Post your favourite story-driven titles of the decade here. If enough people respond, I'll try to make it a poll of some sort.
Keep in mind that the question is purely about plot, so characters shouldn't be considered while picking the title.
My personal favorite is Persona 4.
EDIT:Seems like I totally forgot about PHOENIX FUCKING WRIGHT
These games have such an awesome story...
Plot of the decade
Um... sort of weird to bring in an Indy game into this but Braid... especially when you make the link to the nuclear bomb. Bioshock probably deserves an honorable mention... Kotor would probably get best twist? Warcraft 3 best plot unraveling?
Mass Effect DOES NOT deserve to be mentioned... i mean someone explain to me what the mass effect 2 plot is. Shephard dies, Illusive man brings him to life to stop the reapers, humans disappear, it turns out they were disappearing because they were needed to build a reaper. Also 99 per cent of the game was just picking up up characters, and then going on to do their individual story missions. Those are good, but i would not have them in "plot" as they are side missions.
None? Maybe the Silent Hill games? I'm too tired to be answering this right now, might return with a more thought out response tomorrow.
On Topic: Mass Effect's story was fucking amazing. It started off as a revenge tale, but damn did it take a fucking turn.
I really enjoy the universe created for Mass Effect, but I have to say nothing is intriguing me more right now than the storyline in the Assassin's Creed series. It's going in directions I never would have expected.
Probably an unpopular choice, but I really enjoyed the Halo story for the series (though I didn't play all of Halo 2). Also really liked Uncharted 2, which I just finished today, though that may be on the strength of it's characters more than the actual plot. Metal Gear Solid is a good choice. I loved me the story of Eternal Darkness. Lovecraftian-esque horror stuff really tickles my fancy. Mass Effect 1 was grand, Modern Warfare was thrilling, Red Dead Redemption made lots of emotions kick up, and despite how angsty and bizarre it was, TWEWY's plot was really touching. Really, there's too many choice for me to choose one as my favourite.
I'm serious, that game's story is so well-crafted and presents interesting theories that really allow the player to think.
The characters are all pretty grand as well.
Please buy this game so it gets the support it so rightly deserves. I'd love a sequel.
My runner-up choice would have to be Assassin's Creed. That series' universe is also quite awesome.
I love Mass Effect, the Shepard story is great, and the universe that bioware establishes is absolutely amazing and detailed.
oh god. So many defining games :X I mean your talking ps2 and xbox 360 era. damn.
Though I will say ps2 felt like it has more truly story driven games than 360. 360 to me while I love it alot feels
more like a micheal bay like machine (constant explosions, not much depth) while ps2 was more like Akira Kurosawa with some
Quentin Tarantino thrown in from some of the over the top games like god hand.
I just cant pick though im indecisive as it is and with so many defining games this decade I couldnt give an honest answer.
" The Half-Life 2 story arc is incredibly interesting to me. No other game has gotten close to catching me like that series. I just want to know so much about the characters and what's going to happen next. "I'm with you. It's a classic sci-fi dystopia story. How can I not love it?
Nice job posting spoilers to Mass Effect 2 without covering it up with a spoiler tag....dickhead." Um... sort of weird to bring in an Indy game into this but Braid... especially when you make the link to the nuclear bomb. Bioshock probably deserves an honorable mention...
