Poll Subtitles Option > Which Menu? (162 votes)

Gamplay 10%
Audio 79%
Video 10%
Graphics 0%

When you are trying to turn on/off subtitles, in which Options sub menu would you expect it to be located? Let's try to standardize this.

Audio, obviously.

You're talking about how the audio is portrayed to the player. I can't imagine why it should be anywhere else.

Though, Gamplay -is- pretty funny. So... vote with your hearts.

Why any developer ever put in anywhere besides Audio is a fucking baffling mystery to me.

In the extras menu, hidden inside the concept art menu...but seriously I have no clue. Usually, I would say audio, but if graphics is listed as display instead, I usually check there first for some reason.

It should just be on by default, dammit. *glares at games that have a cutscene before the menu*

But seriously, audio.

On DVDs and Blu-Rays, Subtitles are standardized as being in Audio. Why do games have to change that up when so many are already used to it?

If it's about the Audio of the game, it should be in Audio.

You missed the Main Menu, where subtitles is just all by itself right next to things like Save, Settings and Video.

I know you want it in a slot, but it is by far my most used option. Honestly it should be a spoken command for both XB1 and PS4.

The mental conundrum between Sound (the talking/effects) and Display (the text) is just too big a hurdle to get past anyways.

Make it a toggle in cutscenes! Always liked that feature in Uncharted.

Audio is where I always expect it, but for some reason I feel like it ends up in Gameplay most of the time.

Sub-question: where is the weirdest place you've found the subtitle option?

Audio, because that what it's most directly associated with out of the list of menu options. I really wish devs would come to a consensus on it already.

I've gotten so used to finding it in Gameplay that I picked that over Audio. But honestly, they should just be in the main menu like @geraltitude suggests.

Hint: subtitles are visual things. You see them, you don't hear them.

Think about that.

I still wouldn't put them under "graphics" though, because they are not relevant to a game's graphics. It might be a little more confusing if there's a "display" option, but that's not as common as just "Graphics" and "Audio".

Wasn't there a game that gave Subtitles their own menu? That one was HELLA smart.

I expect it to be in the gameplay menu because that is where I usually find it. However, it should be in the audio menu or just on the main menu like @geraltitude said.

An individual subtitle option on the root menu, and an additional toggle on each sub-menu. It's the only way to be sure.

I think it belongs in audio, since it's in regards to the audio of the game. However, I find that it's very often under Display where that's an option.

Audio, but I understand why they put it in Display since it is something that appears on the screen. Also, I hate subtitles.

I think both Microsoft and Sony missed a big opportunity to make a dedicated Subtitles button on their controllers this gen. Instead we got shit like "Menu", "View" and "Share".

You enable subtitles by entering in a code while the company logo is showing. LT, LT, RT, RT, O, O, X, START for The Last of Us. It's different for every game.

Rebind the facebuttons to toggle subtitles for every game. You don't use those anyways.

I, personally, would say Video simply because you see the subtitles, you don't hear them. It's part of the picture that you see of the game. Audio should just be there to adjust different audio-related things (master volume, music, sound effects, dialog, etc...)

I can see the reasoning behind each.

  • AUDIO - Subtitles are the visual representation of the audio, so it makes sense to put in here. DVDs and Blu-Rays usually lump audio stream & subtitles into the same menu. If a game has a slider for 'Dialog Volume', then definitely in here.
  • VIDEO / DISPLAY- Subtitles are visual, and are displayed on the screen, so it also makes sense to go here. Video usually holds such things as brightness & safe frame adjustment. Possibly subtitles. I think of Graphics is typically a sub menu of Video for the nitty gritty settings like resolution, AA, texture resolution, shadow resolution, etc...
    • Sub note - What makes more sense as a menu title - Video or Display?
  • GAMEPLAY - Sometimes holds things like being able to turn on/off HUD elements so it could go here as well. Could act as sort of a 'default' if it doesn't belong in either of the other 2.

Thanks for the comments and voting! This is a great help

Audio menus are desperately short on options as it is so it may as well go there to fill the space up.

Maybe there needs to be another section for accessibility options where you could put subtitles and colour blind modes.

Has any game ever done anything like subtitles for sound effects? In my head I'm picturing something like a Thief game where the word "footsteps" would move along the bottom of the screen to give positional information such as you would get with stereo sound.

I'd like all games to have a menu just for subtitles called Subtitles. That would makes things a lot easier.
