Pretty simple question. In an RPG, which are you more likely to play? The dashing, agile rogue? The stalwart, hulking warrior? Or the inquisitive, destructive mage?

Personally, I like a good rogue. Sneak attacks are always oh-so rewarding.

Most of the time I choose the mage, because killing enemies with lighting bolts and fireballs is pretty cool.

See this shit? This is a good poll. I want to see more of them. Rogue has always been my playstyle. Something about the idea of silently taking out a room full of guards with a couple knives, and a garrote and a distraction has always been badass to me.

Warrior. Always. I have tried out mage in some but generally am not a huge fan. I just love playing a warrior and hitting that point were you become almost invincible. By the end of Oblivion on my first playthough my warrior reflected so much damage and had so much health that I could just stand there and let things kill themselves by attacking me. It was awesome.

I like to mix it up. But I almost always find my first playthrough is usually a mage. Even In masseffect I was the Adept which is kind of like a mage...

Mage. I like standing back and throwing fire at shit.

My favorite type of class is the Archer. Since the Rogue class usually favors Archery, that's the one I picked.

#11 Posted by ShadowConqueror (3067 posts) -

Mage! I play games to do things I can't in life, so I'm all about the magic.

#12 Posted by Ketchupp (673 posts) -

I always start a mage just hoping someone actually tried to make them interesting and new.

#13 Posted by VisceralWhimsy (55 posts) -

I like to try them all out at some point; which leads to multiple save files and restarts and general grunting around. Mage normally does it for me, though. Unless I'm playing with a Mage; too much magic a-flying on the field for me.

Rogue Warrior.

#15 Posted by BoG (5192 posts) -

Anything but rogue, really. I am almost never a rogue-type class.

#16 Posted by SoldierG654342 (1793 posts) -

Depends on the game, really. It's either Warrior or Mage, with a slight skew towards Mage. Never Rouge, though.

Mage. Because if I learned anything from the original Diablo, it's that the mage was also the best thing to be in the end game because nothing would get the chance to fuck with you.

@Red: great poll! if the spell lineup is unique i'll do a mage first pretty much every time. unless the spells suck or are just the same old magic missle, fireball, etc etc then no thanks. if the rogue stealth and dmg mechanics are good i'll do a rogue. never a straight-up warrior. I'm not trying to put myself to sleep.

but actually these days if the RPG falls into the same old tank-dmg-heal D&D mechanics I'll usually just take a pass. I played my fill. I'll save my time and money up for a game that actually puts some effort into the combat system and setting design.

Only mage if they have decent looking armor/robes. Warrior if fighting is generally fun. Never a rouge unless it's Oblivion.

Mostly warrior because looking badass is fun.

#24 Posted by MentalDisruption (1651 posts) -

Mage for life. Or cleric, if it's available.

#25 Posted by Animasta (14715 posts) -

Usually rogue if it's that blatant...

#26 Posted by AxleBro (798 posts) -

warrior. hitting things is what i like.

#27 Posted by Demoskinos (15034 posts) -

At first I was really worried this was a topic about Rogue Warrior. Then I re-read the title. Anyways, Rogue ever since Dragon Age Orgins (one of my favorite games of all time) I've learned to love rogues. Backstabbing and doing massive crits with your bow. Its simply delicious!

Although I'm going a pretty pure mage character in skyrim and enjoying that as well. Although also promptly getting fucked on skyrim in many cases against warriors who corner me. O_o

I always try to go mage or thief but I always end up being the smash dudes guy. You can never run out of sword swings, but you sure can run out of magic.

As a side note anything other than chaotic neutral in D&D rule video games does not make any sense to me. It's the only one that let's me do what I want to when I feel like it.

*I don't play a lot of D7D rule RPG games.

I don't get Rogues... they are weaker than warriors, and their abilities are nowhere near as awesome as mages... so... I just don't get why people like them. besides, sneaking in most RPG's ala dragon age really doesn't work well... Just saying my piece. I love warrior and mage. gonna have to think on this one.

#30 Posted by Red (5995 posts) -

@Jay444111: Sneaking sucks in games where you have a party of dudes who can't sneak, but otherwise it's great. Being able to flat-out avoid fights or start them off with a kill is fun.

#31 Posted by Seedofpower (3941 posts) -

I try to follow a simple formula. Hit it with a stick then it falls over and I move on. No need to sneak or hide behind cover.

Battle Mage

#33 Posted by JasonR86 (9746 posts) -

Warrior

I always make myself a tank in every game I play that allows me to do so. Then I just brute force my way through everything.

#34 Posted by President_Barackbar (3467 posts) -

I'm a wizard, and...I think you know the rest.

They are weaker than warriors because their damage potential is way higher than a warrior they are a DPS role in a traditional party style game. And even games without a party like skyrim they are very very powerful the dagger and bow damage bonuses for sneak attacks will deal more damage than any brute force warrior build could ever hope to.

Battle mage in Dragon Age is real fun!

Didn't expect the voting to be so close. Frost Mage since Sub-Zero.

#38 Posted by FluxWaveZ (19372 posts) -

It's all about the magic.

#39 Posted by Blackout62 (1360 posts) -

I can never decide between playing rogue or a mage. Even beyond just the obvious sneaky sneaky stabby kill kill (or I guess not since I always play an archer) or the burn everything choice, I still haven't actually nailed what playstyle I find easier. For now it's both, one save as a rogue and one as a mage in Skyrim, Torchlight, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc, never warrior though.

#40 Posted by Encephalon (1292 posts) -

Rogue. Mage on second playthrough, if there is one. Fuck warrior.

Where's all the other classes? I often like to roll with the Paladin-esque class, because they're tanks who can also heal themselves. Win win. For the sake of the poll, though, i'll vote warrior.

#43 Posted by juanvaldes (186 posts) -

Mage > Rogue > Warrior

Usually.

#44 Posted by HaltIamReptar (2029 posts) -

Mage. Battlemage if viable.

#45 Posted by Hizang (8532 posts) -

I end up going with the weak but agile character.

Rogue Warrior (starring Mickey Rourke)

#48 Posted by Scrawnto (2460 posts) -

Definitely rogue. I'm surprised by how evenly split the responses are. For some reason I thought more people played warrior.

#49 Posted by mortal_sb (547 posts) -

mostly warrior. then mage (loved the mage stuff in dark messiah). rogue: almost never.

#50 Posted by ajamafalous (12055 posts) -

Interesting to see the almost even split on this.
