Last night I watched the hour long video that Victor Lucas did where he got a ton of famous game designers, and his fellow journalists, together to talk about why they loved Japan, and how Japanese games have Influenced their gaming lives in an attempt to raise money to help the disaster relief in Japan. So while I was taking a gander at my shelf of games today, I shockingly realized that I had a metric crap ton of Japanese games sitting on my shelf, and I never really realized just how many Japanese games I had. Not to mention that several of the games in my personal top games of all time are made by Japanese game designers.

So Giant Bomb community, what Japanese games have you fell in love with over the years and what Japanese games do you have sitting on your shelf right now?

A couple of my favourite Japanese games that heavily influenced me growing up were:

As for Japanese games that I currently have sitting on my shelf

If you are interested in watching the "Gamers <3 Japan" video you can watch it below. It is 1 hour long, and includes interviews from guys like Peter Molyneux, Will Wright and Ken Levine. If you want to donate to help the reconstruction of Japan you can go to www.gamersheartjapan.com and click on the big donate button. They are using the Red Cross to accept donations.

I don't think I'd even own a video game system anymore if I hadn't played Kirby Super Star, and by extension, Kirby's Adventure, which got me into Kirby in the first place.

As a kid, I had the opportunity to play lots of games. Most imminent in my memory right now would be Blades of Steel, Zelda, Zelda 2, Kirby's Adventure, Doom, and Donkey Kong Country, as well as some forgettable EC rated games on the Sega Pico. Sure enough, most of those games frightened me. The idea of dying petrified me, nearly made me cry. Maybe it was because Donkey Kong looked nearly realistic to me at the time, and so undeserving of the rigours of an early demise that I brought upon him.
But then there was Kirby. Like an animated piece of rubber from some kind of exotic cartoon, he never seemed bored or angry, and not being a realistic interpretation of anything, his doom didn't care the weight the giant gorilla's did, not to mention his power to inhale enemies held me spellbound. Kirby was amazing, and still is.

And for that reason, if I were one of the big shots in that video, I'd give my thanks to Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Kirby, and the father of Smash Brothers. He invented a character I liked before I started playing games, and one I'll probably like long after I stop playing them. That is, if I ever do.

Oh, and the Square Dream Team for Chrono Trigger.

Some of my favorite games have been Japanese. Final Fantasy, MGS, eff even Dynasty Warriors. And it's the country that spawned Drakengard and Nier which are great achievements in gaming if there ever were any.

And, of course, ATLUS.

I've donated a lot of money to the japanese developers over the years by buying their games since the  NES games.
Then the terrible disaster struck them and I donated around 900 bucks to help them(Japan) out and almost forcing friends and family to throw some money into that pot too.

I should probably make a list of all the Japanese developed games I own at some point though it could take a while to do so.

In short, I really like Japan.

Japanese porn ~ Yea!
Mosaic censoring ~ Boo!

I like JRPGs and anime, so I've got much love for their creations.

Besides, they gave us the dakimakura, the single greatest invention in the history of mankind!  (^+^)

The fact that this is the only mention of Deadly Premonition so far is tragic.

So many games out of Japan for me, although maybe less in some recent years, though Japanese games have also been some of my favorites for a long time. Not gonna list 'em all 'cause that would take quite some time, but I do love me some Japanese games.

I like both Endurance Runs very very much. I watched ALL of them.
Two days ago, I tried to start a poll about whether or not anyone wanted another Endurance Run, and a mod locked the poll after about three minutes.

That is baseless censorship if you ask me. If people want to vote on a poll, why stop them? DO YOU THINK THAT THE INTERNET WILL RUN OUT or something? It is just forum creep elitism if you ask me.

Anyway, I live in Japan and pay taxes here and put up with all the senior citizens' bullshit, like cutting in line, and expecting special treatment, so I am doing my best.

I did in my OP, but no one ever reads those so I understand not seeing it.

They locked it because the guys have said many times that they are probably not going to do another one any time soon because it takes too much time and work, and it's not something that can be forced. They need to find the right game and feel that it's the right time to do it. Every time someone asks to do another one the less and less they want to do it.

Plus there are people making threads about the next Endurance Run all the time. So while I'm sure your intentions were noble, from a mods point of view it was just another thread trying to discuss the same topic that has been made a dozen times over by now.
#40 Posted by Little_Socrates (5715 posts) -
@crusader8463: I read the full OP text, but I skimmed the list. Whoops!

@Little_Socrates: No worries. I just know that most people don't read OP's on this site. They just read the thread title and post. lol

This may be a bit off topic, but as someone who currently lives in Japan and who experienced the earthquake first hand, I can say it was a bit of a shock to experience something so violent.  Luckily, I was further north in Hokkaido, so I wasn't affected by the disaster too much.

The road to recovery for those living along the coast in the Fukushima and Sendai area will be long.  All the aftershocks have definitely made people more alert and the mental recovery from such a tragedy will be difficult.

I just want to say that donations to help rebuild are very helpful, but finding threads like these, are much more comforting.  It lets people around the world know that people truly care.

For me I think it was Shenmue that started my love for Japan. I just wish more self-proclaimed Japanophiles took the time to learn about their history and culture instead of just focusing on anime and games. You can't call yourself a Japanophile unless you at least have some basic understanding of such things as the Tokugawa period and the Meiji-restoration and some basic insight into Shinto religion. Japan is about more than anime, it has such a rich culture.

I can probably give a gabzlillion examples of why Japan is awesome, be it games, movies, comics or otherwise, but ill just name the most recent one that currently engulfed me; A game called Vanquish. I mean holy crap, I cannot remember the last time I had so much fun playing an action game, its like a pure dopamine rush. Also the mechanical design combined with perhaps the best animations ive saw this generation makes the game look gorgeous!
