I guess that Microsoft was hit with that little-known First & Third Console Curse. Which isn't as bad as Sega, who were really unlucky to invoke the First Through Third, Fifth, Sixth And Also A Shitty Handheld Console Curse.

I love how a lot of the "proof" in the top post is actually the opposite of proof if you actually take the time think.

The biggest mistake is leaving out the Gameboy Color, which would make the DS the third in the next cycle of three. Remind me, did the DS do anything that could even remotely be considered failing or "stumbling"?

Then we have Sega. Their first two consoles were pretty much completely unknown, the Master System (#3) was their most successful console when it came out. Then we have their second number 3, the Dreamcast, which was a failure, but it did better than the console that preceded it, so how does that work as part of this theory?

The N64 certainly didn't do as well as the Super NES, or its competition (The PS1), but it was much more successful than its successor (the Gamecube), so rule of 4 just this once?

So no, definitely not confirmed. Stop trying to find a pattern where there isn't one.

@colourful_hippie: Well there are at-least some decent games on the Vita but unfortunately most of them are in Japan. And the good ones are probably only going to be there, still its a problem that there are only some people in Japan that has a Vita and less in the western world.

Sony - Okay that one works

Microsoft - No way to tell yet but not proven wrong yet.

Nintendo (Handheld) - Well speaking that the Game and Watch were a series of handhelds not a single device, and the Gameboy Color is left out entirely, I can't say that works at all.

Nintendo (Handheld 2) - The 3DS stumbled no more than the DS did in its early days. Both had tough first years before a bunch of Mario games saved them. So I guess the third did stumble, but so did the second.

Nintendo (Console) - Okay I guess that works but the Gamecube was no more successful than the N64

Nintendo (Console 2) - Again, that works but you are ignoring how big of a failure the Gamecube was.

Sega (Console) - Assuming you are counting these as three full consoles, then the Sega Master System was by far the most successful of the bunch so not confirmed at all.

Sega (Console 2) - The third did stumble, but so did the second so what is your point?

2600/CVS, 5200, 7800 - Well two and three were failures but three was especially in this case. But it was the Jaguar that truly destroyed the company so I guess it's pretty much 2,3, and 4 in this case. You could arguably count Pong as their first console, at which point your theory would be slightly more accurate.

3DS didn't light the world on fire at first no but it's doing just fucking fine now thanks. People forget this but it took the DS a little while to shine as well.

There is no console curse you guys. Its a myth. That Madden curse is fucking real, though.

It's not so much because it's the 3rd console, but rather because after two really successful consoles in a row companies think they can get away with anything and pull something super shaddy. Then the people give them the middle finger.

The post isn't that the consoles were bad. The n64/dreamcast both had some amazing classics. But lets face it people. They had issues, and didn't sell like they should have. Nintendo still stuck in the past with small carts with the 64, which vastly limited what could be done on it. The ps2 beat the dreamcast down. The ps2 was THE dvd player for many people. Now sega just produces software. Playstation 3 of course, sony got a bit greedy. The XBone still requires an internet connection, at least once.

None were failures really. But they just didn't perform as they might have liked.

PSP - PSP Go - Vita

PSP Go was a massive failure compared to the Vita. Vita might not be doing so well now but something tells me that with momentum on Sony's side, we might see a resurgence around the time before or after the launch of the PS4.

There's something special about this place. The forum, it... it does something to the threads created here. It makes them come true. But there's a catch. The dark presence, whatever that thing is, twists it to its own ends. That's why all of this is happening. It's using our posts to take over everything.

Ha. Seriously to even suggest that the 3DS has been unsuccessful is silly. It's a fantastic handheld with some really, really awesome games.

Most of those Nintendo consoles failed wayyyy before the third iteration. Regardless, I've seen the chart of consoles detailing this and it is all based on sales.
