So I feel that the current state of mainstream rap/hip hop is absolute garbage. Everything I hear my classmates listen to consists of some 25 year old thug repeatedly saying "do the (insert stupid dance name)" for four minutes. Since I'm into alternative rock, I thought that maybe I might be able to enjoy the alternative hip hop or electro hop scenes. The problem is that I don't really know what rappers/groups are any good. A friend that has similar music tastes as me likes Kid Cudi, but I've never listened to any of his stuff. What rappers does GB like?
Sell me on modern hip hop
Bullshit. You can't say that about all Rap/Hip Hop." @MikeHawk: Rap/Hip hop ceased to exist somewhere around 2006. And that's pushing it. If you're listening to anything newer than that and enjoying it, you're probably some kind of complete joke as a person. "
Here's a start
@keyhunter: Stop listening to top 40, you have to dig a little to find some gems in any genre
naaah.....I wont do that because the majority of it is garbage, and that's coming from a hip hop lover.

And Bizzare Ride II the Pharcyde is also a great alternative album.
I still wouldn't consider this "modern Hip Hop" considering they've been around since the 80s but I just like reminding people that the Beastie Boys still have the same sound which I've found to be rare among A LOT of artists these days.
Anyways, listen to what makes you feel good. Whatever makes you happy.
Pharcyde were under appreciated! Love them!
Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy were just as amazing!
For albums that came out recently, check out:
I'm not a huge fan of rap/hip-hop in general, let alone what gets played on the radio, but I absolutely adore Del the Funky Homosapien's stuff and Deltron 3030. You should check some of it out.
Truth!" Why would I sell you on modern hip-hop when the Ghostface is still dropping bangers?

For hip-hop and rap, start from the late 80's and go to the mid 90's. People like 2Pac, Dre, Biggie, Ice Cube, Wu-Tang, all that shit, you'll find someone you like.
Ice Cube's still spitting game; his album Raw Footage, from 2008, was fucking great with tracks like "Hood Mentality" and "Why Me."
One rapper from this decade I'll give credit to is Chamillionaire; I always felt his album Ultimate Victory was underrated as hell, couple of standout tracks from it were "Hip Hop Police" and "Rocky Road."
" @McGhee_the_Insomniac: holy crap! that was crazy and awesome at the same time.@everyone else: Thanks for all of the input, I'll spend some time checking out all of these rappers and see what I like "Awesome! Glad you think so. Get one of their whole albums and listen to it all the way through. The songs flow together so well, it's genius.
One of my favorite hip-hop artists right now is DERT... He's an amazing mash up artist who've made albums pulling sounds from the the likes of Jose Gonzales and Björk... Needless to say this leeds to some very interesting and different Hip-Hop so if you're not too fond of the traditional maybe this is a good place to start:
(Ignore the first 4 songs)

Also, someone who likes alternative rock has no right to judge other peoples musical tastes. "Actually busdriver is really good, and Mos Def still makes rap that isn't horrible.
Like all great music that comes out these days you wont actually find it until you take some time to try and look. If you are going by just what is put on the radio then you are going to find 98% shitty, or sub par music.
I think to get into the more underground/alternative hip-hop, you gotta see what you like. (type any of these artists into youtube, listen to a few tracks, you like them, type their name in pandora and just see if anything else you like comes up)
Are you gonna be listening to it for more of a party, uplifting type of vibe? People Under the Stairs, Ugly Duckling, and Crown City Rockers are pretty good choices.
You want some more kind of "ghetto" tales and just street type shit? Wu-Tang Clan (and most everyone associated), Cannibal Ox, lots of the 90s artists (2Pac, NWA, Big L) are good to start with.
Abstract, almost weird stuff more your bag? Aesop Rock (I really have to try and decipher what he says a lot of the time, maybe he doesn't fit in this category), Dark Time Sunshine, and Eyedea & Abilities are fine starting points.
Political, society rhyme shit (similar to the "hood life" raps, but a bit more "deep") more your style? Immortal Technique, Curse Ov Dialect, and Dead Prez are all political a lot of the time (i don't agree with everything, but sometimes you're just in that mood, you know?).
You want battle, I'm the best MC because *insert crazy rhymes here*, songs? 7L & Esoteric, R.A. the Rugged Man, and The High & Mighty are nice.
More chill, relaxing, listening to some mellow beats instead? (I think this is my favorite type next to battling). A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, and The Sound Providers are great.
And finally, just wacky, I don't know where to classify them because they do different stuff artists. MF DOOM (and all aliases, look em up), De La Soul, and Hieroglyphics.
And many of these dudes delve into the other subgenres, so definitely just keep looking. I think anyone can get into any kind of music. Just takes time and dedication. The other day I heard some country that I kind of liked (I NEVER listen to country). But again, kind of liked.
