Fuck you, everything is great! 17%
Dude, it's fine. stop whining! 36%
Meh, it's ok... I guess. I don't really care but i still voted anyway. 12%
Yeah, it should be better. And it will be... right? right? 28%
Everything is on fire and not in a good way! I cannot believe they are doing this to me! 2%
*Just show me the answer and I wish there was an option in the poll creation for this* 5%

So, it's been a couple of weeks since the relaunch and we all had the chance to really experience the new Giant Bomb. Now may be a good time to look at our new home. At first glance everything looks quite nice and new and stuff but from my own experience and quite a few forums threats I can tell not everything is gold... or at least working. Here are my main issues:

  1. Video problems
  2. chat and poll problems
  3. general stability issues
  4. almost no new features and loss of old ones
  5. lack of transparency about the development progress (Dave's post was last updated over a month ago)

What's your take on this?

#51 Edited by Winternet (8059 posts) -

"Almost no new features" Oh, you mean the Professional Wednesdays and the Unprofessional Fridays. And the Interview Dumptruck. Dude, you're totally right.

Also, regarding technical issues, there's an entire forums just for that. If you have problems, go there. I must say, in my case, that I have no problems navigating Giant Bomb. The videos work fine and everything downloads at the max speed my Internet is able to.

One more thing, why can't I answer "It's all great" without saying "fuck you"? I really don't want to do it, but you leave me with no other choice, so . . .

Well, I don't like that it defaulted to white. That's just racist.

I think it's hilarious and perfect that this is the first thing to show up in my inbox since the site relaunched.

No new features? Yeah watching a video on one computer than it continuing right where I left off is like nothing at all.

I don't miss anything from the old site, really like the new features. The only single thing is the video lag. I just end up downloading everything now as it is unwatchable otherwise. Fixing that would be real nice.

The whole redesign is just so... so... unneccesary. It just doesn't improve what went before. That's the problem. It's a sideways step.

This is kind of where I've always been on the site redesign. Like, I get the legal necessity of it all and everything, the old whiskey platform had to go because of the acquisition and they needed to rebuild on a new CBSi approved platform, but there's something to be said for biting off a more reasonable amount to chew and then building onto it as time goes on. It doesn't improve much, like you said, and there's less actual features than there was before.

They're always working on it, they say anyway, but when asked where achievement data or quests are in the pipeline of future site development, it's basically a far off dream. That.. is kind of a huge bummer, because the loss of so much of the neat little shit this site used to have has made the site feel a lot more clinical. The activity feeds finally being back is great, and would be even better, if they worked more than 30% of the time.

Beyond that, the general site design philosophy is just one I've never cared for. After the redesign first launched one of the users here called it "Polybomb" and that stuck with me. The site overall just feels like an imitation of the hip-and-trendy design philosophy of the moment. The design of the site itself actually conveys less information than it used to by adopting this awful Metro-esque picturebook design that I have just simply never liked. So while I understand the necessity of the redesign, this redesign in particular just feels like it could've been done a lot better than trying to make it super shiny.

And yeah, the lack of communication. It super sucks. It double super sucks because this has been an issue for years and there's really no excuse for it by now.

As for the site content itself; actually okay right now. There really needs to be more staff-specific premium content like Bradley May Cry, Load Our Last Save (which has basically disappeared), and patrick-does-whatever, and I kind of think Professional Wednesdays is a waste of time and resources, but other than that they seem to have the right idea.

Site's fine! Quit your complaining!

#56 Posted by Branthog (5597 posts) -

And by a couple of weeks, you mean eight of them? :P

#57 Posted by sins_of_mosin (1539 posts) -

After the redesign, it just seems like the site barely has any activity. I don't care to watch their little videos. Be nice if they actually did some features or be reliable for news about the industry. Say all the blah about IGN but at least they are putting up things to look at.

The live streams are great. Keeps the site interesting even when the new releases aren't great.

Side note - I don't see the point of including a "see the results" options in polls, specifically polls like this one.

The bottom line is that for legal reasons related to the sale of Whiskey Media properties, GB had to move away from the old Distillery platform to a new one. Considering that this entire current site was built essentially from scratch in under a year, it's actually a pretty big accomplishment, and I assure that top men are working hard every day to make it even better.

This. I'd be more frustrated with the recent site issues if even having a live site wasn't a technical achievement in itself. That combined with the pretty much nonstop fixes that have been going on means I'll keep coming back. Now where's my friends' activity feed, guys? :P

It is a little weird how now we can flag from the moble site but can't reply or quote. Hopefully they're working on that.

#62 Edited by CPC6128 (11 posts) -

No sir, I don't like it. I want my achievements and trophies back - no other site came close to GiantBomb for that stuff.

#63 Posted by NekuSakuraba (7184 posts) -

The videos load a little bit slower for me now, but other than that there hasn't been anything too big to worry out, they just have to work out a few kinks. Content wise, the site is great, I don't see what people are complaining about.

#64 Edited by chilibean_3 (1698 posts) -

I'm all for the new site design but some parts of it is pretty broken or don't work at all. Now that they have launched Comic Vine we can expect these things to start getting improved.

#65 Edited by ArbitraryWater (12130 posts) -

I will stop complaining once I can see the blogs and statuses of the people I follow. I commend the engineers for building a website from scratch in only a year, but the features that are missing happen to be ones that I used quite frequently.

#66 Posted by ThePickle (4169 posts) -

OKAY NOW THE SITE IS WHITE AND I HAVE NO WAY OF CHANGING TO BLACK. FUCK THIS SITE.

Video streaming has been pretty busted for me on the new site but appart from that I like the new front page. It looks cool.

That's definitely my biggest pet peeve about the redesign. Otherwise, I'm fine with the changes in general.

I like how the window is scalable, this lets us mobile users access GB much easier than the old non-premium site. The only thing I'd say is a step back is that there isn't a "latest on forums" on the mainpage.

#71 Edited by Rafaelfc (1467 posts) -

I only have one complaint, really, new video player is GARBAGE.

Seriously, there are porn sites around with video players that are more reliable than GB's.

#72 Posted by cmblasko (1354 posts) -

Only serious complaint I have is the video player's poor performance. Besides that everything seems to be working fine.

#73 Posted by jakob187 (21763 posts) -

@pr1mus said:

The video player is also the worst one yet but you can use the Youtube player instead. Is that still only for subscribers though? Because that is madness to keep the Youtube player behind the subscription.

Yes, it is. In turn, I spend far less time on Giant Bomb nowadays and way more on YouTube.

They're getting settled into the new website.

ahahahaha

#75 Posted by prapin (32 posts) -

One of the biggest problems is how the forums are a big hugbox and any controversial idea that doesn't line up with the circlejerking gets deleted.

#76 Posted by Darson (448 posts) -

This site now requires you to be online in order to use it. That is some CBS bullshit right there. I want my Giant Bomb on the disc and with a proper manual.

Zing

This. This is the only problem I have with the new site. I miss seeing all of that relatively easily.

#78 Posted by JasonR86 (9729 posts) -

Dude it's fine.

#79 Posted by Cold_Wolven (2295 posts) -

Though I can only seem to watch videos at low quality just so I can have an almost smooth viewing experience the video remembering playback position is a cool new feature. I do miss forums being at the bottom of the front page and also knowing what forum a particular topic is from since they all get tossed under the title general discussions.

#80 Posted by probablytuna (3831 posts) -

It's fine, even without the forums at the bottom of the homepage. I'm used to it by now.

#81 Edited by altngr (50 posts) -

@abendlaender: Same, the forum shortcut is the only thing I would change.

Overall the site has been great for me. No video or loading or stability issues. Maybe I'm just lucky.

#82 Edited by Prestige (110 posts) -

The new video player works well for me, both high/progressive and streaming. It's better than the previous player, and the one before that, in my experience.

Also, any time you include a poll option that says "fuck you," I'm definitely going to choose that one.

#83 Posted by Superkenon (1506 posts) -

Personally my experience has been improved by the redesign, though I understand my use case doesn't speak for everyone. But you can use line breaks in lists now! LINE BREAKS!!

I think they did good though. "Better in some ways, worse but gonna get fixed in others," isn't such a bad state to be in after all these shenanigans.

#84 Edited by VierasTalo (939 posts) -

I'd love to find the forums on the mobile version. Guess my phone isn't compatible.

#85 Posted by Sooty (8082 posts) -

I still miss YouTube.

#86 Posted by two_socks (236 posts) -

Video problems are the biggest problem for me. I think the forums/comments stuff is done super well and I generally like the whole look of the site. Just the slow/choppy videos bug me.
