So in the same vein as the VGCW, a new thing called Salty's Dream Cast Casino has become a thing.

SaltyBet is a website where people can use fake money in order to bid on who they think will be the winning players in major, streamed fighting game tournament matches. It tracks participants' rankings via how much they bet and payouts and such. It was featured a lot during EVO.

What Salty's Dream Cast Casino is: when no big fighting game tournaments are streamed, a 24/7 stream of M.U.G.E.N. (freeware crazy fighting game engine) where 1v1 matches of different A.I. controlled characters will take place where people can place bets on who they think will win. It's pretty hilarious/ridiculous and I thought I'd share.

This stuff is amazing. The 'metagame' of trying to find consistency in what characters will win is hilarious, especially since there are so many completely unbalanced characters that you can't possibly measure them all against eachother. Some random loli girl beating wolverine doesn't mean shit in the grand scheme of things since you don't know if the girl was just good or if wolverine was simply awful.

My current rule that's sorta working: bet on the shittiest looking sprite. If a character looks like actual effort went into it, the creator probably considered making him/her balanced at some point. On the other hand, sloppy pallete swaps or mspaint figures with 5 frames of animation tend to be either completely harmless or complete monsters, which makes betting on them worth the risk.

What a beautifully dumb way to run that site when nothing serious is going on. I finally signed up for it because of this thread and now I'm weirdly invested in these mostly dumb and not at all balanced AI matches. The fact that you're also not really punished for bottoming out and can effectively spam your $10 minimum balance in the hopes of cashing in big also probably doesn't hurt, though. I also feel like it's taught me a few life lessons like:

  • Don't bet on DBZ characters.
  • Except sometimes you still should.
  • No two Kens are alike.
  • All of the screen real estate in the world won't mean the giant characters will win if they don't have AI that actually tells them to hit stuff.
  • The MUGEN community has still hilariously not worked out consistent proportion standards for character sprites after all these years.

The "never bet on DBZ" character rule seriously messed me over. I was at $1,100+ and lost $900 on two big bets against Piccolo and Gohan. Now I'm at $73.

Gotta climb my way back up... Now I just don't bet when a DBZ character is involved. Seriously screws me over.

Man, I have the same feeling as Jeff, MUGEN seems like an awesome idea, but so much work.

Oh man this Grover made me lose it.

#12 Posted by Zeik (2195 posts) -

The random assortment of video game music that plays over it I think has kept me watching this more than anything. I was barely even paying attention to the matches once they started playing MegaTen music.

#13 Posted by FluxWaveZ (19306 posts) -

Almost lost all of my cash when Grover was losing. Such a close match.

1,000+ viewers now.

Fuck The International. This shit is HYPE!

This is what caused me to sign up for Saltybets, man this is riveting.

Move over EVO,

#17 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11423 posts) -

this is just as dumb as VGCW and just as amazing.

#18 Posted by Gruebacca (487 posts) -

This is actually some good ass entertainment. Mega Vegeta didn't inflict a single scratch against Crystal across three rounds. Totally expected that, and yet it was awesome.

I knew putting down $400 on someone named lipsyncher was a bad idea.

I was in the mines and made about $500 from Gotenks. This should be the biggest esports in the world.

This is the greatest dumb thing I have seen in a long time, and I need to reevaluate my life because I have been watching it for hours.

It's surprisingly addictive. Other highlight from a match earlier (normal speed):

This thing is Amazing, i'll just leave it on in the background and go about my boring Saturday.

#30 Posted by Dizzmotron (36 posts) -

@fluxwavez: I lost money on that one, I knew the Soujiro character was so fast and just assumed that would get him the win. Never bet against grapplers it seems.

Been watching this most of the day, so far my favorite thing has been the chat EXPLODING into karaoke when Snake Eater started playing.

Also 'Bison' might be one of my favorite jokes.

Yeah, wasn't too sure about the 2v2 exhibitions, but the Ghetto Warmachine vs. AltAmiba team battle was a sight to behold.
