Seems my vocab is too easily influenced (picking up GB slang)

I know the GB guys are not responsible for this, but I have heard an inordinate number of people frequently start out sentences with the phrase "I feel like...." in the past year or so. Most of the Bombers say that quite a bit (to the point that I am actually finding it rather annoying). I assume there must be some common place in pop culture from which the GB crew and people who I know have never even heard of Giant Bomb have picked up this habit. Anyone have any insight?

For me it's dope, hell-of, straight up, ___-ass ___, flatly delivered what, chemtrails references, increased usages of dumb, and most of all janky. Yeah, it's kind of terrifying to think I've been consistently absorbing how Ryan and Jeff have talked for coming on 8 years now. Shit has an effect. I find myself taking most from Jeff I feel, especially his inflections. But Ryan's delivery of "what" is the one that sticks.

You know what, janky might just be my favorite word period. In terms of the significance it has personally and in usage, yeah let's go with that.

#53 Posted by Dylabaloo (1495 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

I once said janky when describing a game, people laughed, that's when I knew something had to be done. Although "(thing)-ass (thing)" is too fun not to use!

#54 Posted by Catarrhal (778 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

Jeff has gone on record as saying "[The Giant Bomb staff] did not invent the word 'janky.'"

If they ever did want to take credit for inventing the term, though, I'm sure no one would question it at this point.

I purchased a box of off-brand fruity pebbles and my mother called them "janky as hell."

That's pretty hilarious.

I talked like a broham before Giantbomb. This is nothing new to me, I have been and always will be a complete dumbass.

The Urbandictionary is my toilet reading material. I don't need no shampoo bottle.

I think a lot of things they say on bombcast i usually say, maybe cause i have lived in the bay area for the past 7 years.

The one thing i did pick up from bombcast was from Vinny, he always says "Jeez Louise" and i have ended up saying that a lot. I blame Vinny for that.

#57 Posted by efman (203 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

I listen to alot of podcasts, but I recall having heard such words as "clutch," one I'm surprised no one made mention of, "fools," and "messed up" around GB as of late.

You forgot Ryan constantly saying "brutally rebuffed" when talking about being rejected or failing at something. Also you forgot "Ro-but" when saying "Robot"

#60 Posted by ApolloBob (566 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

I also like that a positive endorsement of a game by Jeff amounts to "That game's allright".

I've started saying Duder a lot. I blame Giant Bomb.

same here, although i thank Giant Bomb

I now call people duder on most occasions.

I've been frequenting Giant Bomb for over a year, and during this time I've noticed more and more of my vocabulary has been swayed by Giant Bomb. Some examples of things that I've either said or been tempted to say that I would not have without visiting GB:

  • Calling something good "dope" or "sick"
  • Calling something that strongly epitomizes whatever it happens to be a "(thing)-ass (thing)"
  • Calling something terrible "hot garbage"
  • Calling things broken, malfunctioning, or otherwise unusual "janky"
  • Calling a song (or anything, really) that I like "my jam"

Other words/phrases that I haven't personally started using, but others may have

  • "Actively on fire"
  • "Straight-up" as an adverb

I do all of these and never even thought about where they came from. I feel like by having English as my second language I am too easily influenced into picking up dumb phrases like this (even though they're awesome).

Also I totally call hotdogs durgers on a regular basis.

#64 Posted by NinjaBerd (187 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

In the time I've been a GB duder I've really only picked up.

Durgers

Duders

Cray-Cray

"It Physics'd"

#65 Posted by C0V3RT (1156 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

It happens. I've started using "duder" and it's crept into my friends and co-workers vocabulary as well.

#66 Posted by BaneFireLord (2280 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

I called people "scrabbletools" for a while.

@Hansolol said:

Probably the most pervasive one that's used by everyone except maybe Drew and Dave is saying 'what' with no upward inflection to show disbelief.

That's something I associate with Vinny.

#68 Posted by PillClinton (2904 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

Yup, you're straight-up spot-ass on, duder. That's a bananas grip of dope examples.

...shit

#69 Posted by Iodine (343 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

Janky is just incredibly dope to say

#70 Posted by Purple_eye (50 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

Whenever I've finished looking at something, I suddenly tilt my head to look at the ceiling.

#71 Posted by JonathanAshleyMoore (276 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

Giantbomb and any Dan Schneider joint has ruined everything I say.

#72 Posted by CptMorganCA (173 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

This has made me realize.......I use almost every one of these on a regular basis. Especially saying "blank-ass blank" to describe something.

This is is even weirder though. I've watched enough Tested over the years to pick up on Will's constant movement of his forearms when he's explaining something, and I can't fucking stop.

Please help me.

#73 Posted by Labman (270 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

TADOW!!

#74 Posted by believer258 (7874 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

I've seen most of those outside of Giantbomb, though...

...at least I think I have.

Anyway, no, I don't generally use any of them.

#75 Posted by Sparklykiss (1833 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

Jank, janky, hella, bummer, bananas... Those words/terms aren't knew for me.

But duder, -blank-ass-blank-, and saying "zambies" (just to be annoying) are. I feel more bad that I have people calling others "Girl-boo" and using turdburger as a term of endearment like I do. Whoops.

"_____-ass _____ " and "hot garbage" are in full rotation for me.

#77 Posted by jillsandwich (668 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

I've started doing all of these things. However, I really need to try to get "hot garbage" in my everyday vernacular.

@BBAlpert said:

  • Calling something good "dope" or "sick"
  • Calling a whole bunch of something a "grip" of it or "hella"
  • Calling something sub-par "middling"
  • Calling something disappointing or very disappointing "kind of a bummer" or "a real bummer"
  • Bringing up chemtrails when someone talks about any kind of conspiracy theory
  • "Zambies"
  • Calling things broken, malfunctioning, or otherwise unusual "janky"
  • The versatility of the word "dumb," specifically in the context of "dumb, but the kind of dumb I can totally get behind"
  • Referring to spinning doughnuts in a car as "spinnin' brodies" or "spinnin' hot/sick burners"
  • Calling a song (or anything, really) that I like "my jam"
  • "Straight-up" as an adverb
#78 Posted by Peanut (860 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

The only thing I've caught myself using is "duder," because the rest is all pretty standard. I do think "actively on fire" is amazing, though.

#79 Posted by Breadfan (6056 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

Dope and janky have found themselves a home in my vocabulary.

#80 Posted by Clonedzero (2141 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

i pick up slang and terms so easily. i hung out with a british foreign exchange student for a semester and for like a year after that i kept using british slang, drove people crazy.

I used all of those in the late nineties and early aughts because of hip-hop. Even Janky.

I listened to a lot of Ostensib Lee's tracks back then. His album "Hot Garbage on my Durger" was a classic.

Fucking man.

Anyway, I used most of the things on this list before GB, mostly in an ironic-but-now-you've-used-them-so-much-that-they-became-legitimate way. I really love using dumb slang in the dumbest and most unnecessary situations.
#82 Posted by crusader8463 (13079 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

I catch myself talking like the guys from time to time and it really weirds me out that I have picked up a lot of their little ways of saying stuff. Then again, when you listen to people for 1-3 hours a day for several years you can't help but pick up some stuff whether you want to or not.

#83 Posted by Unmada (66 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

Blank-ass-blank is probably my favorite linguistic cliche of theirs. It just feels so damn right, coming out of my mouth-hole.

#84 Posted by JeanLuc (3312 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

I've started using the phase "workshop it" cause of GB.

#85 Posted by DEFE (122 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

Man, yeah. This has made me realize how much I've picked up from Giant Bomb without even thinking about it. I was well aware of stuff like "janky" and "skrilla," but now I see that there's so much more.

#86 Posted by theveej (548 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

as far I'm concerned these are the defacto slang terms that people should utilize. To be fair, millions of people were calling shit "dope" or "sick" or were "spinning brodies" way before GB was ever a thing. Also calling something a thing ass thing in reference to something else is just a useful slang.

Also I don't know how someone can legitimately talk about video games without using Janky once when it comes to like 70% of games out there.

#87 Posted by Nightriff (2889 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

I'm afraid of starting to say Ryan-isms.....

#88 Posted by kre8havoc (155 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

I talk about brodies a lot too. And bananas.

#89 Posted by neato (32 posts) - 5 months, 11 days ago

"Going down a dark path."

Gets said at least three times per podcast.

#90 Posted by jackgb (9 posts) - 5 months, 10 days ago

I've definitely picked up Jeff's habit of prefacing things with "Yo".

#91 Posted by Vextroid (1073 posts) - 5 months, 10 days ago

I find myself using the word 'Janky' in my vocabulary.

#92 Posted by HowDire (234 posts) - 5 months, 10 days ago

Duder

Zambies

Robuts

Janky

#93 Edited by Hunter5024 (2704 posts) - 5 months, 10 days ago

I talk like a combination between a hipster college student, a 90s urban middle schooler, and a grumpy old man. I'm not even sure which parts of my vocabulary are ironic anymore, but I'm pretty sure I picked some of the middle category up from Giant Bomb.

#94 Posted by FTomato (211 posts) - 5 months, 10 days ago

This is a thing that's happening, I guess.

Fuck you Alex.

#95 Posted by Nekrokreuz (171 posts) - 5 months, 10 days ago

A good 50% of those are very common here in California so I said about that many things on that list before. It seems like all of those are Ryanisms.

Also, middling doesn't mean sub-par, it means par.

#96 Posted by Village_Guy (2098 posts) - 5 months, 10 days ago

Actually, Will Smith from Tested said this, while Giant Bomb (particularly Ryan) was staunchly against it.

#98 Posted by MachoFantastico (3691 posts) - 5 months, 10 days ago

Like many, I use duder a lot nowadays.

#99 Posted by Antihippy (198 posts) - 5 months, 10 days ago

I've pretty much adopted their "weird phrase is a genre band name" joke.

#100 Posted by BBAlpert (664 posts) - 5 months, 10 days ago

This has gone much more in-depth in dissecting the Bombsquad's speech patterns than I had expected. I hope this doesn't start to cross (or hasn't already started crossing) into that patently creepy "hey I wonder which guy on the GB crew smells the best" idolatry territory.

Because if it has (although I don't think it has), I assure you that was not my intention.
