Chris Roberts is working on a new game. You can join the project here:

http://robertsspaceindustries.com

Type 42 when given the opportunity. That'll give you access to an announcement, you'll be able to sign up to the proper site and forums which gives you a Gold Ticket for the GDC Live Online show. When the game comes out you'll be provided with a special equipment package, only available for people who signs up at this early stage.

"With the power of today's computers and the reach of the internet I finally feel I have the tools to build the connected experience that I always dreamed of. A world that would be more satisfying and richer than any film I could work on," he added.

"I'm here to tell you that I have been working on something for just under a year, something that embraces everything that my past games stood for but takes it to the next level."

"With films you tell stories but with games you create worlds," Roberts stated. "If you would indulge me I would like to create a world for you."

❤ :)

Woo!

#11 Posted by selbie (1879 posts) -

I just hope it doesn't fall down to the usual design compromises I've seen so many times with space games recently. Chris especially would know about that >__>

I guess this means his screen-writing didn't go so well? Boom!

After hearing about the death of Sony Liverpool and with it pretty much any chance of a new Colony Wars game (I know it was pretty much dead before that anyway but still) This is most welcome news, I loved the control scheme in Freelancer, shame the only other game that I can think of that used it was Darkstar one, I hope whatever game it turns out to be uses similar controls.

Where is the Kickstarter? Every new game coming out has a Kickstarter doesn't it?

#19 Posted by Funkydupe (3311 posts) -

@Flacracker: Gosh darn it all to.. now you've done it. I can sense one coming on the day of the official announcement of this thing..

Hold on to your money. Don't Move. Don't even breathe. A Kickstarter is coming.

I'm really excited for this, I practically grew up with Wing Commander -- especially 3 and 4! I will moreso remember Mark Hamill as Colonel Blair than Luke Skywalker!

#21 Posted by Kyu (11 posts) -

Sounds like a space MMO to me.

Wait a minute...

@Jams: Boner!

Space, I most certainly WILL be in you some time in the (hopefully near) future.

I hate promotions like this but mm, I'm tempted to make an exception

Update from him on that website:

Hello everyone!
I hadn’t planned on writing another message so soon after launching this “underground” site, but because of the amazing outpouring of excitement and support I felt I couldn’t wait.
Thank you.
I am both humbled and excited to see so many people sign up with just the buzz from the various fan sites that spread virally.
As I write this the count of fellow space gamers stands at 6,897!
Pretty impressive when you consider this started from a few Freelancer fans discussing the fact that they wanted a sequel on Reddit and started wondering what I was up to. A few online searches later and some good sleuthing they stumbled across this site, when we had just happened to drop the wall to test some of the registration code. Seven fans signed up before we realized that the outside world was arriving before we were ready!
The Magnificent Seven.
From that ripple came the tidal wave.
One of the reasons why I took this route as opposed to the more traditional one is that I have been constantly amazed by the enthusiasm and talent shown by all of you for my previous work. You have skinned other games to be in the Wing Commander universe, built detailed 3D models of what were much simpler ones back in the day, modded Freelancer to be able to do things we never considered, and extended its life much longer than anyone dreamed.
A key goal on my new game is to involve you all in the process early to help shape the world alongside myself. So please continue to participate in our Citizens Forums, Comm-Link and Polls!
In the meantime I need to get back to coding so you’ll have something cool to see next month
Yours humbly,
Chris Roberts

@Funkydupe: I signed up on this forum just to say "YAY!"....and to think--we are online at the same time. ;)

I played the first release of the Freelancer demo and was stunned when the game came out (pretty much with no real marketing) and then was just quietly allowed to lapse. What was more astounding is no one returned to the concept with the better technology developed after Freelancer's release and tried to bring it into "the future". Wing Commander:Armada was my first, addictive scfi shooter game and freelancer was (and is) just flat-out unique.

Looking forward to seeing a solitaire and multiplayer immesive, believable, scfi world with the atmosphere and substance of your previous works.

Here we are over two decades later still waiting for these games.

Eve Online has done a commendable job of developing the technology and slowly--painfully, slowly--worked towards pulling it all together but has never achieved the charm and fun and intuitive ease and story of a work like Freelancer.

So please, misbehave and do it right. I am evangelizing and spreading the word for you at places like sinsofasolarempire.com and at the Traveller-Imperium group on Yahoo. Great to see you back at it Chris.

This just made me yell SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO!! in my room.

Thank you Chris Roberts for single-handedly reviving the space combat genre.

#32 Posted by OldGuy (1545 posts) -

Dude!

...bet it's not a space "sim" really... ...no one really wants to deal with momentum and all that zero-g really entails... ...but as long as it's fun (hope hope hopehopehope) I'm there!

#33 Posted by emem (1965 posts) -

I love the way it looks, but I hate the fact that it's years away... the game would be perfect right now.

#34 Posted by Naberius_Shrike (43 posts) -

Why is nobody talking about this? All I'm seeing on Twitter is more RE6 bashing and whining about the Polygon documentary. This is one of the coolest announcements to come out of the industry and I haven't seen ANYTHING.

#35 Posted by masterpaperlink (1836 posts) -

AHHHHHHHHH, quite possibly the most excited ive been for a game since i was 12, I feel like the universe has given me exactly what i wanted.

It's a shame the return of Chris Roberts is not worthy a news on Giant Bomb. Very disappointed in you, guys.
