I just picked up Sleeping Dogs for PS3 at Walmart and to my dismay there is a gaudy Walmart graphic printed on the cover. I thought it was just a sticker I could peel off and had I known it was printed on I would've bought the game elsewhere.

I know some of you will not care about this first world problem, or make snarky comments about purchasing from Walmart, and claim PC gaming/digital download superiority but fuck I'm paying $60 for a retail product 'cause I like to collect physical things.

This is pure shit and totally devalues the product and defaces the otherwise cool cover art. I called up Square/Enix and the customer service guy totally agreed and forwarded my words to corporate. I also filed a complaint with Walmart's corporate buyer and explained why this is some lame ass business. They shouldn't gimp your copy with their branding because you bought a first run game with a DLC bonus. I hope more people complain so retailers and publishers stop doing this but I also see this shit as another reason to go all digital next generation. /rant

If I saw that I wouldnt buy it. Should of just left yo!

#4 Posted by billyhoush (1186 posts) -

Yeah. Maybe it's time for an Amazon Prime account.

#5 Posted by Dagbiker (6898 posts) -

Your product wasnt gimped. Also you must have seen the package before you bought it.

#6 Posted by MrKlorox (11185 posts) -

Wow, gross. That's terrible for collectors in multiple ways. One, your box isn't clean so your nice curated library of games is tarnished. Two, for those lunatics who will inexplicably try to obtain all possible 'versions' of this game (there's always a few for every game out there) it's yet one more box to bother with tracking down.

#7 Posted by TekZero (2638 posts) -

Totally agree with you. That's why I buy boxed copies of the game. It looks great on the shelf. If it's got a store logo on it like that, it ruins it's value.

I'll avoid buying games at Wal Mart for that very reason.

It looks like it's printed on the cardboard sleeve that goes around the game case. Those things are fucking stupid and pointless anyway. If it was printed on the box art itself I would be mad though.

#9 Posted by LiquidPrince (15606 posts) -

Yeah, I've not bought things because of those stupid things.

It's printed on the actual cover itself. I thought it was a sleeve or a sticker because I would imagine they would anticipate people like me getting pissed.

Amazon all the way, yo!

Yeah, unless that's the insert and you just pulled it out, that's not that big of a deal. We get those paper surrounds often in Canada (Ubisoft is big on it as I recall) because of the requirement that all products have French labels, and I drop them in the recycling as I'm getting rid of the non-manual game paperwork.

#15 Posted by ZeForgotten (10397 posts) -

Nothing like that is going on in any stores around here so it has stopped. Actually it never happened at all here, so I'm cool.
Then again I live in Denmark and we don't have Wal-Marts so that's a plus

Yeah, I thought it was a similar to the paper French manuals that you can toss as I'm in Canada as well. This was printed on the ACTUAL COVER.

That's a shitty thing.

#18 Posted by Hailinel (22704 posts) -

This is sadly nothing new. My old copy of Metroid Prime had the Target logo printed on the front of the cover.

Walmarts are a double edged sword. For an ultra small town, it's pretty dope to have direct access to things you would normally have to order. But for that same small town, it's a monopoly that stomps out other businesses that have overlapping uses.

That sure is ugly. Why waste money printing Wal-Mart specific box art when Wal-Mart could just put a sticker on it instead?

@billyhoush May the gods be kind to you.

Hail Amazon Prime. Hail!

Gamestop has done the same thing. My PS3 copy of Borderlands has a fat GAMESTOP EXCLUSIVE CONTENT. On the box so... its not just walmart.

#23 Posted by NegativeCero (2925 posts) -

Yeah, that sucks, especially if a game has great cover art. That their branding covers that one guy's face bothers my OCD self.

Have you been to Walmart? A customer service rep takes it out of the glass case, walks it to the counter, you pay, and bags it. I didn't find out until I got home and took off the shrink wrap. My first run games always had stickers or the bonus content emblems printed on the covers didn't have the store's name.

I just realized my copy of Arkham Asylum has this too. That's annoying, but I got it secondhand online, so whatever I guess.

Okay, that's terrible. I'm not particularly picky about game packaging, but that's over the line. The obvious half-assedness of the graphic is an added slap in the face.

He probably just didn't give it much thought. I'd assume that was a sticker under the plastic wrap as well.

#35 Posted by wjb (1551 posts) -

It's amazing how out of touch retail companies are. It's like no one has ever bought a video game or DVD or CD before. Who doesn't like non-peelable stickers all over their shit?

"We need to put our logo on the box so people know where they got it from."

"Why wouldn't they? They're the ones who bought it."

"Quit putting holes in this!"

I'm surprised publishers let it happen. I wouldn't want some tacky logo infringing on my cover art, but I guess money.

#36 Posted by punkxblaze (2877 posts) -

That is really terrible and obtrusive.

#37 Posted by billyhoush (1186 posts) -

What I'm guessing is that the publisher had that spot reserved on the cover for retailers that pay for the exclusive content to send in their custom graphics for the promotion. I heard the Best Buy GSP bonus has a logo with a picture of Georges St-Pierre on the front whereas the graphics guy at Walmart corporate didn't give a shit and just sent them the pricing sticker graphic.

#38 Posted by iam3green (14388 posts) -

aww that is horrible. walmart don't do that.

#39 Posted by beepmachine (614 posts) -

So pre orders have gotten to the point now where they are ready to be printed right on the boxes? That's dumb as shit. I personally wouldn't really care because how often do you look at the box, but I agree that the principle of that is fucking shitty. They wouldn't do this with other products because people would lose their minds, but it's so accepted for games, which is a shame.

@JeanLuc said:

Stickers would actually require production, or at least increased production, of physical things that cost money. All the box art gets printed in one place all at once in big sheets. It just takes the image file and a minute adjusting it in the computer to have the Walmart graphic on there right when they're printed onto the blank covers. Since retailers order a certain number of copies (when a game "ships" a number of copies) the printers know exactly how many sheets need to have the walmart version on there and send those off to be cut, packaged and shipped to Walmart warehouses. Frankly its genius in terms of cost buts its ugly as hell.

When you put it like that, it makes me think no amount of customer outrage would change their minds. Walmart is all about cutting as much cost as they can.

#46 Posted by Zaccheus (1770 posts) -

I don't really care personally, but that's still fucked up. I mean why is it printed? Wouldn't a simple sticker on the plastic cover suffice? Such a cool cover art too...

#47 Posted by Lukeweizer (2508 posts) -

The publisher let them do it. It's not like Walmart went rogue and printed their own copies.

@PrivateIronTFU said:

Wal-Mart doesn't let you grab your own game, they do it for you.

Besides, why would he rub his game case? That's ridiculous.

#49 Posted by Hunter5024 (5170 posts) -

This is why I buy all of my new games at Amazon now. Hate to be part of the problem but my local game store closed down... which is probably for the best because I would waste about 10 dollars in gas just getting there and back. The lesson here is avoid big retail, support local businesses if you can, and if not feed amazon the last of your dignity.

#50 Posted by Dagbiker (6898 posts) -

@billyhoush:

Oh, I rarely go to Wall Marts, and I have never bought a game from there.

Has anyone asked if they sell walls at Wall Mart yet, Anyone make that joke?
