So, a lot of you guys guessed it right initially; the only playable character left on the list is Sonic the Hedgehog. We still have no info on the game itself, but this should be an indication at the direction they're planning on taking this game. SEGA America Blog
In Project Needlemouse, there will be no new characters – playable or otherwise. The focus will remain solely on one blue hedgehog.

This art reveals an enemy from the game – but at the same time, it also reveals much more about the spirit, and direction, that Project Needlemouse is taking.
I really hope this is not some kind of HD remake, but a new Sonic game. I guess only time will tell, but for now, it seems like they're heading in the right direction.
@FluxWaveZ: I'm certain. Well, I actually didn't mind the demo for Unleashed, but the Werehog part wasn't in the demo so that's probably why I liked the demo.
Hopefully, it will be a hyper-serious first person game and you play as Robotnik.

They have to be joking with half of these characters, they just have to. I mean, FROGGY? I had to suffer through boring fishing levels in Sonic Adventure just to catch the bugger, like I'd care to actually play as the dumb animal (well, maybe it would be better than Big, but seriously?).
Darnit Sega. Just give us a Sonic game where we play as Sonic... and maybe Tails. Focus on good gameplay, not characters no one cares about! No more gimmicks, no more Werehogs, no more stages where Sonic is on top of a plane.
Just give us the blue hedgehog we love running around super fast, jumping on the heads of the minions of the evil Dr. Robotnik (Much Prefer Robotnik to Eggman.) in beautiful environments with great throwback music to the good games in the series.

Mass Effect 2 isn't an option, I've got naught but a PS3. I'm considering buying Mega Man 9, and I guess we'll see what Project Needlemouse holds. GTA IV, I'm not too keen on trying, I fear it'll seem to dated for me to enjoy.

Not to completely change the subject of this forum post, but here's your solution.
If you've never played GTA before, then it won't seem dated, since you won't be used to the gameplay mechanics that the OG game started. Get GTAIV (at least to try it- I know people who just don't like that game, but try it first), along with Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (which should be $20 on Amazon, or anywhere else you look) to experience the good Sonic games, and maybe just buy Mega Man 9 on PSN. Problem solved? Yeah, I would think so.
I called it when the game was announced. It will probably suck. They will not fool me. Sega should stick to publishing. Best thing I have played recently with their names on it was Bayonetta.

This is pretty much what I am thinking. Sega has shown that the only thing they can do with the sonic franchise is run it into the ground. Over and over again.
My personal dream for this game? That all those names actually get eliminated and it turns out to be a Big the Cat game, making it Sega's entry in the intensive fishing sim market and primed to go head to head with any number of Rapala games.

So why exactly did people like sonic, then? Most of the people in this thread are asking for 2 things: 2D gameplay and not including his crap friends. If you didn't like, or appreciate in the slightest, Sonic Rush, Sonic Advance, Sonic CD and what was included in Sonic & Knuckles, I'm afraid you just don't like Sonic and never have.

People liked Sonic when he wasn't being whored out every year in yet another shit sequel. It doesn't even matter if it was the 2D that people missed - the point is that it's an exhausted franchise that actually has a streak of bad entries going. People also don't want a 2D game in this day and age that isn't a PSN / XBLA game - people want 3D, which is a dimension Sonic always seems to fuck up in compared to Mario. So where is the market for this game exactly? A PSN / XBLA arcade game is never going to sell a million ie. it's never going to penetrate a twentieth of the Sonic fanbase that once was. And a 2D game is never going to be accepted in a conventional brick-and-mortar market - it would bomb because it's not modern enough, people wouldn't want it. The only way to revitalise Sonic, give him the same appeal he had all all those years ago, is to make a genuinely excellent, contemporary 3D title like Nintendo did with Super Mario Galaxy. But that will never happen, simply because Sega are no longer smart enough without their legendary game designers at center stage.
