I realize it's not a huge thing, but now it's going to bother me every time I see that specific phrase used. I wish I wasn't such an insufferable pedant D:

I generally ignore it, however it's pretty funny when you hear people say that and you try to correct them but they think they're saying it right.

Most people just say downloadable content anyways.

Better than DLC non-content, which is all too common these days.

Yeah, and I suppose you could make a stretch of an argument to justify "DLC content" as valid if you take "downloadable content" as one discrete package, and the second "content" as a descriptor for the actual assets within that package.

That's just some shit you made up. I've never heard that.

Oh, I got it. Woops. Now I feel like an idiot.

What about DLcontent.

#8 Posted by jozzy (2042 posts) -

I like the term on-disk DLC, you see it quite often :)

#9 Posted by ajamafalous (12007 posts) -

I have literally never heard anyone mistakenly say "DLC content" before this thread.

Extra shit that costs way too much and prolongs the game you like by 2 hours. Works for me.

DC Comics is worse.

#15 Posted by Ravenlight (8040 posts) -

What does the L stand for in DLC?

Downloadable is only one word.

#16 Posted by Agikamike (55 posts) -

I'm sick of "digital downloads."

How are those analog downloads treating you?

I'd better get some money from the ATM machine so I can buy a PSN Network card, and buy some DLC content.

GIVE THIS MAN A MEDAL!

#19 Posted by Sbaitso (540 posts) -

@Agikamike: There doesn't need to be an analog counterpart for something to be called digital. I get what you are saying, but I don't think I really see the problem. Sure, we could just say downloads, but whatever.

#20 Posted by Agikamike (55 posts) -

@Sbaitso: It's just like saying interactive video games. By definition, if there's a download, it's digital. Redundancy is not re-fun-dancy.

These are all redundancies I have never realized before, now it's going to bug me too. Thanks a lot.

#22 Posted by phrosen (147 posts) -

@Brodehouse: That's the name of the publisher though. It's also more descriptive than just "DC". That could be all sorts of things. For my money it sounds nicer too.

#23 Posted by Rattle618 (1463 posts) -

This box contains DLC content.

There, a gift for you.

#24 Edited by Zaccheus (1795 posts) -

Just looked this up and it has a pretty interesting Wikipedia page which offer these two examples that have yet to be mentioned: LCD display and PIN number. Oh god! It's everywhere!

Edit: ISBN number, HIV virus, UPC code, DVD disc, MIDI interface, RAM memory, RPG game, LAN network... My brain hurts.

#25 Posted by Slag (4455 posts) -

Given the dubious quality/value of most DLC, I find such a term as "DLC content" to be pretty apt descriptor.

Make sure at the ATM Machine your PIN Number is correct.

The antenna I have on my roof works okay, but sometimes during storms I only get about 20KB/s. My wife uses a bunny-ear antenna. Sometimes she gets 75KB/s when she moves the aluminum foil in just the right spot.

I always thought that was a network interface controller. Wikipedia seems to agree with me and as we all know it's never wrong.

They also say known as Network Interface Card. I always refer to the card itself when working with it physically. Other than that I just say NIC. All just depends on the context I suppose.

I don't know if it's the case with DC, but I'm pretty sure it's not uncommon for companies to make their initials into the actual name (like how 3M doesn't really stand for Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing any more). If that's the case, then DC would no longer really stand for "Detective Comics," it would just stand for "DC." So DC Comics could work if that's what happened.
