Recently, I was required to develop a game as part of an interactive computer graphics course. I kept having ideas like "tetris on steroids" and "bejeweled meets ricochet", so I decided to hack together an automated system to generate thousands of such ideas. The result was ultimately completely unhelpful in relation to the project, but has given me a few good laughs with its ridiculous suggestions:

The multiplayer of Gears of War meets the art design of Mario Kart Wii.

The next generation of Golf.

The controls of Grand Theft Auto IV meets the characters of Nintendogs.

...that last one could get rather ugly. If you want, you can give it a shot for yourself:  http://oddfinch.com/gameideas/

Let me know if you find anything awry, but note that unfathomably terrible game ideas are a feature, not a bug.

You are awesome.

Wow! What a great idea. Im sending this in to Blizzard right now. But what to call it... hmm Warcraft's World, maybe...

Ok, 1 more....
"World of Warcraft meets The Witcher."
Ffffffuuuuuu...........

Portal, but actually fun.

Fuck you.
#7 Edited by Butano (1681 posts) -

Ok, this needs to be fixed pronto.
"Mass Effect 2, but without all the fancy multiplayer. "

"World of Warcraft online"
Wait, so WoW is offline?

#8 Posted by N7 (3570 posts) -

Okay, this was just too funny not to post.

The classic single-player of Super Mario Bros. combined with the gimmicks of Super Mario Bros. 2.

"Halo: Combat Evolved, but with the controls of Pokémon Silver."
 Clearly what it was missing.

And just for fun:

"E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, but without all the fancy graphics. "
#11 Posted by Icemael (6269 posts) -

If only Guild Wars had better multiplayer, it could be as big as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial!

#12 Posted by Skald (4366 posts) -

The MMO version of  Madden NFL 2005.

I've been waiting six years for that game.
#13 Edited by Driadon (2990 posts) -

"   The MMO version of  ESPN NFL 2K5."
 Hah!

"  Dragon Age: Origins, but with better storyline."
Oh SHI-

Edit: "  If only  World of Warcraft had better gameplay, it could be as big as Neverwinter Nights!"
I wish :(

Edit 2: "  Golf, but with the storyline of  The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages.
That cracked me up something fierce!

#14 Edited by FirePrince (1762 posts) -

" Team Fortress 2, but with better multiplayer."
"The next generation of Sonic the Hedgehog 3."
" E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial on steroids."
Last one always cracks me up.
#15 Posted by JJOR64 (18782 posts) -

The next generation of Luigi's Mansion.

I would buy that game in a heart beat.
#16 Posted by Slaker117 (4835 posts) -

StarCraft on steroids.

 StarCraft II, with updated graphics.

Finally, a remake of StarCraft II.

The Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare formula never gets old. More great controls!

Are you sure these aren't Activision Blizzard's design docs?

Also:

Angry Birds, but with better gameplay.

#17 Posted by Trebz (487 posts) -

The storyline of Gears of War 2 meets the multiplayer of NFL 2K1.

The pitch speaks for itself.
#18 Edited by Jeust (10334 posts) -

The Witcher for the whole family!

That would be fun! Then again... maybe not. :p

Unbelievably great single-player, inspired by  StarCraft II.

ZING! Your generator is awesome!

<3 This is awesome. It's like you created a program just to troll people :o

"Tetris, stripped down to its essence."
"Half-Life, but with the gameplay of Halo: Reach."
"The graphics of Diddy Kong Racing meets the controls of Donkey Kong 64."
"The MMO version of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening."
"Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare meets The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time."

Just out of interest, would it be possible to take game names from the Giant Bomb database?

#20 Posted by Buccura (213 posts) -

Great single-player and characters together in a modern Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Wut.

#21 Posted by Natedogg2 (438 posts) -

Team Fortress 2, but with single-player that even grandma can enjoy!

Ah, yes, just what TF2 needs.

Project Gotham Racing and Animal Crossing had a baby. It has great developers.

That seems fairly weird.

But this one takes the cake:

Wii Sports, but with multiplayer that even grandma can enjoy!

#22 Posted by Rudeboy217 (1760 posts) -

The MMO version of  Super Mario Sunshine.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

That was my initial thought when putting this together. I took a cursory glance at the API documentation and it appeared to be centered largely around querying for specific games/platforms/etc., meaning that generating a list of random games would be possible but not as simple as I had hoped. As a result, I just compiled a list of notable games (using a combination of GB's lists and Wikipedia's top-sellers by platform). I'll definitely look into GB API integration as a future improvement though!

 Nonono I got it:
"Madden NFL 2005, but with the art style of  Heavy Rain."

It would just be sad looking football players running around in grey/depressing environments and it would always be raining. Throw in the occasional QTE and a few Jasons and you would have the next big thing.

#25 Posted by TwoLines (2762 posts) -

"Fable II, but with the art style of Heavy Rain."

Uhuh... Keep talking...

#26 Posted by MaFoLu (1854 posts) -

"The classic graphics of  Sega Rally Championship combined with the multiplayer of  Paper Mario"
Yes, greatest idea ever!

"You asked for it:  Donkey Kong Country, reborn."
Come on, that would never happen...

#27 Posted by Andorski (5107 posts) -

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 meets  Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

A double complete game, across the consoles.

 YES!

Also:

Golf on steroids.

Just like in real life!

Mario Party 8 and  Metal Gear Solid had a baby. It has great storyline.

That sounds like one hell of a game.

If only Super Mario Bros. 2 had better multiplayer, it could be as big as Wii Fit Plus!

Ah yes, Wii Fit Plus, a game renowned for it's great multiplayer

The MMO version of  Bioshock.

This needs to happen. It would probably be terrible, but it's a tranwreck I want to see.

Fable II, but with the level design of Mario Kart: Super Circuit.

Fable kart racing. That sounds fun, right?

The classic art style of  The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask combined with the characters of  Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Yeah, Zelda needs a refresh, and the way to do that is to add the power rangers. It's so obvious!!!

Sonic the Hedgehog, but with the single-player of  Mortal Kombat 3.

Sonic in an ultra violent beat-em-up. YES!!!

The game mechanics of  Gran Turismo 5 meets the gimmicks of Gran Turismo.

Errm... OK...

StarCraft II, but without all the fancy graphics.

Isn't that just StarCraft?

I love this thing. It's the best thing since the Giant Bomb Forum Thread Generator

I felt like I was in a pitch meeting with someone that only heard of games and never played them:

"Crysis, but with better graphics."

"Finally, a remake of Mafia II."

"Unbelievably great storyline, inspired by Madden NFL 2005."

"Persona 4 meets Diablo."

Get out of here pitchman!...Wait, what was that last one?

#35 Posted by Damodar (1155 posts) -

NBA Jam, but actually fun.

Profound sadness...  :(

The love child of  Persona and Chrono Trigger.

Go on...

Modern Warfare 2, but with more multiplayer... wut?

Warcraft online
Street Fighter 2 online

errmm...

The classic level design of Madden NFL 06 combined with the game mechanics of Super Smash Bros..

This doesn't even make sense. I love it!

Madden did have pretty great level design though. It gets a bit samey towards the end-game though.

Oh, and

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, stripped down to its essence.

Sign me up baby.

Super Meat Boy Meets Rock Band

Huh.

NBA Jam, but with the multiplayer of Grand Theft Auto III.

I laughed.
#41 Edited by Pepsiman (2449 posts) -

"Luigi's Mansion, but actually fun." Boom! Done.

Edit: Not quite done! "Wii Sports, but without all the fancy storyline." The narrative quality was always the game's weakest point, especially as a pack-in title.

#42 Posted by Mento (2257 posts) -

"A new take on Street Fighter II."
Never work.

"Atlantis meets Animal Crossing: Wild World."
So, 'Animal Crossing: Wet World'?

"If only NBA Jam had better storyline, it could be as big as Diablo II!"
Hey, he really is on fire.

"Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, but without all the fancy characters."
Yeah, fuck Yoshi.

Ahahahahaha that's brilliant!

The next generation of  Minecraft.

I think I broke the world.

The art style of  E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial meets the storyline of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.

Just... Make it now. Please.

EDIT: Also, @thisisalan, thank you so much for including the "more graphics" reference, so funny.
#44 Edited by Robiin (292 posts) -

The only thing I didn't enjoy about Half-Life 2, was that it did nothing new to the genre... So I really want this.
Picture this: Half-Life 2, with revolutionary new single-player.

Also, I laughed at this..
Unbelievably great single-player, inspired by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

I always thought Super Mario Bros. was too complex:
Super Mario Bros., stripped down to its essence.

#45 Posted by Azteck (7447 posts) -

The classic art style of  Halo: Combat Evolved combined with the developers of  Ms. Pac-Man.

How can this not turn out fantastic?!

Finally, a remake of  Mass Effect 2.

Clearly, this is the treatment this game needs.

The gameplay of  Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas meets the multiplayer of  The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Majoras Mask apparently had a hidden multiplayer component, and it would be better if we could put a shotgun to the face of skullkid.
#46 Posted by Azteck (7447 posts) -

The classic single-player of Fable II combined with the level design of Venetian Blinds

CLEARLY THIS IS WHAT THE GAME NEEDS.
#47 Posted by Slaker117 (4835 posts) -
@Azteck:  I think it's pretty clear that any game would be improved with level design from Venetian Blinds.
#48 Posted by el_tajij (704 posts) -

Some of these are hilarious.

I got 'The graphics of Mortal Kombat II with the art style of Limbo' - Which sounds pretty badass!

That's a great one. And then Jason gets killed by a Linebacker.

my first result was "FFVII, Reborn." So many people would kill to make that true, especially after that PS3 tech demo years ago.

My second is "Classic level design of Civilization combined with the gimmicks of Donkey Kong Country." Ah yes. What Civilization was missing all along!
#50 Posted by oysteinBrenne (284 posts) -

Grand Theft Auto IV, but with the single-player of  Mario Party 4.Pitfall!, but with the gameplay of Missile Command.
Call of Duty 2: Big Red One and Dr. Mario had a baby. It has great art style.
The classic multiplayer of New Super Mario Bros. combined with the art design of God of War: Chains of Olympus.
The classic gameplay of Pitfall! combined with the multiplayer of Pokémon Red.
The graphics of ESPN NFL 2K5 meets the art style of Dead or Alive 3.
Left 4 Dead 2, but actually fun.    (true l4d2 was boring as fuck)
The love child of NFL 2K and Tomb Raider II.
The Sims and Pitfall! had a baby. It has great gameplay.
The art style of Soulcalibur meets the characters of Forza III.
