http://www.spike.com/vgx/game-of-the-year

The Game of the Year nominees are nothing too shocking, outside of Tomb Raider but the one that really caught my attention was "Best PC Game."

  • Battlefield 4
  • Gone Home
  • Papers, Please
  • The Stanley Parable

Now, Spike could very well just give it to Battlefield would be pretty boring but how nuts would it be to see one of those other three games win an award on national television? And one of them probably will win something because all three are nominated for Best Independent Game. Some major props are in order for the Doritos Pope himself.

Some other notable nominees:

  • The Fullbright Company for Studio of the Year
  • Divekick for Best Fighting Game
  • Brothers for Best Xbox Game
  • Metro: Last Light for Best Shooter
  • Two nominations for Ni Nu Kuni (Best RPG & Best Soundtrack)
  • Kentucky Route Zero for Best Independent Game
  • Tearaway for Best Handheld Game

There's still some weird shit like Rayman: Legends being nominated for "Best Nintendo Game" (what), Animal Crossing nominated for "Best Casual Game" (I see what they're saying but there's probably a better way to say it) and that Eminem song being nominated for "Best Song in a Game" (lol).

But I think some credit where credit is due for Keighley and the VGXs. They're really trying and I think that's pretty awesome.

@milkman: I think Geoff gets way to much shit. I think if Geoff had personal control over everything the show would be much different. And I do think he fights to make a show that core gamers are cool with but of course he has to fight the powers that be at Spike who don't fucking understand anything about what actual real gamers want to see. I applaud Geoff's efforts over the year to make each year better.

Rayman legends was meant to be a wii u exclusive right? Maybe they didnt get the memo.

If Gone Home wins best "anything game" I will fucking be pissed. It's a SHITTY Game, Great Interactive Story but it is a horrible game.

"and that Eminem song being nominated for "Best Song in a Game" (lol)."

Even when VGX gets so much right, they have to go fuck up like that. But it's all good, even if I of course disagree with some of the nominees, there's a lot to applaud here. And COD isn't nominated as best game!

Is Jeff still a judge at the awards?

edit: Yes he is.

#6 Posted by Milkman (16810 posts) -

@demoskinos: I definitely agree. Keighley has always come off a super genuine dude to me and he really does care about games. I'm not sure if there's anyone out there that could be doing a better job with these awards under the circumstances. That being said, that Doritos Pope picture is still hilarious.

@pocky4th3win: the walking dead won several goty awards and thats only slightly more of a game then gone home

@pocky4th3win:

Games are effectively "Interactive Entertainment" at this point.

#9 Edited by AMyggen (3076 posts) -

@demoskinos: The GB crew made that exact point some time ago. I think it might've been in regards to when they discussed the state of games journalism, with "Doritosgate" as one of the subjects? Jeff should know, he's been a judge at the awards for some time now, and they seem to have a good working relationship with Keighley. I think Keighley for the most part is fighting the good fight, and is doing a lot of good for this industry. He seems like a good dude. But even if the whole Doritosgate situation was blown way out of proportion, he still deserved some of the shit he got for that one.

Last years VGAs wasn't the usual shit show, so hopefully this keeps going in that direction.

Walking Dead has FAR more gameplay than Gone Home to even compare the two is an insult to Telltales as a developer. Gone Home is not even an adventure game because there are no puzzles, no objectives other then going from one point to another and the game even tells you what point to go to so you don't even figure that out. I wont argue that its a good story, I enjoyed the story but it's a horrible game in any sense of the term.

It was surprisingly alright last year. However the extra hour leads me to believe their will be a lot of awful padding

I really enjoyed Tomb Raider so I went with that.

also, WHY THE FUCK ISN'T SAINT'S ROW 4 ON THE LIST?

#17 Edited by Dallas_Raines (2161 posts) -

This is a far cry from the bad old days of the early VGAs, where they just handed awards out to porn stars and shit comedians. It's now clear that last year marked the shift to a more mature show.

The Voice Actress category is pretty damn cut-throat. All of those ladies did wonderful jobs.

Man, calling Blood Dragon DLC is kinda harsh. It's pretty much its own game.

Also where the fuck is SMTIV? I don't see it, Doritos King!

Tomb Raider is a pretty good game guys. If it wins I won't be mad at all.

#23 Posted by Flacracker (1674 posts) -

So I guess Super Mario 3D world is good? It has a GOTY nomination and everything. Are there even any reviews out for it yet?

#24 Posted by JJOR64 (18995 posts) -

GTA5 GOTY. Calling it now.

#26 Posted by Deranged (1837 posts) -

The list for best soundtracks is fucking terrible.

#27 Edited by DonChipotle (2763 posts) -

Why isn't Remember Me up for best soundtrack? That game had a fucking fantastic soundtrack.

Also I voted for Tomb Raider for GOTY because out of the nominees it is the best game.

@pocky4th3win: I think you're getting too caught up in semantics here. I wouldn't give Gone Home PC game of the year either, but it's still a game. Although (overly?) simplified it did have puzzles and rewarded your exploration with additional details about the story. I liked it. All that said, I feel like Spike is trying too hard here for some kind of indie cred with these PC nominations. Where's Rogue Legacy? Where's Card Hunter? Don't Starve? How about Heart of the Swarm? There are better options out there.

#29 Posted by Ares42 (2675 posts) -

I dunno if it's just been a sad year of gaming for me or those are horrible picks, but it can't be a good sign that I didn't want to vote for any of the games in over half of the categories as I felt none of them deserved the award.

Spike Video Game Awards, continuing it's tradition of maybe getting kind of slightly better each year maybe?

Jesus tell me about it, that was a tough one. Not to say any of them were slackers but I found the male Voices a lot easier to pick then the female ones.

#31 Posted by cloudnineboya (822 posts) -

picked tomb raider as the only other game i have played in that list was bioshock, so go lara it's your birthday.

#32 Edited by Dallas_Raines (2161 posts) -

Next year it will just be all Troy Baker for male voice.

#33 Posted by DonChipotle (2763 posts) -

Does anyone else find it odd that Troy Baker gets to be up for best voice actor twice?

#34 Edited by Optix12 (615 posts) -

If "Will the circle be unbroken" doesn't win best song in a game I will be really disappointed. That moment has possibly been one of my favourite scenes from this whole year easily

#35 Posted by DonutFever (3551 posts) -

I remember having so much more respect for them after 2011, because they had Ghost Trick as one of the nominees for Best Portable Game or something. That's more advertising than Capcom ever put out for it.

#36 Edited by cloudymusic (1118 posts) -

I still have no idea how these nominations lists are concocted. Like last year, games that aren't even out yet have already been nominated for GOTY. And while I liked Tomb Raider, how does that really deserve a spot on the overall GOTY list?

The inclusion of so many indie games is really great, and I will commend them for that.

#37 Posted by Subjugation (4720 posts) -

I gave Tomb Raider some love because man, that was a pretty good game.

Cause Tomb Raider was real good, yo. (And also better than the other games on that list imo)

How long until we start referring to indie games as 'VGX bait'?

#40 Posted by SASnake (339 posts) -

I really enjoyed Tomb Raider so I went with that.

also, WHY THE FUCK ISN'T SAINT'S ROW 4 ON THE LIST?

Because Saints Row 4 is an extremely shitty game that was overhyped by the Giantbomb community.

I'm surprised he didn't take up all of the slots. Fit in the rest with his performance as The Joker and... The Boss, or whatever. Was nice to see Steve Ogg get his props, though. Guy deserves all the recognition he can get!

After seeing Super Mario 3d world make the nomination list, I had a scary thought... What if that won GB's game of the year... That would just be sad......

#43 Edited by Abendlaender (2807 posts) -

The VGAs are kinda like a bad movie for me. I complain about everything they do, yet still enjoy it and would watch it again. Some intersting choices this year, though probably nothing interesting is going to win.

#44 Edited by Brodehouse (9952 posts) -

I was having a brief disconnection with reality when I opened the thread and thought the Gone Home, Stanley Parable and Papers, Please were up for Spike's GOTY. I was considering that I had astrally projected into an alternate dimension in which the laws of causality had been thrown aside.

That Gone Home got a nomination for game of the year is ... a little conspicuous. There is virtually no gameplay there, so that can't be why it's on this list, and the story itself is not even story of the year. It's not even Storytelling of the year. It seems entirely based on the content the game deals with rather than any sort of judgement on quality.

about 20 times in the past 3 decades, yes

#49 Posted by Brodehouse (9952 posts) -

I think it stands for X, because there actually aren't any Video Game Awards, there's just awards for video games that will be handed out at VGX.

#50 Posted by triviaman09 (802 posts) -

As somebody who watches the Oscars every year (yes, I'm that guy and yes I'm probably the only one), I still just can't get with the VGAs no matter how impressive the list of nominees. No other awards show is as lousy with sponsorship and generally embarrassing bullshit. Things like the VGAs are why I'm sometimes embarrassed to tell people that I'm into video games.

There has to be some kind of balance you can strike between the admittedly pretty boring austerity of the Oscars and teabagging somebody onstage.
