Change is Coming

He'll still be contributing to Screened and Giant Bomb as an "East Coast Correspondent" and will still Skype in with Rorie on Behind the Screened Door. I'm sure he'll be doing a lot of videos and interviews of East Coast events and developers, but he won't be in the Whiskey San Francisco offices anymore.  It sounds like the move was a personal decision, and Whiskey is accommodating his decision and want to keep him on, regardless. No word yet on if they're setting up an East Coast office, but I think it's much more likely that he'll be working out of his home. We'll probably still see him around from time-to-time and he'll still be a heavy influence on the sites, but this will undoubtedly shake things up a bit. This will allow them to cover a lot more, however, and try some new things, so I'm optimistic.

Thoughts?

My initial thought is, "Uh-oh, unleashed Rorie". I fuckin' love the dude but he strikes me as needing a tempering force at times.

#3 Posted by habster3 (3595 posts) -

Things won't be the same -.-

#4 Posted by pjacobson21 (198 posts) -

well it sounds like its what he wants, and kudos to the crew for accommodating the move so I guess it isn't too bad.  Just have to wait and see how much he still ends up contributing, I really hope it's a good amount as Alex is one of the guys I remember watching way back when I was younger on gamespot, and its neat to still watch his videos now.  I've always liked his on screen personality, and the few times he joins in on the bombcast I love it.
Best of luck in New York, Alex!

Is neat to see GB expanding; there'll be a bomb in every state soon enough! As for Alex leaving, it does kinda suck since he rapidly went from being an occasional cameoster to virtually a full on GB staff member. He made for some great Kinect quick looks and fitted the bill of still being ''that guy who plays a lot of really bad games''. Overall, though, I much prefer him through his writing anywhoo, and think he's  the best writers in WM atm, so I'll quickly get used to it.

Meh

#7 Posted by SSValis (1136 posts) -

I doubt their setting up a east coast office but I think he will still be a contributer. This site just got a  little less cynical jk..

#8 Posted by Blair (2500 posts) -

He's still around which I'm satisfied with.  Alex is someone that I appreciate, and I'm glad he'll still be a part of WM going forward.  Consider me content.

Odd... Those personal reasons must be very important.

#10 Posted by karatetron (690 posts) -

NOOOOOOOOOO!

#11 Posted by SlightConfuse (3963 posts) -

for starters we will probably get news that is not two days old.

im glad the WM people let him do this, it benefits them to have a man on the east coast.

Alex is cool welcome to the east coast buddy hope you got a good winter coat when winter hits.

#13 Posted by Vinny_Says (5686 posts) -

bah....he'll be back within the year. If I've watched the correct amount of sitcoms, Alex's "true love" will break his heart and force him to move away from NYC in order to rejoin the rest of the cast and realize that true love was right in front of him all along.

So I guess this means he "officially" works for Giantbomb.com now.....

#14 Posted by Skald (4367 posts) -

If this means more editorial content, I'm totally cool with it.

#15 Posted by FreakAche (2949 posts) -

I say bring on Rich as an "East Coast Correspondent".

#16 Edited by benjaebe (2783 posts) -

It's unfortunate. His presence in the Happy Hour, Quick Looks, etc. will be missed but if he spends more time writing that's fine with me- It's always a pleasure to read. All the luck to him over here on the beast coast and happy to see that WM kept him signed on.

#17 Posted by pandorasbox (302 posts) -

does this mean that screened is going to be just matt rorie now, or has somebody filled his spot?

also, i feel genuinely sad about this decision. i hope he has a good reason, as navarro is one of the better staff members at whiskey media who isn't directly part of giantbomb.

<3 navarro

Whiskey Media really needs an official presence on the East Coast. It's my favorite coast.

#20 Posted by SethPhotopoulos (5108 posts) -

Its gonna be sad to not see him interact with the others physically (not dirty) anymore.

#21 Posted by Rudeboy217 (1766 posts) -

This is kind of a bummer but now Screened will have someone in NYC, where all the movies first come out.

#22 Posted by Stackboy (481 posts) -

This is a good thing, Whiskey Media is expanding.

World domination is what it's all about.

#23 Posted by rjayb89 (7717 posts) -

If he wants to head to the least coast, then that's fine by me.

His GF lives in New York. He talked about it on the Screened podcast.
This is actually kind of a good thing- he'll still be on the podcast, and a lot of movie shit happens in New York. Same with gaming shit, but to a lesser degree, so the fact that they have representation is a good thing.
#25 Posted by pandorasbox (302 posts) -
@rjayb89: excuse me sir, you typo'd "beast coast".

;)

Dude needs to decide which coast he wants to work at

Shit, I'll be able to visit Alex Navarro within  driving distance!
Time to get ready for a stalker operation (again)

Best of luck with the move to NY. I can only hope for more Roriecasts :P

This is why he's giving no indication of where he's living.

He made mention of this in the podcast. He's not looking forward to you.

I don't need indications. I RELISH THE LACK OF AN INDICATION.

OHHHHH DUDE SICK BURN!!!!!!!!!
Honestly, this just proves you haven't been paying attention to any of the shit that goes down on Screened. I understand other complaints about Alex (Some people hate his voice, which I get, and he does tend to be very negative at times), but if the podcast and video/review coverage has shown anything it is that Alex does know his movies.
Also, he's not leaving the site, so you lose anyway.

Crazy business. Good luck to Alex.

#38 Posted by Marokai (2808 posts) -

Personally I've never been a huge Alex fan, but I think this decision is a positive one (and not for jerkish reasons). I think Alex really excels in his writing more than his camera presence.

That's too bad. He'll still be contributing to both sites, but I'm not sure how well Screened is going to do with just Rorie in the office.

I'm with you on this. He's a great writer, one of the best on the Whiskey sites IMO.

East Coast, West Coast... When's Whiskey going to cover the Mid-West scene, yo?

They've implied that they intend to bring someone else in, at some point. Possibly one of their current contributers, possibly someone new.
#45 Posted by Kurtdyoung (1300 posts) -

I fear change! This makes me wonder how fucking horrible it would be if Jeff or Ryan just up and left. I understand that Alex will still be working with Whiskey media, but I have a feeling we will be seeing a LOT less of him. Depressed face.

What midwest scene? I'm from Illinois and even I'll admit we don't have shit here.

Were I to guess, next to "Whiskey Media San Francisco" and "Whiskey Media New York", "Whiskey Media Omaha" doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Awww man! I knw having Alex work with Giant Bomb in person was too good to last.

#50 Posted by MisterMouse (3540 posts) -

I mean if he is making the move it is probably best for him, and so it can only be best for the rest of the sites.
