I wasn't sure how to come about asking this question, because it's so...varied, opinion wise and what you'd call indie.

What I suppose I want to ask, is what people think are the best current indie games on the PC? I'd love free ones over paid, but I'm all ears really. Just looking for some great unknown gems really. I suppose the one I'd use to get the ball rolling is Dwarf Fortress

Cthulu Saves the World. It was 3 bucks on xbla and it's roughly the same cost on pc. Although the game is heavily humor based so it depends if you value game play over the tee hees.

Generally anything Humble Indie Bundle related.

Pay whatever you want and get 7 indie games or pay above the average price $5.82(right now) and get 12 indie games. Just do it!

Crimzon Clover might be the best "indie" game I've played (no others that even approach it in quality come to mind at the moment, at least). Great fun and was made by one person.

The Cat and the Coup and Digital: A Love Story are both free and IGF finalists if I remember correctly. I've downloaded them but haven't found the time to play them yet. Actually if you go to the IGF website you can find pretty much every game that has been submitted for the awards. Everyday The Same Dream is a GREAT flash game that should not be missed as well.

Super Mario Crossover!

Check out Sawbuck Gamer on the AV Club blog - a great (monthly?) feature about the best of indies, free browser games, etc

Um, well this is a vague question. I'll take current to mean released this year:

Fotonica
Proun
SpaceChem
Lume
Dungeons of Dredmor

Actually, here's a good place to look.

I strongly disagree. I got that game on sale for $5 and I still feel cheated.

Spelunky has been commanding a large amount of my time lately. And of course no thread like this can go with a mention of Cave Story, though I'm not sure that it can even be counted as indie anymore.

Revenge of the Titans.  Holy crap is that game addicting.  It's part of the Humble Indie bundle if you pay more than the average (It's totally worth it, you get Braid and Machinarium too).  I paid 20 bucks before they announced that you would get more games and I was pleasantly surprised that I would get more games so I installed everything.

Then I started playing Revenge of the Titans and lost a whole day's worth of time.  That game is insanely addicting.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is in my top five games of all time for sure, and it's free.

There are so many indie games on steam it's unreal. A good start is the humble bundle, get all those games and you'll be good for a while on VVVVVV alone.

Definitely VVVVVV - I prefer it over SMB. The soundtrack is amazing and surprisingly, I really liked the characters in it as well. :)

#18 Edited by Grumbel (910 posts) -

I'd go with VVVVVV as well. It's not the longest game (2:30h on a normal playthrough), nor the most complicated one nor the most imaginary one, but it's one that is fun from start to finish. Also Braid is pretty damn good. And I heard plenty of good things about Aquaria, but that seems to be a bit of a slow burner compared to the other two.

Here is one more that is not yet mentioned:

La Mulana, it is a freeware. There is also a Wiiware version coming which looks great. Out already in Japan

#20 Posted by BoG (5187 posts) -

Dwarf Fortress is really fun, but extremely complex. I'd suggest anything by Matt Thorson, like Jumper. Those games are pretty amazing. Also, look for a little game called Seiklus.

Definitely this, I just didn't think meat boy was fun.  However, the world is so much fun to traverse in VVVVVV and the music is the greatest thing ever!

I recently discovered this one after watching that dungeons of dredmor QL, which made me interested in trying a roguelike. Since then I have hardly played any other games, it's pretty much perfect. It's easy to get into but it just keeps on giving, I am still learning new stuff after atleast 30 hours of play.

Terraria and World of Goo are two of my favorites.  Bastion will be coming out soon and I hear that is great.  Even though I didn't really enjoy the demo, most people seem to love Limbo and it's out now on PC.

#31 Posted by Klei (1768 posts) -
@Ahmad_Metallic

What about Limbo? Oh yeah, it's 2.5 hours long, way overpriced, and I enver played it again except when I beat it on launch, a year ago.

Wow indeed.

There are so many great indie games like Braid, VVVVVV, Super Meat Boy, Terraria, Altitude, Audiosurf, and Osmos. However I still think the best of the best is World of Goo.

How're you playing? I know it's super nooby of me, but I'm still rockin' KoBe, and it's tons of fun.

World of Goo, Cave Story, and Amnesia are probably my favorite independent games.

Solar 2!!!!!

Interesting... no one has mentioned Bastion... Sure, it's not out till next week (and... it might be better played with a gameped)... but...

@takua108: Troll Berserker is pretty powerful.

@Everyone Else:

My top 5 Indie games are currently:

Dwarf Fortress
Space Station 13
Cogs
Cataclysm (not to be confused with the WoW expansion)
Mount and Blade: Warband

As you can tell, I prefer a sort of game that is more open-ended, and the Indie community really embraces that stuff. From the rich, deep experience of Dwarf Fortress, to the absolute chaos of SS13, to the only real Zombie Survival game out there in Cataclysm, and to Mount and Blade, which allows me to lead my troops on any campaign I like, these folks really embrace what it means to be indie. And three of the five are free!

Oh, and Cogs is just wonderful, beautiful puzzle fun.

nobody said minecraft. i think it's one that a lot of people play.

Amnesia - The Dark Descent.

The most scary game I've ever played.

So scary. I've yet to finish it.

Braid. That is all.

Heheh, my most succesfull runs are with a Beserker too, Mountain Dwarf for me. Mind you succesfull is relative, I believe I made it to level 13 a couple of times. I keep on dying somewhere in one of those extra dungeons, The Lair or the Swamp or Orc Caves because I get cocky.

The most fun I had was with a ghoul, having to eat rotten meat. My favorite class is probably the Transmuter, throwing potions at monster. The Ice Elementalist is pretty cool too.

Edit: oh,my favorite death was with a Beserker. I accidently drank a potion of degeneration and my intelligence dropped to 0. Reason of death: I forgot to breath :)

Regardless, Braid is one of my favourite games ever =D

Thought of another one. Desktop Dungeons. There is a freeware version and one more polished one that cost moneis.

Desktop Dungeons is a nice easily approachable dungeoncrawler with puzzle element

Digital: A Love Story and the creator's follow-up Don't Take It Personally Babe, It Just Ain't Your Story are wonderful, meant to slowly work my way through them and ended up finishing them both tonight in one sitting.  Tales of the Maj'Eyal is a great roguelike, this was the first of the genre for me and I found it relatively easy to get into. TypeHard is kind of weird, similar to Typing of the Dead. Octodad is... one of the those games you just have to play to figure it out. Tomorrow I'm planning on checking out Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer, heard some good things about it. All of these games are free and a few were student project, so don't expect a ton from the presentation, but all are unique and probably not like anything you've played before, for good or bad.

If you're looking for something a little more polished, Frozen Synapse is great, Giantbomb has a quick look they did a while ago. It's on Steam, their website and I'm sure other download outlets for $25, however this also includes a "free" copy you can gift to a friend.

Project Zomboid looks like it's gonna be a terrific game. I tried the public demo and was instantly convinced to buy it. It's only 5 pounds (around €7, $10) and you'll get all the updates and everything like in Minecraft.

I don't know what you mean by current but I will give you my list of favorites anyway, from "best" to "less good":

Nitronic Rush, Cave Story, Igneous, Super Crate Box, Solipskier, Jumper 1 2 & 3, Runman: Race around the world, Realm of the Mad God, Rescue the Beagles.

These are all free. For paid ones:

Dustforce, Super Meat Boy, BIT. TRIP RUNNER, FEZ, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, The Binding of Isaac, Braid, Thomas was Alone, Bastion, Limbo, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet (wich is a surprisingly good game, I don't know why no one ever mentions it), VVVVVV, Hotline Miami (even though I still have to play more of it), BIT. TRIP BEAT.

Please note that these are my personal favorites.
