white background looks great
OLD VS NEW : do you like the new layout
I don't like the options you've provided. It's not horribly offensive, but I have some issues with the design that will never be fixed because that's the way they wanted to do it.
I agree with the logo seeming out of place now, and I'm not crazy about the caps lock on everything (including video headers), but overall it's a nice look.
So far I love the layout. Takes some getting used to, but bigger buttons are nicer for my widescreen monitor. Looks more fitting.
The popup menus are worlds better. With the smaller old ones my mouse would accidentally clip the corner and close the box, super annoying. I love the functionality, but i'm not a fan of the new look. Like others of said the logo doesn't flow with the bar as well. I also don't like how the user control panel is stretched out at the top.
I'm not completely sold on it yet. There are some things I like about it, but for the most part I prefer the old style. Most of my problems with it have been covered by others, but here's a quick rundown:
- Floating logo and profile stuff (they're just floating there and not really incorporated at all)
- The profile info has no background so it blends into some people's custom user page background
- Caps lock everywhere (It's a bit over used, especially on the video header on the videos page)
- The bar is a little too wide giving me a horizontal scroll bar, it's also a little too thick for me
- There's a little too much white space in the navigation drop-downs as well as under the bar itself
- I preferred the click-to-drop-down menus on the profile stuff
- I had to update my browser to view it correctly (this might not seem like a big problem, but I lost a few of my favorite add-ons)
Some of my problems:
- White space in the header. Way more than there used to be.
- ALL CAPS IN MANY PLACES. STOP SHOUTING AT ME.
- The header no longer has its own background, making it difficult to see things when custom profile backgrounds are used.
- The PM box used to stay up until explicitly removed. If my Internet connection is slow I might go do something else. Now when I return I have to reopen it, suffering long wait times all over again. Opening my inbox as a separate page would take even longer loading than the AJAX inbox, so it's lose-lose for me.
And yes, the Internet connection issue is a very real problem for me. I think I'm now being throttled at school when I use Giant Bomb (perhaps they don't like me making API requests all day), so the less redundant loading the better.
I think it's great. The logo needs to be changed, though. The shadowing for is some weird shade of grey and it looks super fucked up when on a dark colored page, like the Bombcast page or a user page. Also not a fan of the placement of the user icon/user name. It'd look nice if the icon was on the far right and the username next to it on the left. Looks weird floating in the middle of nowhere like that.
The one problem that I have so far, is when you go to some other users pages, and they have a custom background some of the backgrounds can make the user bar at the very top of the page nearly unreadable.
" It's a fucking piece of shit design. I want it to have the crew across the top doing machismo poses while shirtless and shit. Look at this baller shit on majornelson.com.Only with the backing of one of the worlds biggest corporations can one ever hope to have the budget required to produce something along the lines of majornelson.com. It is a fucking Magnum Opus of web design.
"
Its ok, but i don't come to GB to watch the layout, if i can get to the bombcast/quicklooks/forums its cool
" @HandsomeDevil said:This." Absolute trash. "This.
It's bulky, there's too much empty space surrounding the red bar, the red bar no longer extends under the logo making the logo look out of place, and for fuck's sake, the popup menus load instantly so any time my mouse goes ANYWHERE NEAR THEM I get ridiculous popups. "
It just looks blocky and ugly. Searchbar should be on the right too. Logo just looks bad and out of place not.
When I first saw it I thought everyone would hate it. I'm genuinely shocked that a majority of people like it.
