Question about Electronics, Power and Batteries.

Ok so, hard to explain but I will do my best.
 
You have your standard PC, PSU, wall socket power etc etc. Would there be a way of having a external Battery, connected to this PC, that, if the power goes out, a surge or someone pulls the plug, could the external battery keep the PC running without it powering down?
