What are some of your favorite Survival Horror games?

#2 Posted by Bucketdeth (7938 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago

Dead Rising was pretty cool, but I'm sure Dead Rising 2 will be even better and fix those annoying problems like the save feature.
I think my all time favorite would have to be Resident Evil 3, that was great.

the suffering, dead space, and both condemned are great.  I also love resident evil 4 of all time probably dead space

edit: oh yeah eternal darkness for the gamecube is really high up there for me.

@Bucketdeth: I still think they need to Remake those old classic resident evil games. I miss my true RE.
#5 Posted by pornstorestiffi (4851 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago

The best of the newer ones i have played is definitely Dead Space. I did enjoy Resident Evil 5, but i cant get my self to actually call that survival horror.

Some of my favorite older ones includes, Resident evil 1,2,3, Code Veronica, Zero, and the remake of Resident Evil 1 on the Gamecube. And lets not forget Silent Hill 2, had a fun time with that one.

Also worth mentioning are Siren Blood Curse and The Haunted on XBOX was pretty damn cool too.

I agree man, I'm one of the few who didn't like RE4/5 I want my god damn tank moving characters and creepy atmosphere, not a action game made for kids with A.D.D.

Well, the newer term of survival horror is used loosely, but I would consider Resident Evil 4, Dead Space and Condemned 2 to be on my favorites. Still, the original survival horror games (which are more frustrating now to this day) are the "true survival horror" titles, but whatever, this argument is stale anyway. The original Resident Evil's, and Silent Hill 2 are my favorite games from this genre. Perhaps Manhunt, if that counts as well?

DUDE yuss! I love RE4 and 5 for what they are, but i despise them for what they did to my beloved series. i'm so relieved to see Silent Hill: Shattered Memories going for the more classic SH vibes. The series was totally going down that western road and i was fucking pissed.

Damn i forgot Re4, how is that possible.

As RHCblahblah said before, it depends on your definition of survival horror. Loosely defined, I'd say BioShock, but a stricter definition would yield the original Silent Hill.

This.

Also anyone who says things like The Suffering, Condemned, Resi 4/5, etcetc needs to GTFO of this thread, those are action games, FPS's etc etc.

Honestly, I fucking loved Resident Evil 4 it's one of the best action games ever made, but it is that and that alone, an action game. I also will never, EVER forgive it for fundamentally changing the Resident Evil franchise forever, and in my opinion, obliterating what was already a weak plotline, now we have bullshit like what i'm reading about in Resi 5? Fuck that, I don't like the way things have turned out one single bit.

Even stuff like Dead Space barely qualifies as survival horror, it's only barely justifiable the choices it makes and I honestly still consider it the large majority action game, there is little focus on puzzle solving or simple survival, ammo is everywhere and only on the very first playthrough are you ever in need of sometimes running away from your enemies instead of simply decimating them all. Even then, if you're in the least bit competant, you can total everything in the game, in my humble opinion survival horror games shouldnt even give you the option of fighting everything in the game, you should be forced to turn tail and run at least once, and should subsequently be awarded for avoiding confrontation (IE you save the ammo for bosses) whereas games like Dead Space, Resi 4 and 5 make that impossible (Especially Resi 5) by just throwing millions of enemies at you and locking all the doors until everyones dead. That's not survival horror, that action no matter which way you cut it.

My favorite Survival Horror is and always will be Resident Evil 2. But there are some underappreciated classics in the genre like all 3 Project Zero/Fatal Frame games, Siren (all of them) Silent Hill 4: The Room (The only game in the series I truly enjoyed) any of the original Alone in the Dark games (IE not The New Nightmare, or the one Atari put out recently) and the Clock Tower series, including number 3.

@pornstorestiffi: Im really hopeful the new Silent Hill will be decent

@Akeldama:

I can vouch for the guys making it, i've met some of them in person and they are incredibly passionate about it, and from what i've seen in previews it looks absolutely stunning, potentially the rebirth of survival horror (from what I gather, you rarely even get access to weapons and are forced to run from enemies almost all the time, and a major focus on puzzle solving)

I'm not too happy it's on the Wii though, but i'll get over that.
#16 Posted by Akeldama (4130 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago
@The_A_Drain: while i completely agree with everything you said, i want you to elaborate on your comment about silent hill 4 and the series. Silent hill 4 is regarded as the first game in the series to disappoint fans. I personally loved it but what makes it your favorite over say silent hill 2 (my personal favorite in the series)?
#17 Posted by Akeldama (4130 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago
@The_A_Drain: thats really good to hear. I refuse to be let down again by such an amazing series. Im actually pretty happy its on the wii. Brad says the controls work perfectly and the prospect of using the wii mote as a doom 3 era flash light entices me

@Akeldama:

Mostly the horror, I felt it did a really good job of that, and the premise was so unique it actually kept me engaged right up to the terrible end portion of the game. I could care less what Silent Hill fans thought of it because i'm not one of them, I played the original Silent Hill and loved it, I regarded (and still do) 2 and 3 as "More of the same, nothing to see here" and had to even force myself to finish them because I was getting bored with them. The Room brought along a totally new concept, one that excited me quite a lot and refreshed the franchise for me, pity Homecoming was rubbish.

I really never did understand what people thought was so special about Silent Hill 2. I'm not gonna bash them for it, I just really don't understand it at all.
#19 Posted by Akeldama (4130 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago
@The_A_Drain: i can totally see where you are coming from. Silent Hill 2 is my favorite because it set a benchmark in gaming for excellent and unmatched depth of story and atmosphere. Loved 4 as well

I'm surprised I'm the first person to mention Penumbra.

Because few things are more terrifying than zombies with dicks.

Ahh yeah I forgot about that one, stupidly as i've been playing it recently.

I gotta say, it's fucking scary. Really good puzzles too.

@JeffGoldblum: not interested in a wii-make of a remake

im looking for a PS3 resident evil 2
#25 Edited by The_A_Drain (3910 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago
@Akeldama:

I honestly don't want a remake of any the other Resi games. Lightning never strikes twice and all that. I want a new one made with tank controls, or at least an updated form of those controls.

Fortunately, we have had capcoms word that Resident Evil 5 will be "The last of it's kind" now, while that can mean anything, I have my fingers crossed it means we are going back to tank controls, I could care less if the mainstream players dont like them, they should stop trying to play Survival horror games imo, they are clearly wanting a different product, one more action oriented.
#26 Posted by Akeldama (4130 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago
@The_A_Drain: i heard the same thing. I guess RE6 will be a complete reboot for the series. But i can see this trend only getting worse for us and better for capcom. As for the remakes, if they did the same thing they did with RE 1 on the gamecube, that would sell huge.
#27 Posted by The_A_Drain (3910 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago
@Akeldama:

The REmake was fucking awesome, but no, it did not sell that well at all compared to other entries in the franchise, and especially compared to 4.

Resi 0 and Resi Remake, sold 1.3 and 1.42 million copies respectively. Put that next to the 5million+ the original Resident evil sold on Playstation alone (Resi 2 sold even more), and the 1.7 million (GC) and 2.93 million (PS2) Resi 4 sold, with another 1.5 mill on the Wii.
#28 Posted by Akeldama (4130 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago
@The_A_Drain: hell. At least ill always have the original REs, SHs, and fatal frame games. Sigh...
#29 Posted by The_A_Drain (3910 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago
@Akeldama:  Yeah :(

Not like we're even getting Fatal Frame 4, fucking, the one time i've seen a business decision by Nintendo and not seen the sense in it. Utterly outraged by that decision, and given Nintendo has the rights for the west it's unlikely anyone will be able to wrangle it off of them in order to publish. Seemed like a strange decision what with Dead Space: Extraction, Silent Hill remake, 4 resi games and a The Grudge game on the console.

Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 2. Not many other games comes close. In my opinion there hasn't been a good or true surival horror game in a long time.

#31 Posted by TheEnd (87 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago

Resident Evil 2, 1, and 3. All in order

Dead Space...well..does this count as Survival Horror or an action game?!

Silent Hill 2, 1. In order

Dead Rising was never anything near survival horror.

Why dont people know what the definition of survival horror is? Just because its a horror game does not mean its survival horror.

Survival horror means youre in a game that gives you very limited resources in which you have to make tough decisions how to survive, with a horror theme. In otherwords, youll get 10 bullets to fight 50 enemies when each of them take about 7 hits to die.

Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising, Resident Evil 4/5, BioShock etc are NOT survival horror.
