So I saw this thread on reddit. As an outsider looking in, it seems pretty clear that the main mod for twitch is in the wrong.

There hasn't been any comment from Twitch apparently, and they even tried to censor reddit. Maybe Patrick or Alex will mention it on Bombing in the AM.

Seems pretty crazy for Twitch to have such drama, being a service prominent in both the new consoles.

This was brought to my attention an hour or so ago. Seems crazy. Glad to see that Werster has had his ban removed (I believe they all have actually at this point).

Also, I will say this is probably the last thing Twitch wants what with the PS4 and Xbox One just hitting. I'm pretty sure Horror's head will roll and a whole group of admins will get cut and replaced.

If nothing else, I hope the higher-ups have a serious talk to their staff about how to act professionally. Having a support staff for a big company like Twitch who write shit like this on the official twitter page is not okay.

Edit: A more comprehensive list of events can be found on the speedrun subreddit: Here

I can't actually acquire instances of his shitty behaviour, I assume because he/twitch have deleted and obfuscated as much as they can.

One user on reddit mentioned this is what happens when you mix work and personal life. He or she is correct, in addition I'd argue this is what happens when you make your leisure activities into your career; either you treat it like a hobby and act unprofessionally, or you treat it like a profession and suddenly you don't have your favorite leisure activity anymore.

When you are in charge of other people, and you show someone preferential treatment because you have sex with them, or want to have sex with them, you Goddamn well _should expect_ other users are going to want preferential treatment as well.

With all this said

A Speed runner on Twitch TV by the name Duke_Bilgewater had made the following comment after the emote had come to surface:

"Hey Horror, what's the easiest way into your pants so I can get a global emote too?"

This later had set off a chain of reactions that resulted in a lot of streamers and viewers preaching "Remove Horror" other casters emotes which were considered appropriate at the time have been removed by Horror and deemed inappropriate. Anyone fund supporting the "Remove Horror" campaign including Peaches and Werster will end up having their channel closed and IP banned.

Hey @duke_bilgewater is the guy who ran Hotline Miami at SGDQ 2013 and made a very heartfelt callout for Ryan.

I got to watch a speed runner get IP banned yesterday because of this; granted he didn't really do himself any favors. It's just shocking that Werster (a runner I never watch) who constantly has 3,000 viewers as soon as he signs on got IP banned.

Personally, everything I found yesterday trying to research this puts the blame on both the speed runners that got banned and twitch. Neither side did themselves any favors with the way everyone was acting.

@kidavenger: one of the main admins of twitch is a furry, and his boyfriend is a very small time streamer. The top streamers make money from giving people incentives in the form of things like custom emoticons for subscribing but it's incredibly difficult for even them to get emoticons approved. The admin gave his boyfriend a global emoticon which was discovered to come from furry porn, while he removed somebody else's emoticons for being inappropriate. This caused people to question the admin (who is named Horror) and anybody that said anything about horror got IP banned and Twitch admins are going out of their way to cover it up everywhere they can by censoring reddit posts on the gaming subreddits and banning anybody who says anything.

Basically twitch admins acting like a small shitty forum rather than a global company.

If that play by play is accurate, every ban seems warranted. What Horror did initially was totally wrong and he should be reprimanded for it, but that does not excuse everyone acting like a bunch of fucking babies. Half of those are "Stop touching me. I'm not touching you!" bullshit that siblings do that would get your parents to take your toys away or ground you for a week. To quote a once great leader of a secret ninja clan, "Babies?! They're babies!"

I think that expressed the situation perfectly. Especially when you just think how shitty twitch chat really is. On top of the fact their twitter support account was basically trolling everyone.

The Situation

  1. Twitch has chat icon/emoticon/emote like Giant Bomb's :jeff, :brad, etc.
  2. Each stream can have its own emote.
  3. Twitch mod made an emote of his boyfriend as a furry into a global emote (available on all streams).
  4. Streamer asked what the fastest way into the mod's pants were so he could get a global emote too.
  5. Streamer got banned for that comment.
  6. People started calling for that mod, "Horror", to be removed.
  7. Those people started to get banned. Internet anger intensifies.
  8. Twitch seems to be ignoring and avoiding this situation, though someone ("Jasonzm") saying they're Horror's boss said that the mod wouldn't be removed no matter what.
  9. Internet anger intensifiefies.

At least that's what I've gathered from skimming through these links.

I'd like to point out that while they contacted reddit mods (not admins, important differencein that mods run subreddits and aren't employed by reddit or anything) there's no evidence that the reddit mods actually took down the posts because the twitch mods asked them to(they claim that it was because there was obvious vote manipulation going on on those posts and some witchhunting, and posts have since been left up so I'm almost inclined to believe them for now?). I'd also point out at this time that it was one twitch mod, who much like mods of other communities aren't actually employed by twitch but are volunteers, so it's not so much an official twitch action.

Don't get me wrong the original banning of dudes or whatever was shitty, but the whole conspiracy theory collusion angle seems to be a bit too witchhunty to me (and don't forget that reddit has been wrong about a lot of conspiracy theory buillshit before).

This whole "controversy" is so fucking stupid. A streamer made a really shitty comment and got banned for it, and yet Horror was somehow the asshole? So what if he made his boyfriend's "fursona" a global emoticon? Who cares? Does it actively replace someone else's emoticons?

Just, ugh. This is why we can't have nice things.

I don't see the issue with what Twitch did if this is everything, you can't just shit on a moderator. Seems like the moderator is a little sketchy, but that doesn't give the mob of internet retards that live their lives on twitch grounds to do whatever they want with him.

If I was Twitch I'd be trying to bury how embarrassing their community is too.

It's a gross misuse of his power. Emoticons are a pretty big deal on Twitch and if you get good ones and people subscribe to your channel (for real money) you can make some good money from it.

But it's a global emoticon, not a channel specific emoticon. Which means it's "free," right? Or do the emoticon creators get paid per use? Can they even track that? If the incentive for subscribing to a twitch stream is .PNGs then a global emoticon is pretty worthless, correct? You say the admin is abusing his power, but I'm not seeing it that way. The first guy made a really shitty "joke" to the admin, and then he got bitch slapped for it. I don't think Horror should have started handing out bans left and right, but it's not hard to see how everything escalated the way it did.

This is just a really dumb problem and everyone involved look like chumps.

The thing is though, it's incredibly difficult to get emoticons on Twitch. Horror removed somebody elses emoticons for being inappropriate and immediately fast tracked his boyfriends inappropriate emoticon to the site, then somebody joked about it and bans started being handed out left and right. That is a blatant misuse of power. Mostly the part where he starting fucking banning everybody for calling him out on it.

It's not an argument between Reddit and Twitch. It's an argument between Twitch and its users. They are banning people whose only source of income is streaming simply for mentioning how terrible of an admin Horror is.

The real problem is people acting like the thing they are taking care of, moderating, is their own back yard - the rules don't apply to them, only to others, and even then not consistently.

People that seek positions of power are the most likely to be the sort that abuses it.

Seems like he shouldn't have really made that emoticon, and if he did, he should take a joke about how ridiculous that is, and if he didn't, should have stopped at warning that one guy, at the very most. It's not his job to ban anyone who disagrees with him, it's to enforce rules and order. Not to create a little fiefdom where he is lord.
