This is a growing problem in the industry, and to no surprise EA is doing it now with Warhammer Online. Rockstar did this previously on Manhunt 2.

"Over the years, we've had hundreds of people work on the game, and we thank everyone who helped us bring our Warhammer passion to life, but only current employees that have continued until the end will be credited in the final game," Mythic VP and general manager Mark Jacobs told Shacknews.

That's really the backwards way to do things. In my experience with MMOs, the people who worked on the game up to the point of the manual being printed were credited; anyone hired for after the initial game went to press had to wait for a re-issue to have their names in the credits.

If someone works for a while and leaves the project, why should they get credits? That doesn't make any sense. Credit is given to those who stayed and debugged, coded, upgraded, polished etc. up until the end.

Because the work they did would still be present in the game?

For example, a lot of the people who worked on the initial release of WoW are gone due to an exodus that happened prior to Burning Crusade where a lot of devs went to NCSoft, Red 5, and another upstart; yet they are still given credit as the work they did didn't just vanish into thin air when they left the company.

That seems like trivial pandering to me.

"

At present, the IGDA suggests its members credit "any person...who has contributed to the production of the game for at least 30 days of a 12-month or greater project...[or] any person who has contributed during 10% of the project's total time in development [for projects shorter than 12 months]."

"

That seems reasonable; but crediting every single person who clicked a button and painted a tiny pixel would be stupid.

Then you have to look at the perspective the article is written from, and its source. An outsider who "heard from people inside". Who knows what he may have twisted or been fed falsely? They could have a more generous crediting policy than that.

There are too many uknowns to make a judgement.
