So this year, I got the idea of instead of watching A Christmas Story for the 20,000th time, I figured I do something different. So I'm purposely avoiding traditional Christmas movies for something a BIT different this year.

So far I got:

  1. Die Hard 1 and 2
  2. Black Christmas
  3. Reindeer Games
  4. Silent Night Deadly Night
  5. Badder Santa

Anyone got any good ones to point out?

Lethal Weapon happens around Christmas.

My mom was watching a Christmas movie on Netflix this morning called "One Magic Christmas". It was one of these "get in the spirit of Christmas, you fucking Scrooge!" movies, but it missed its own point by a mile when it expected its heroine to be happy after, in the span of about fifteen minutes, she got fired from her job, her husband got shot in a bank robbery, her car got stolen with her two kids in it, and then the guy who stole the car drove it off of a cliff into a fucking river. What the fuck? I exclaimed "this is fucking depressing!" and she shrugged it off. Further research into this film reveals that it was supposed to be a loose retelling of It's a Wonderful Life but it made Max Payne look like he was having a good day.

So there's an unintentionally nontraditional Christmas movie. You should also watch National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, where a cat causes an electrical fire by chewing on the power cords to the Christmas tree lights and Chevy Chase goes nuts.

Uhhhh I'll Be Home for Christmas, the greatest Christmas movie of all time.

Joyeux Noel though, I'm not sure if you'd call it non-traditional but it is a pretty good movie on Christmas in World War Two.

Plains,Trains and Automobiles and Groundhog Day are a must watch every year during Thanksgiving and Christmas. They both capture the spirit of the Holidays, but can really be watched all year round.

Batman Returns takes place at Christmas time and shortly after.

A Midnight Clear (1992) is an exceptional World War II movie that takes place during the Battle of the Bulge (mid Dec-late Jan 1945) starring Ethan Hawke and Gary Sinise.

Recently I saw Arthur's Christmas, an animated Christmas tale from late last year. It was surprisingly good. I think it was made by the Wallace and Gromett people but it's CG and not stop-motion puppetry like W&G. The movie gets a bit sappy toward the end, but still a good experience.

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas is another you might want to check out. It's better than H&K 2, which was a little heavy-handed and directionless after the first act.

Oh and no list would be complete without a mention of Jingle All the Way.

What this guy said. H&K2 left a bad taste in my mouth, the Christmas one gave me some faith :)

Last Christmas I watched The Shining. It was a good time. I don't remember if it ever mentions Christmas though. It's got snow. That was good enough for me.

Money Train. I thought this movie was awesome but then again the last time I saw it I was 10 years old, and at that age I thought War Gods was a decent game.

Warning, the following trailer contains 5000% of your daily recommended amount of the 90s. Also something tells me that Jeff would love this movie.

Edward Scissorhands is pretty dang Christmas-y if you're into Tim Burton's old style.

Well I barely made it through the trailer. You and your friend are gods among men.
