Pong - Review as if it was just released today as a new game

So you hear the complaints anytime a new game gets released. I thought it would be interesting to try and create a short summary review of a classic game with the thought if it was released into today's game market as is. Try to keep it only a few sentences like a review synopsis.

My example review:

Either my video card broke or the developer did not have the budget for any graphics or even color. The multiplayer is there but no online play. The lack of ball customization and paddle choices make me wanting for more. Maybe they will fix it with DLC in the future but I don’t think this game was ready for release. I do respect its simple design qualities and the controls feel snappy. I would wait for this to hit the bargain bins before buying though.

This game is trash.

4/5 stars.

This is a bit of an incongruous thought exercise.

Without Pong, would we even have the same kinds of games we have today? Would we have the same hardware? Maybe if Pong never existed then was released today, it would be lauded as the gaming breakthrough of the century.

6/10. Terrible graphics and gameplay only a little bit more complex than Call of Duty.

Tight controls and a consistent 60 frames per second at 1080p; next gen gaming has arrived. 5/5

Dated graphics, repetitive gameplay, zero story or character development, and lack of online multiplayer was a huge oversight on the developers part. I give it a 1 out of 56.

Worse even than Big Rigs.

Simplistic controls and lack of physics leads to a two player borefest for the two minutes the novelty lasts. Big Rigs is finally outclassed. Get refund!

Yes the framerate is smooth and the gameplay is solid, but the graphics are dated and the developer forgot Online Multiplayer, the real downside however of Pong is the lack of paddle progression. All I want is a red dot sight on my paddle. 2/5 stars

The current state of things would likely be different, but I don't think Pong was the singular breakthrough that had to happen for games to progress. The franchises and designers might be different, but tech would still progress, and likely every genre we have now would also exist. No one said, "Pong is pretty cool, but what if you commanded troops around a battlefield while harvesting resources to build up a base?" The concept of a strategy game existed before Pong, and it would have been made into a computer game eventually regardless. The same thing can be said for shooters (paintball, lasertag), RPGs (D&D, etc.), and pretty much anything else that can be drawn from the analog world.

Certainly breakout wouldn't exist, and by extension we wouldn't have Wizorb or Shatter, but even something like Virtua Tennis would have been made eventually, because Pong did not invent racquet sports. It's true that Pong was a landmark game, especially for getting video games into the home, but that doesn't actually make it a good game.

I think pong is one of the greatest multiplayer games ever.

"If you buy one tennis game this year, make it last year's Virtua Tennis 4. Fans of the genre may enjoy it."
