So what does everyone think of Polygon?

I know many people here don't like sites like IGN or Kotaku but I was just wonderign what people's opinion on Polygon is. They are relatively new but I have enjoyed the articles and features they have been doing.

If you search the forum, you'll see a number of very long threads regarding this topic, including a few with some kind input from Mr. Justin McElroy (who, while I don't care much for Polygon, I am an enormous fan of in almost everything he does).

Eh, they are okay I guess. I don't give two shits about em' though.

I steer clear of them.

If I could get an RSS of just their Reviews and Features then I'd love them. They pump out a lot of news that I don't give a fuck about though, which makes their RSS feed bloated with content that I ignore. That makes it easy for me to ignore it all together. So basically I only go to the site when Phil or Russ tweet a link to their latest review or feature.

Don't read any of their articles or reviews so I don't know.....all I know is I hate how the website is designed.

Polygons are great.

They have some really excellent features, but their website is one of the single most over-designed, hideous things I have had the misfortune of looking at. And that shit with their pet Geico representative in the forums is just gross.

I don't read them, but I like Besties/the McElroy brothers (who are not experts, so don't follow their advice, no matter what Travis says), so thumbs up, I guess?

meh, occasionally they do something interesting but it is kind of shit. Also the site is horribly over-designed

Whenever I look for a article worth clicking on il go over to polygon and they will have something good up.

It could be the greatest thing ever and I still wouldn't go, I don't have time for another website about videogames.

They have some decent articles. As others have mentioned though, their website is an overly designed piece of trash that makes me never want to go there.

As I grow older, I'm realizing that its not the websites that matter but the individual people who write for the website. Which is precisely why I follow MANY video game journalists/personalities on Twitter. I visit GiantBomb for funny entertainment and use Twitter to gather any relevant gaming news. In a way I guess, my favorite gaming website is Twitter.

Looks alright. Just scrolling down it I did come across what seemed to be 4 stories about the same JJ Abrams/Valve thing, so that sucks.

I don't like everyone that works there but they're fine.

Over designed, trying too hard. It's video game journalism. Not the Lockerbie bombing.

Much like certain fast-food outlets, I know they exist, I don't begrudge people going there, but have not felt the need to go there myself.

I was gonna say something subtle about not liking the design and them being rather pretentious, but this sums it up much more eloquently.

I read their reviews for games I'm interested in from time to time, but I hate the design of their website -- I only really go there if I have a direct link to a review or article (I use Metacritic as a portal for game reviews when i want to read a bunch).

I like em a lot, I just wish they would do more game news reporting, rather than just Some news. The Verge/Gaming gets all the game news scoops. i.e. Console stuff, even some game releases if they're big, Halo.

I don't use mobile sites, so I don't really use it. On a desktop it's just bothersome and I dislike the design.

Yeah, you get that pretty clearly if you listen to any podcast he's on for a long stretch of time. Eh, whatever - there's always someone I don't like in a 'cast crew though, so I got used to him.

I guess i''m still undecided on what i make of the site because i don't really agree with the few reviewers or reviews that i have read on the site.

To name a few, so i guess i will poke around every so often and get a better feel of the site before i judge. One thing i can say is layout of the site is pretty slick, kind of like a digital magazine.

I’m a fairly intolerant person, and I just don’t see this terrible site others are seeing. Giant Bomb is still my primary gaming site, but Polygon strikes a nice balance of personality, long features, and news. There’s more news stuff than Giant Bomb, but not to the ridiculous “here’s the pre-order bonuses for a game you don’t care about” extent that a Kotaku or Destructoid can get to. Some of the features are too self-important for my tastes, but a post-Patrick Giant Bomb user complaining about that seems like throwing stones in a glass house.

I don’t find Justin McElroy to be obnoxious at all (well, most of the time, but we all have our moments), and I really enjoy the Besties podcast. The level of discourse of their GOTY video show impressed me compared to Giant Bomb’s — watching that made me take the site more seriously.

I don't generally browse their site but once in awhile I get linked to some really good articles from Polygon.

I really, really dislike their website design. The banner-ad looking pieces reach directly to the edge of the screen, and I feel like there's some piece of the image I'm not seeing, and the rest of it is full of wasted space. Their features are very cool, though; it's interesting to get a deep look in the the history and development of certain games, but sometimes they drag on for far too long. Their reviews are reviews, and it's always nice to get another opinion on a game. They don't really offer anything that Giantbomb doesn't, and I don't care for the personalities there, so I don't visit often. It's okay, though.

I think the website is beautiful, responsive, and very browsable (meaning, you don't necessarily need to know what you're looking for to find something cool, you can just keep on discovering) . In my opinion, some of the writing has its head firmly up its own ass, but that's okay too – Polygon as a whole feels like a different voice, which I appreciate.

I´ll be honest I´ve been there the one time and to be frank despised the site´s design so much that I dont wish to go there by myself (unless Patrick links to one of their articles on Fridays )

I have major issues with a few of their key staff members so I have no interest in going there.

these are the extent of my feelings as well

I was turned off initially by how seriously they took themselves (I saw them referring to their articles as "beautiful" in an early introductory post and rolled my eyes) so I un-bookmarked it, but find myself following Twitter links there pretty often.

Yea..I don't like any of the staff. Also Microsoft paying for their pretentious as hell documentary was a big NOPE for me.

Sure, but he broke the Xbox Horizon commercial news!

I like Polygon quite a bit-- they have some great features, an awesome podcast, and I'm a huge fan of the McElroy dynasty.

That being said, I'm not hot on Arthur Gies and Philip Kollar-- not that I dislike either, but just not a big fan of their reviews.

It's fine. A little stuffy. I save their interesting long form articles and interviews to Pocket and read them when I have time.

They write decent long form essays and their coverage is pretty good overall. I like their podcast but don't like some of their writers and their design is a little irratating even though i understand what their going for. I guess their ok in the end but i don't have them bookmarked.

I visit Giant Bomb for the forums. People hardly write for Giant Bomb anymore.

Actually, a lot of the news stories are provided by the forums and appear later as articles on the respective sites, Giant Bomb included.

How are they provided by the forums?

I'm not a fan of the inconsistent font, font size and font color and ginormous images. It looks good but it's unreadable at times.

As for actual content it's alright. Its a website, about games.

The whole idea of taking gaming journalism to new heights they were talking about in the making of documentary fell through but i wasn't really expecting anything more than what they're doing. I mean all the people over there have been doing this for years before polygon and a lot of them worked together before so of course it wasn't going to be any different than before.

@RockyRaccoon37: Like a news feed almost, people frequent less known sites around the web and re-post interesting (and less interesting) findings here. I've seen it happen quite a bit. Then an article springs up from Giant Bomb on the subject.

I enjoy the Besties and follow those 4 on twitter. Don't visit the website much.
