I have this weird obsession that's starting to grow in my brain. For some reason I have the sudden urge to collect the entire run of the 750 or so US release NES game cartridges. Yes, all these games are available via emulation/VC/re-release/whatever, but I kinda want the stacks upon stacks of carts accessible to me. I don't know why, but lately I've just figured that it would be a cool thing to have, even if they majority of them are just in giant bins and stacked in shelves or hidden away in a closet.

The reason I've had this itch is because I made some space in a spare bedroom we have to set up a retro gaming area. Until now I've not split my gaming areas, but I have this huge CRT set that I need to either get rid of or put to use. I've decided that I want to go ahead and use it for a pre-GCN/Xbox/PS2 gaming setup and that I'll get some switchers and that I'll have a bunch of old consoles hooked up to it. It'll be where my son cuts his teeth on gaming and it'll be fun for friends that are looking for a little retro fix.

So, am I crazy? I already have 100 carts, give or take a few. I figure to complete the collection it would cost around $4000, but I'd spread this out over many years and limit myself to about $30 a month or so until I get there. Bulk buys will obviously speed up the process and cut down on overall cost.

Seriously, somebody stop me before I get this idea really rolling.

Stop! It's expensive, people have done it already, and there's always emulation. With a hundred games already, you've probably got most of the best ones. Having the cartridges for your favorites and playing them on the original hardware is great, but trying to own every NES game just isn't worth it, because there's a lot of crap in there. You'll also run the risk of overwhelming your son with choice; it's easy to overlook a great game because it's hard or starts off slow when you've got hundreds of other games to choose from.

Dude yes. Just make all the cables look nice and rack all the consoles. Maybe a sweet shelf for setting the games on and a sweet retro paint job on the walls. Yeahhhhhhh, that sounds bad ass.

Don't do it.

#7 Posted by RaceKickfist (218 posts) -

Hmmm, that's a good point about collecting a lot of crap and overwhelming my kid with choice. Maybe I'll start with the games I know not to be terrible and prioritize my collection that way. Over time I can add the crappier stuff if I'm still motivated to get them all.

$30 a month isn't bad, I know people who spend five times that smoking... and this collection is going to last pretty much forever. I wouldn't do it personally, but it is an awesome hobby.

With $30 a month, it'll take you 11 years.

#20 Posted by fwylo (3556 posts) -

Do it.

Or simply buy new games with that money. I don't know, it's up to you. I would just emulate it and use $4000 to buy new games, maybe get a new pc.

#23 Posted by StupidGamer (155 posts) -
Oh no! It's too late! I've created the spreadsheets and now there's no going back.

Well, there are obviously going to be bigger months as I come across bulk deals (already contacted a guy about one) or harder to find games. Even if it takes 11 years, I'm fine with that, though I'd really like to try and do it in 4-5 years, if possible. We'll see...
#24 Posted by StupidGamer (155 posts) -

Day 1 haul...two bulk buys and I netted just under 250 games and only about 4-5 doubles. Some rare ones too!

Think about how much money you'll spend now, and how you you'll make 20 years later.

@StupidGamer:  Just make sure you look up the latest comments on the blog so you dont request something that's already been sold. I update it daily and approve comments as quickly as i can just so i don't get duplicate people asking.
