Hey all. The Whiskey Media engineering team continues to try and deliver on our promise of adding new features for our members on a fairly consistent basis. Last month saw the introduction of Video RSS feeds so that you could download videos directly through iTunes and yesterday Mike Horn (gpbmike) added a new HTML5 full screen player to our video arsenal.

Essentially, if you're a member you can now click the "Theater" link in the bottom right of any video to launch the new player. It plays fullscreen within the browser and automatically builds a list of the latest videos added to the site. On top of that, you can now also create your own playlist to queue up a custom list of videos for playback later. It's stored with your profile so don't worry about us losing your list if you disappear for a couple days or switch to a different computer.

Unfortunately, the new player only works in browsers that support the H.264 codec since that's what we use to compress our videos. For now that means only Safari and Chrome, but we should have IE9 support in there pretty soon as well. If you have any issues feel free to PM gpbmike and let him know what's up. We've got plenty of ideas for the player, but wanted to get this basic version out first before we moved into crazy territory.

If I haven't said it before, thank you for helping us keep these goofy web sites running. We appreciate the help and hope that we can continue providing you with stellar features, support, and hijinks for a long time. If you aren't a member, what are you waiting for? You can get in on that action before Friday's live show starts at 4PM.

Much more impressive in full screen!

Cool. Also, I hope no one complains about the browser support, as Chrome is all you need.

I switched from Firefox to Chrome about six months ago and am loving it. Rendering seems much faster. Also, it's programmed not to judge you as you surf the web, so that's nice.

Sweet, I'm a mamber now!

I'll have to mess around with this. Sadly my PC is an ancient piece of garbage and the theater basically murdered it the last time I poked at it.  I really should go read up some info at Tested and build myself a replacement.

Please don't forget Opera when you're adding browser support down the line! We're a small minority, but here nonetheless. Works great in Safari, though.

And before anyone says anything, I had every single browser on this computer before I settled on Opera. I have my reasons for not choosing Chrome or Firefox.

Thanks, Whiskey!

Still having problems with playlists (posted on the blog post about this the other day). Which takes my use out of it. But it still promises to be very awesome once all the small kinks are worked out.

What happens is when a video in the playlist ends it jumps to the first video in the list all the time, no matter what (even if that was the video that was last played).

They didn't support Firefox because they didn't feel like it. Read the post.

Great addition! This'll be even more awesome when I hook my laptop to my TV. :)

Great feature guys, thanks!

I subscribed solely to support you guys, so the lack of substantial membership perks never really bothered me, but it's always nice to see some useful new functionality being implemented in.

As far as I'm aware, Firefox 4 isn't going to have H.264 support. So no.

@animathias: Opera just needs to support H.264 in the <video> element of HTML5. There is a bit of infighting between browsers on which codec to support. I don't know where Opera falls on that. I know firefox is afraid of the consortium that controls H.264 charging a fee in some distant future, so they only support oggs offshoot video codec.

Unrelated to browser support: now I don't have to change my user agent to "iPad", or click the "download" link when I want to watch videos on the site anymore! Yaay

Then I don goof'd and the browser crashed.

Dave, have you guys ever thought about adding a page to the site for all the member only features? I spent forever the other day trying to remember what the link is to the video feeds. If there was a locked page on the WM site or in our profile or something where we could see these features it might help.

Nah, you should give it to everyone, not just subscribers. Tons of websites have a theater mode and playlists.
