The Short News: Saints Row PSP, Bayonetta, Wipeout HD Fury

It's tha Row, son!
Is Saints Row coming to PSP? It most certainly is, if you believe the official site for Swedish metal band Opeth. Here's the update from the band's official site:

We may not like playing video games all that much but we do like it when our music is featured on them! Makes us a bit proud even when it's a game as big as Saints Row for the PSP and even prouder when the nice developer people show excellent taste by picking "The Lotus Eater" for it. So if you love playing video games: the game is expected to hit the streets around March 2010.

Hardly an officially official confirmation, obviously, but it's close enough for me. Actually, it's way more specific than the typical "band or voice actor says something about an announced game" scenario plays out. Normally you'd just get something like "we're in Saints Row" with no platform or anything. And hey, nothing says "keeping it gangsta in the streets of Stilwater" like Swedish metal?

Do you ever get the feeling that this holiday season is going to be a real bummer? Here's another delay for you.

Sega has officially pushed the release of Bayonetta to January 2010 this morning. That date applies to both North America and Europe. Japan will still get the game this year... October 29, to be exact. Interestingly, the reason given by Sega has nothing to do with needing more time to develop the game. Here's part of the statement that Destructoid ran:

“Bayonetta is an extremely important new IP for SEGA and adds a new level of depth to our growing portfolio. As a result of market analysis we have taken a Publishing decision that January 2010 is the optimum release time in the Western Markets to maximize this exciting new title's potential,” said Mike Hayes, President and COO for SEGA West.

Certainly not the first time that a game's been pushed out of the holidays to give it a better chance of success, but normally publishers don't specifically cite that as a reason.

In other news involving dates, the Wipeout HD expansion pack, called Wipeout HD Fury, will be out on July 23 for $9.99. Three race types, 13 new ships, 12 tracks, new trophies, and even additional music will be included. Sounds like a monster upgrade to an already great game. And if you're into expanding PlayStation 3 games, July 23 is also the day for the third Killzone 2 pack, Napalm & Cordite. This adds two maps which will contain two new (well, new to multiplayer, anyway) weapons: the flamethrower and the boltgun.

Yesterday was the day for NPD to release its sales figures and the 360 version of Prototype took the top spot, followed by the 360 version of UFC 2009 Undisputed. As Variety's Chris Morris noted, this is also the first time in 29 months that Wii Play hasn't appeared in the top ten.

And closing out today's wrap-up is word that Midway has give a 60-day notice to all 60 of the people at its corporate office in Chicago. This is everyone at the executive level, including the company's CEO, Matt Booty. The 100 people on the studio side of Midway's Chicago operation--which includes the Mortal Kombat team--have all been given offers to continue their job for the new owners, Warner Bros.. Looks like the company is still looking for a buyer for the Midway San Diego operation, where TNA Impact! 2 is/was in development.

Oh, one more thing! If you're looking to catch some fighting action this weekend, Evo 2009 is going down this weekend. Check the tournament's live page for a streaming schedule.

I'd get wipeout on my PS3 but it won't accept my debit card. It keeps saying the information isn't correct when it is. They even do that authorized hold thing on it but still say the info is wrong.

So Sega doesn't want Bayonetta to get buried under Modern Warfare 2. Understandable, but still disappointing. Hey, still looking forward to it!

Not surprised that they don't like playing video games. It seems anyone older than the pokemon-generation have never played a video game in Sweden =( I know when I grew up only the nerds (like me) played video games.

I want a wipeout port to 360, they did with n64 like 10 years ago

I'm kind of glad Jeff done his homework on Opeth. That is if he isn't a fan.

I enjoy Sega's transparency.

I'm said that Bayonetta got delayed.  I think the game looks awesome.

#9 Posted by Delsaber (182 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago

A little more Wipeout is never a bad thing.

Bayonetta being pushed back doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I get the impression from all that I've read that Kamiya and his team have been working obsessively on the inner workings of the game, making sure all the gameplay is as tight and as fresh as it can be. Those dudes are in no rush at all to push that out. Platinum Games know they have to deliver after MadWorld.

The game already looks stunning, a breakthrough in the game engine department on 360, I can happily wait as long as it takes, you just know that game is going to be awesome.

Hell yes Saint's Row PSP. I've logged close to 80 hours on SR2... Truly the San Andreas of the current generation.

Who wouldnt believe Opeth. Mikal Akerfeltd, their lead singer did lie to the audience when I saw them live though...

I gotta remember to pick up Wipeout HD for $15 this week

#15 Posted by VoshiNova (1262 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago

Sony's plan to forever make the PSP worthless has now changed, with a cliche port of yet another open-world-crime game.

Is anyone really playing their pussssp anymore?

I get all my Video Game news from Swedish metal band websites.

Oh yea, the Killzone maps don't hurt either :)

Sad to see Bayonetta get delayed, but I'm not complaining. I can see where they're coming from, and knowing the folks at Platinum Games and their track record in the genre I'm sure it'll be worth the wait in the end.

It will be very interesting to see how Bayonetta's sales compare to those of Devil May Cry 4 which came out in February 2008.

#21 Posted by Media_Master (3283 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago

killzone maps and wipeout expansion are good news

#22 Posted by Nets (318 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago

Bayonetta deserved the delay. It seems Modern Warfare 2 is scaring away the competition. First Heavy Rain, Singularity, Bioshock 2, MAG, and now this (I know I'm probably missing some). Of course, they all weren't delayed solely because of Modern Warfare 2, but you got to think that publishers are scared that their games won't get the deserved sales during the most busiest quarter of the year.

Haha, Opeth in a Saints Row game? o_O That was unexpected.

#24 Posted by Gnorbooth (232 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago

Well they already did have Opeth in Saints Rows 2, and they picked a damned amazing song.  Props to Opeth for getting the rumor mill going, easily one of the best bands on the planet right now.  Not to mention, The Lotus Eater is CLASS!

Jeff, if Opeth says it's the truth...then it's the muthafuckin' truth, son!!!

#26 Posted by Ineedaname (4319 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago

Bayoneta was hardly in my top games to buy ever if I'm honest.

#27 Posted by DannyJ (445 posts) - 3 years, 10 months ago

Saints Row 2 had some pretty brutal death metal in it. It surprised me that they had it in there, and that it was all mostly great songs too.

I am definItely on board for Wipeout Fury.  Wipeout HD is probably the PSN game I put the most time into (even though I'm rubbish at it XP).

It's about time. Probably not coming to the DS though. :)

Dude, this article is over two years old. There may have been a Saints Row PSP game at one point, but it was obviously scrapped.

Someone give me a shotgun, we got a necro.

@mariokart64fan: Ya, kid. You tell that 2 year old article about rumors who's boss. =)

Or maybe Swedish bands are not very trustful news outlets. I say we get Patrick on the case!

saints row is not on psp
