I opened up my issue of Rolling Stone the other day and saw a Video artictle a thought "Video Games in Rolling Stone? WTF!?" Heres there list I say Rolling Stone need to stay out of the Video game world, but let this help you with you desicion. This was in the November 12 issue and I got like November 1st so all these games were unrealesed.
1. DJ Hero
2. Modern Warfare 2
3. Br utal Legend
4. Left 4 Dead 2
5. Guitar Hero Van Halen
6. NBA 2K10
7. Assassins Creed II
8. Avatar(?)
9. Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony
10. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Rolling Stone's 10 most imporant games?
The fact that 3 of these titles are music related, and all in the top 5, should tell you something.
I don't read Rolling Stone, but I wouldn't be surprised if DJ Hero, Brutal Legend, and GH:VH were all heavily advertised in it throughout this past year. Seems like the Gamepot/Eidos thing again.
I can't help but think that list looks like something put together by someone who looked at a release list and selected what looked like the best games, or the ones that the readership of the Stone would be interested in. "Wow, look at all these music games. Those must be hot. Oh, and Jack Black is in this one. That must be good." The inclusion of Guitar Hero Van Halen is especially baffling, given that GH5 and Band Hero are much better values as far as amount of content, and by all accounts GH: Van Halen is kinda shit.
Well considering it's a music magazine I don't think it's surprising DJ Hero, Brutal Legend and GH Van Halen are there. But still...wtf...
GH: Van Halen is on the list instead of The Beatles: RB? Yes they are entitled to their opinions but anyone who is able to think will tell you that the better game and the more "important" game is The Beatles: RB.
Anyways I hate these lists Rolling Stones makes. People start to act like the lists are facts and not opinions.
" @Belonpopo said:el oh el, opinions right?" @Karmum: The artical is "10 Best Games right now" "Oh, DJ Hero at the top? NBA 2K10 and Guitar Hero: Van Halen on that list? Their certainly titled to their opinion, but it sucks when their opinion is more widespread than our opinions. Ugh. "
I'm really not surprised a music magazine has a lot of music games on it's "best-off" list.
" @Karmum said:Touche. And indeed to that, but I suppose popularity always reigns supreme." @Belonpopo said:el oh el, opinions right? Rolling Stone has been pretty weak-sauce for the past few years. It seems they can't get one voice and stick with it. They tend to praise certain bands/performers, and once that band makes it, they proceed to shit all over them. They are trying to cater to disposable pop-culture. Instead of employing writers whose opinions might sway their reader base, they seem to employ writers who are willing to change their opinions to match what their perceived readers might think. It's not informative editorial work, it's reactive editorial work and it all just smacks of bullshit.
if anyone really wants good coverage, there are a million editorial websites for all things pop-culture. Most people tend to find a website that is close to their own voice/opinion for music, film, books and video games and tend to stick with that until their tastes, or the editorial staff changes.
Yeah, if DJ Hero at the top didn't nullify this list for me, having GH:VH anywhere on that list pretty much sealed the deal for me. Even though it was free I still feel a little ripped off after playing it." Guitar Hero Van Halen? They were fucking giving that POS out for free with GH5. "
How the crap is The Beatles: Rock Band not on that list? As far as music games go, it was arguably the biggest release of the year.
Those guys are morons. It doesn't matter anyway. Rolling Stone lost its credibility when I was still in high school, so by today's standards they're little more than birdcage lining. If those are the most important games of '09 then they're playing the wrong games. Yeah, I see the musical angle, but wouldn't it make more sense to include Beatles: Rock Band or even Guitar Hero 5 instead of a throw away like Guitar Hero: Van Halen?
Avatar the Game? Okay, maybe the film will be cool, but the track record for movie-to-game licenses has never been good. I think it's way to early to anoint that game as "important" at this point. If they had an iota of knowledge they would have gone with Batman: Arkham Asylum as their choice for best game made from a licensed property. It also happens to be one of the best games of the year. Period.
And finally, no Uncharted 2: Among Thieves? That's just wrong.
I disagree with GH:VH, and haven't played Avatar yet...but other than that, those are the top 10 games going on right now in some capacity, so the list isn't horribly inaccurate or anything.
HOWEVER...this debate of "DJ Hero about Modern Warfare 2?"...look, MW2 is great, but I don't get frustrated playing DJ Hero (at least, the demo at Best Buy). So while I'll get more gameplay time right now out of Modern Warfare 2, I'll let the euphoria of playing DJ Hero wow me over at the moment.
