Higher and deffer.
Microsoft has confirmed the existence of the Zune HD, a new version of its multimedia audio/video playback... thing. The new HD model will feature an OLED display, an HDMI out for viewing media on your TV, and support for HD Radio.

But the real news, at least as it pertains to the gaming world is that the Zune Marketplace for video is going to make its way to the Xbox 360 dashboard, essentially replacing the current Xbox Live video Marketplace in North America and parts of Europe. How will it be different than the existing service? It'll probably have a fat Zune logo on it. After all, the press release does specify that "Zune will occupy the first slot within the Xbox user interface in the Xbox LIVE Video Marketplace, exposing the Zune brand experience to millions of new consumers for the first time." As if the dashboard the 360 has now isn't already way, way over-branded.

For any other differences, we'll probably have to wait and see what Microsoft has to say about this newfound device synergy next Monday at its pre-E3 press conference.

#4 Posted by TripMasterMunky (2403 posts) -

Sounds kinda cool I guess.

Well, I was really hoping it had an HDMI port on it, ha, that was too much to ask, though. Guess I'll have to carry around a stupid dock.

Anybody holding their breath for some hot J Allard action. He is in charge of the Zune development, after all.

#7 Posted by borgmaster (513 posts) -

dude......did they hack an Ipod touch or is that the new zune?
but seriously, sounds cool, if the name recognition for this was better it would be going up against the Istuff rather well.....and by better name recognition i mean if it didn't get you laughed at.

Looks amazing. Can't wait to upgrade from my Zune 80.

#9 Posted by OwnlyUzinWonHan (1481 posts) -

If you can play XBLA games on it AND plug in your 360 controller to do so, consider this bought.

#10 Edited by IncredibleBulk92 (936 posts) -

See that looks pretty cool and the 360 integration alone might convince me to buy one but I bet it's still US only.  I bet they'll continue to dedicate 50% of their press conference to stuff that 50% of their customer base will never be able to use.  The Zune looks a lot cooler than the iTouch imo, I'll take pointy shinny stuff over white curves anyday.

EDIT: also, they should take the word social out of everything related to Zune.  It sounds like such a forced marketing word at this point.  "Welcome to the Social" makes me die a little inside everytime I hear it.

Wow, I'm loving the new design. But what it can do is what really matters. Can't wait to hear more about it.

We already have a thread about this Jeff  ;)

I just want to know how much this bad boy will cost

#14 Posted by lordofultima (6255 posts) -

Looks sick, but if it's less than 60 gigs then I'm of course not interested. I don't see why with each hardware modification they have to lower storage capacity. I'll stick with the ipod classic if that's the case.

Always been a fan of the Zune. Not really a fan of the trivial game support they've been trying to push (which will never be what the iPhone Apps store will be, though maybe that's a good thing), but I love the thing for being, in my opinion, the best dedicated portable media device out there. I actually think this move fits pretty naturally into Microsoft's bigger picture; helping them push their digital music/video distribution platform, while at the same time improving the 360 by adding more direct access to a whole library of video and music, rather then the small samplings that the Live service has seen thus far.

If you think about it, Zune Pass + Netflix could be a pretty killer combination. Of course, I'm the sort that will buy music outright, anyway, because I like to avoid monthly fees., but I could see it being very useful for others.

I do hope that this isn't some major forcus for Microsoft, however. I hope they still have plenty of other major announcements, because while this is kinda nifty, it isn't something game-changing to me.

Oh, but I'll be keeping my Zune 80. Until that thing dies outright, I don't plan on forking over another wad of cash for another DAP.

I don't think you're not far off, you know how they gave the original Zune users that new patch that gave a lot of new functionality to their Zunes, that might happen again.

Sigh, I guess I couldn't expect anything less (more?) of a corporation.

"Only 44,000 logos on the dashboard alone (/vastly exaggerated estimation)? I DEMAND MORE."

I'm buying this.  I hope they annouce some serious games for it during E3.

And if the rumors are true about Zune Pass allowing for full song streaming soon, this will be rad on Xbox with custom soundtrack support.

EDIT: I just had a thought..streaming Podcast support via 360?.... Bombcast on 360.  That would be cool.

I really enjoy my current 30g zune that i own, and since its starting to fail on me, (probably from all the times i dropped it) this will be a great thing to switch over to!

Well, I am not a big fan of the Zune, so I don't have a lot of care about this but it looks sort of slick. I might eventually get one to have another, unnecessary MP3 player.

#22 Posted by pirate_republic (1117 posts) -

I'll stick with my 80gb thanks.

#23 Posted by sneakysnake128 (186 posts) -

I actually would have bought a Zune if I didn't win my iPod Classic 80GB for free. Sadly, I can't even fill up 10GB of it.

#24 Posted by Lowbrow (840 posts) -

I love my Zune, works great with my 360... I just wish it could play flash videos... at this point, only MP4 files can be played through my Xbox.

#25 Posted by MrKlorox (11209 posts) -

Damn. So that handheld gaming device recently pictured isn't what this is? Damn. I was hoping for a PSP killer.

Great now il eventually have to buy one online since for some reason New Zealand doesn't sell these puppies at all.

zunes all ready work with 360's and im sure any important updates for 360 functions will be updated on the older zunes..

Ooo, snazzy, looking forward to more details at E3. Will this sway me from my 160 gig iPod (hint: unless it plays XBLA games, not likely)

#29 Posted by Shadowsquire (362 posts) -

ZUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNE! Man I've been waiting for this for a while. Got a refurb 30gb zune for christmas... probably about 2 or 3 years ago now, and I'm still loving the thing. Can't wait for pricing on this.

...I dunno...

#31 Posted by CharleyTony (924 posts) -

The real news in here is the reunion of the two brands:

Xbox = games
Zune = Audi/video content

There simply was no reason to keep those brands apart.

What will they give us next?
-Zune Pass --> LIPS songs?
-Simple XBLA games --> Zunes games?

J ALLARD IS BACK !!!

ALL HAIL THE CXO !!!!

They look like the iPhones.

#33 Posted by JackiJinx (3091 posts) -

Good for people who buy their music and videos from their 360.

#34 Posted by sfighter21 (798 posts) -

Well, I don't own a 360, but this zune looks better than my current one...dang.

Yeah fuck that.  I just bought an iPod Classic (upgraded from an iRiver ihp140) & it already works with the 360 & my Macbook Pro. However, what would be the point?  I use my 360 for games & sometimes Netflix.  I have a high end stereo system for music, so the 360 can't compete with that.  Lastly, I won't use the Xbox store to buy music anymore than I use the iTunes store to buy music.  Bottomline is the Zune has no value, unless they're planning to make it a portable gaming system, that allows me, for example to take my XBL games on the go, play them at work, & rack up my achievement points On The Go.  If it can't do that, fuck it.

Plus, I have a friend that owned a Zune & it broke after 1 year.  He bought another one cheap on ebay & I'm guessing it won't last either.  I only put up with RROD due to the great games the 360 has on it, otherwise I wouldn't bother. For portable media systems, look elsewhere other than Mr. Softy.  The Zune doesn't hold any value because, as we all know, Mr. Softy sucks at hardware.  Wait 6 months & you'll find Zunes in the bargain bins.  Bill Gates will have to come out of retirement & give each & every American a Zune to get us all back on the Mr. Softy bandwagon.

Depending on what it can do I might be interested. Apple stuff is overrated and MS if they played thier cards right could make a better handhled multimedia device than Apple ever could especially if they did connestivity with PC and Xbox right.

#37 Posted by stinky (1549 posts) -

i don't see the point.

rather they left my xbox UI alone, have it concentrate on being clean without the ads.

Zune FTW. If you never picked up and played with one, you don't know what you're missing.

I has boner for Zune HD. I honestly didn't think the images we got 2 weeks ago were real.
