Terrible Unlockables

#1 Edited by Im_Your_God_Now (2 posts) - 2 months, 7 days ago

I just completed Tomb Raider and got all of the collectables. I immediately became very upset to know that all you earn for your troubles is just concept art and character models. Concept art (or fan art in other cases) has been my most hated unlockables. It's just a lazy excuse for the developer to use instead giving you something of real value. It's like the old 8-bit games with shitty endings, a black screen with text is all you get at the end - all this build up for nothing.

The game that's on my top ten list of games with the most shitty unlockables is the Dreamcast version Sonic Adventure were you earn absolutely nothing for collecting all the emblems.

Let's start a petition.

Edit: They don't owe us anything for collecting stuff.

You're right. Tomb Raider totally needs an unlockable "Nude Mode."

Agreed. Lack of skins and and any other special modes or weapons was annoying. I don't know what the appeal is in seeing the character models. Anyway, it isn't as bad as Uncharted 3's unlockables. Oh wait, there aren't any.

Oh I'm sorry, I must of not read the part where it states that I'm not allowed to have my own opinion.

It's a childish one if you really became upset at the revelation of what Tomb Raider's unlockables are.

DLC killed unlockables, sad but true

That type of behavior usually comes from obsessive fanboys. There's no such thing as perfect, and there's always room for valid criticism. And at least I can get upset over something legitimate unlike you.

The most irritating case has to be Capcom's games. in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 all you get is concept art while you end up finding put that a bunch of content is locked on the disc.

new title screens and what makes them so bad is they're usually the final reward.

The new Perfect Dark (N64) title screen you get for finishing the game is pretty rad. Though that game has tons of content after that still.

It's legitimate to become upset over unlockables in a video game? OK, then...

This is something that has been going on for a long time. They seem to feel they need to reward you for collecting stuff and all they have aside from achievements is concept art.

No reason to get all uptight about it. It is not like they can give you money or anything. What exactly did you expect in return? I mean you got a lot of logs to read and some random history fact (Not sure how true they are)

As for the "Old 8-bit games" Comment...What do you expect Full CG stuff when that stuff did not even exist? Do you want someone to send you a medal? Some games did that if you took a picture of your high score.

Anyone remember what you got for 100%ing GTA3 (or Bully)?

Nothing. Nada. Bupkis.

My opinion on that: Meh. M-E-H.

...though I can see where this might be the most annoying ever since the ambulance missions in GTA3 were nigh impossible...

@oldguy: That's not a great example since OP is taking about collectibles that don't unlock anything worthwhile. Going through the troubles of finding the collectibles in the PS2 GTA games gave you unlimited weapons and armor at your safehouses. That's worthwhile to me. Paramedics and Police challenges when completed gave you additional health and armor too.

It's a video game....NOTHING in it has a 'real value' and no reward is 'real'. Which is why running around getting collectables is stupid in any game. All the people who got the golden super macho chocobo in Final Fantasy VII? Big deal, I still beat the game and I didn't waste more of my life doing it.

Remember when PS3 didn't have trophies, so collecting all the flags in the PS3 version of Assassins Creed 1 did absolutely nothing. It's especially aggravating towards us completionists who don't like leaving games without absolutely everything taken care of. Grinds my gears yo.

Yeah the unlockables in Tomb Raider are pretty week, who still actually cares for concept art. I would much rather something like weapon skin mods or further skill enhancements.

Play a Hideki Kamiya game. They still have unlockables. Sometimes they are even different characters with their own movesets. He knows whats up. Or maybe play a DS Castlevania. Plenty of reward there and you get other modes/ characters once you are done.
