SNES JRPGs

So, I'm watching the Chrono Trigger endurance run for the hell of it. It instantly reminds me of all the great JRPGs from when I was a kid. The next thought through my head was that I would play a new game like that on my PC.

Do you duders know if they still make sprite based 2d JRPGs like they used to? Or am I stuck with the virtual console? I have a GBA if that helps.

Go to the DS or PSP or something. That's where JRPGs have moved.

yea that genre has become pretty niche now, you gotta look all over for that style. PC and IOS have a decent few of those as well.

I won't comment on the quality, but all of Zeboyd games fit that bill.

You could try Cthulhu Saves The World, Radiata Historia, Dragon Quest IX, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, ...

I got To the Moon around Christmas time. Great game, but not exactly a JRPG in the usual sense.

Ayup. It has been that way for a long time. Disappointing for me as I don't particularly like handhelds, but Japan is enamored with them.

Since you have a GBA, here is a little list I found: https://jeiishin.wordpress.com/2008/08/22/gba-rpg-list-us/ I do recall really liking Riviera: The Promised Land and the Golden Sun games. Someone else may have more suggestions...

Golden Sun is exactly what you're looking for.

As others have said, DS and PSP are your best bet. Even Steam has some great throwback JRPGs.

I highly recommend Eternal Eden from Blossomsoft. It has a lot of traits from Chrono trigger, a large world to explore, great characters and a good storyline.

Off the top of my head, for GBA, there is...

Boktai: The Sun Is In Your Hands

Breath of Fire 1

Breath of Fire 2

Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls

Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Golden Sun

Golden Sun 2

Lufia: Ruins of Lore

Lunar Legend

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Phantasy Star Collection

Sigma Star Saga

Summon Night: Swordcraft Story

Summon NightL Swordcraft Story 2

Sword of Mana

That should help a bit.

Go play Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The lost age. You won't regret it.

Seiken Densetsu 3, with the English patch. If you're willing to go that route, it's one of the best RPGs ever.

^ Agreed. One my favorites. It's probably one of the most well known fan-translated games, so it's not at all hard to find.

Xthing Golden Sun, with the caveat that it's going to be really easy for you if you've played almost any other RPG. Cthulhu saves the world is great.

You should try the Super Robot Wars series then, it got me hooked up for a long long time

PSP

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

Final Fantasy IV and V I believe(maybe even a couple other ones like FFII or something.)

Not 2D, but Valkyria Chronicles 2 is supposed to be better than the first and that was fantastic.

PSN has some good 2D JRPGs like FFVI and FF Tactics.

Which is really unfortunate because that's exactly the type of game that I don't want to play on a portable device.
