I thought it might be fun if we all worked together and cobble together a a list of our favorite video game songs from the past year.  The songs that we thought were the best or that will stick with us the most.  I guess I'll start things off with a Deadly Premonition trifecta:

First off, the Greenvale Theme, which I just found haunting:

Next up, everyone's favorite whistling tune, Life is Beautiful.  This song in particular seemed to grow on Giant Bomb like a particularly delicious form of fungus:

And a tune that's a little more rocking, and that stood out from the rest of the soundtrack to me:  George Woodman's Theme:

Next up, moving on to the opening theme to P3P.  The opening movie for that game was particularly poignant, I think, in the way it highlighted the sort of dual realities that the game presents:

And before this post gets too long, I present to you the end credits theme to Metroid:  Other M, which I thought fit the mood perfectly:

So what are some of your picks for the past year?

Did VVVVV come out this year? cause I'd go with that. Also, I love the whistle theme from DP!

Life is Beautiful from Deadly Premonition wins song of the year (barely beating Bayonetta) but Super Meat Boy is soundtrack of the year.

I'll pick one from each 2010 game I've played this year that's actually had a soundtrack of note:

@Dalai:

Second for SoulEye's VVVVVV, though I'd quote a different favorite:

I've replayed the tower a few times just to hear that tune.

EDIT:  Also, this:

One of the ending's tenser moments, and the music really made it stand out for me.

I didn't play a whole bunch, but Super Meat Boy takes it for me. Red Dead Redemption also had some really strong moments on account of its soundtrack.

I forgot about this song. It plays during the opening scene. Sets the tone incredibly well:

@Dalai:@plasticsaber: That's cool.  I didn't realize that VVVVVV had such a great soundtrack.

Man, between VVVVVV, Super Meat Boy, and Scott Pilgrim, it seems like a great year for retro 8-bit music:

@Hailinel: Yep, 'twas a great year.  In games like VVVVVV and Super Meat Boy where you die, say, fifty times a minute, good music makes all the difference.

Jack Wall FTW. Mass Effect 2 crushes almost all actual movie OSTs. SMBis the shit too, though, as is SP v W.

Cata is the best of the year.  I'll throw in the login screen music called The Shattering. A tidbit from the youtube comments:
0:0- 2:37 Elemental with Classic WoW log in Music (Cataclysm) 2:38- 3:20 Sacred (Stormwind theme) 3:21- 4:45 Cold Mountain (Cataclysm) 4:45- 5:25 Moonglade (Cataclysm) 5:26- 5:58 Lost Isles Rescue (Cataclysm) 5:58- 6:38 Vanilla WoW theme (edited in BC) 6:39- 7:37 Invincible (WotLk Track) 7:38- 8:35 Eye of the Vortex (Cataclysm) 8:35- 9:27 Worgen Music! (Cataclysm) 9:28- 10:02 Gunships! (WotLK) 10:03- 10:56 Dark Ironforge (edited from Ulduar) 10:57- 12:06 Vanilla WoW Them a Tenuous Pact

Got hooked on the FFXIII battle theme as Brad did:.

Bayonetta had some great tunes as well:
I'm glad that Gamasutra gave it third best game of the year. Take a crazy game and throw in a Japanese-y Frank Sinatra classic for a battle theme.  You'll get part of what liking Bayonetta is like which is to say I Don't Why ( I Just Do).  ...and for reference:

I was overwhelmed by "Far Away" when riding to Mexico. When the song came on and I was riding my horse, I just though to myself: "This is what makes modern gaming so special".

My nomination is going to have to go to Final Fantasy XIII, which is a horrible game, but has an absolutely fantastic soundtrack.

Lots of great music in this thread! I'll just have to add one of the overlooked games of this year:

This last one is a little slow and most will think it's weak, but it's one of my favorite songs of all time.

I've mentioned already that VVVVVV's soundtrack is my favourite for this year. Clear second would be Super Meat Boy, got this song stuck in my head now:

Donkey Kong Country Returns also had an excellent soundtrack, although I'm disappointed that there weren't more original tracks.  Here my two favorites (one original and one rework):

i think the last good one was x. i was a fan of the ps1 games and a few on the snes as well. ffxiii isnt a 'horrible' game exactly, its just not very good, considering how long they spent on it and what they talked it up to be. 5-6 years if not more in development to create a game like that just isn't good enough. if blizzard develop a game for that long its one bloody good game, and im sure that would go for a lot of companies if they had that long to make a game. like i said though, the music is really wonderful and probably its shining light besides the visuals. the game is like an attractive girl with a sweet voice, but an absolutely crap personality you just can't stand to be around.
