So I decided to see what Metacritic was like now...

I never really use metacritic but the reliance on it for a lot of publishers made me interested to see how much it's changed. On the games page Resident evil 6 was rated as favorable while Tokyo Jungle was rated as mediocre.

In other words it hasn't really changed at all.

You shouldn't have done this.

And I don't know what you're talking about. RE6 has a score of 66 while Tokyo Jungle has a score of 73.

I love metacritic, i compiles all the reviews for games in one place. It saves me from having to search through sites to find a review of a game, because metaoritic just directly links to the original article.

Yep. It's disgusting the way publishers use it, but it's a great tool for the consumer.

Well Satanism aside, it still seems hated.

@Xpgamer7: Yeah, I was checking the X360 version, it seems. But you're making a serious mistake by actually taking these scores seriously and judging a game's perceived quality on them.

I need to read some of the more positive and well-written reviews of RE6. The fact that the negative reviews between Phil Kollar, Jim Sterling, Kevin VanOrd, and our own Brad Shoemaker nearly agree on every single front is damning, IMO. Those are four guys I trust that all agree that Resident Evil 6 is a bad, bad video game, and they all explain why in a cohesive and uniform manner. Sterling's got the closest to a dissenting opinion in that he damns the visual design as well as everything else, and VanOrd is the only person to mention sound design, but that's all that really changes between those reviews.

Early on, those more positive reviews were more divergent. Now that most everything should be released, I'll have to dig back through those more positive reviews and see if there's consensus there as well.

Yep. When I want to check out a few reviews for a game I'm interested in, I go to metacritic for the reasons you mentioned.

Metacritic mainly is nice as an aggregate or finding other reviewer opinions on a game.

I used to also like user reviews but have lost faith in those since they are often troll hacked to bring the score down. Even though they find and fix it- the damage is done. Just like the games in the Art Gallery show case that I forget the name of, the internet made this worthless too.

Metacritic just lets you see it all in one place. Saves you time and hassle.

The 360 version has more reviews, including some reviews for both versions that aren't included in the PS3's set; don't know why. Metacritic is more useful than individual reviews but less useful than being to interpret what reviews are actually saying. If a review complains about difficulty 90% of the time it's because the reviewer just sucks at the game or alternatively just went in expecting to spend less time reviewing it and is irritated that it took a little longer. If a game has universal high scores it's probably not as good as they say it is (with some exceptions); particularly if there's a "Zelda" in the title or "of Duty." MMOs seem to universally get high scores (then crash immediately) so I guess I'd be more interested in one that got mixed reviews instead.

For something like Rotten Tomatoes often mixed reviews indicates a more provocative and interesting movie than a high approval rate.

It's also kind of weird how gamerankings and metacritic belong to the same company these days, since they used to be sort of competing websites before they were both under the CBSi banner (and I guess they still are).

@Little_Socrates: If it matters to you at all I was having a Skype conversation with Jason Oestreicher from Game Informer the other day and he told me that the guy who did their review Tim Turi is a huge RE nerd the kind of guy who really digs into the lore even outside the video games. He gave it a pretty high mark too. So there are seemingly die hard fans out there who are still digging the game. I'd say if you want to see the other side of the coin on thoes reviews that would be a good starting point.

Yep. Too many "professional" video game reviewers are just excited fans.

Metacritic picks and chooses which reviews get listed, so to say it compiles "all" the reviews is incorrect.

Furthermore the site doesn't always link to the original article. (if it's a print-only review, or a Famitsu) Whereas other times the link is dead or doesn't lead anywhere. (particularly for older games/movies) Though I suppose that last one isn't really their fault.
