We all have seen something like this happen. A publisher buys out a franchise/keeps a franchise from the main creator of said franchise and eventually destroys said franchise due to stupidity inside their studios. No matter what though, the original creators cannot get their franchise BACK from any publisher whatsoever.
This sounds so highly illegal and stupid that things NEED to be checked and fixed within not only the video game industry, but ALL creative industries out there. Movies have this even worse. Books have this, if you want proof just search for James Patterson and you will see a guy whos name is worth gold without him writing a single word of most of the novels anymore.
Another thing is that copywrite laws are preventing freedom of speech almost. Look at Earthbound. LOOK AT IT!!!!! That alone tells you that copywrite laws and how much they are worth and such is a level of stupidity that I don't even think George W Bush could have done. They cause more problems than naught in all creative fiction/media and should only be used in inventions like technology and fucking every day usable things like wrenches.
It is such a clusterfuck that most lawyers almost seem like they are putting their hands in the air and just saying, "I just dunno anymore..." when it comes to this shit.
A creative/fiction based creation by either a man or a team SHOULD have ownership over it for all of time with only people borrowing it for a while to publish their things until the contract runs out or if they resign back on, that is how it SHOULD work. The way it works now is that if you sign anything, your shit belongs to THEM now. Does not matter in the slightest if an indy game made by a single guy did it and wants to publish it on console, that game the indy game maker made is now completely and utterly owned by the publisher NO MATTER WHAT!
No wonder devs are going for crowd sourcing and Digital only, at least THEY can still release an amazing game without taking that shit from publishers basically stealing their games.
What is your take and the copywrite bullshit going on these days?
