads and not clicks. CPC ads are for clicks.

That's pretty much one of our major goals with advertising. Obviously, it's an imperfect science, because we're not reviewing games before the ad runs or anything like that. The basic barometer that we've been using is that if we're interested in an upcoming game, chances are at least some of you will be, too. As always, we're reading your feedback pretty closely.

Just as with the previous ads, there's a frequency limitation on them, so you'll only see the ad a few times a day.

I think it goes without saying that we'd rather you didn't use an ad blocker while using the site. We're trying to be respectful of your time and definitely don't want to sacrifice the site experience on our way to pay the bills. That said, I wouldn't feel right directly telling anyone what to do on this front, so I certainly won't hold it against you if you decide to keep blockin'.

@Jeff: Any chance that we'll see non-video game related ads on the site as well? Or is the plan to only have video game related ads on GiantBomb?
#45 Posted by Subject2Change (2966 posts) -

I think its in the perfect area. Really ads don't bother me as long as they aren't over bearing to the site and as long as they don't change the feel of the site or the review process of said game.

Exactly. Its 1 banner. Not the entire scheme of the fucking homepage trying to implant it into your brain. BUY ME BUY ME BUY ME OR I'LL MURDER YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY!

Most game companies sell ads in a region-specific manner, so it's unlikely (though I agree, it's sort of silly) that you'll see US and UK retailers popping up in the same ad.

Kent, our newly added ad sales commando, is focused on the home front right now, but I'm hoping that we'll eventually be able to have ads that are meaningful to our vast international audience, too.

(And yes, I realize how weird the concept of ads "serving" an audience sounds, but that goes back to how we're approaching this stuff. If we're careful, we should be able to find ads that are at least inoffensive, and at most, actually sort of useful.)

There's definitely a chance of that, yes, but probably not in the immediate future.
