We've known for a while now that a sort of Bionic Commando Rearmed-style retro revival of R-Type subtitled Dimensions was on its way to Xbox Live Arcade, but we didn't know when--until today, that is, since Microsoft has announced that the game will be out as this week's XBLA release.

Buying Dimensions gets you both the original arcade R-Type and the sequel R-Type II. But don't think you're just getting shoveled-in arcade ports, as in many past XBLA releases from earlier in the service's life. No sir, they've put some work into this game. Observe.

Here's a few more screens with which you may wet yer whistle. These all appear to depict the new 3D mode, but then, you've had a couple of decades to check out the 2D originals already.

How slick is all that? As few shooters as you see these days, I have to profess some excitement for this release. All that extra retro love does come at a relatively burly price of 1200 points, or $15.00 on real people money. But--and I only say this pending a chance to play the final game--all those extra features actually look worth it to me.

If you're getting both R-Types, it doesn't seem like a bad price.  I think I'll pick this one up.

Ouch, $15? You can grab R-Types on the Playstation Store for only $6. Sure it's lacking that extra content, but that is less than half the price. $10 would seem more reasonable.

Looks cool - but 1200 is a lot to ask right now for that.  Insta-buy at 800 though.

I'm a wait and see guy as well.  I'll probably end up just getting the demo though.  My baby gets the money before my Xbox.  Darn Diapers!

That looks really nice, but I really hope it's better than BCR; I hated that game. It was bad enough on its own, but comparing it to the original makes you see how bad it really is.

I loved playing R-Type inside the arcade, and this looks fun as hell. 1200 points does seem a bit high though. But co-op is where it's at for me. And with two games included, I might have to bite the bullet on this one.

Demo first. I love the R-Type series, but I don't know if I'm gonna bite at two games that are extremely hard. Though the addons are awesome.

conflicted here, so on the fence.  What's not helping is nearly 3800 XBLA points over the holidays burning a hole in mine pocket.  :)

I kinda wish more shooters would come out on the PS3 along with the 360 versions. *waits for Ikaruga... sigh*

Still, $15 is a bit too rich for my blood right now (LBP is nickle-diming me to death. One of these days I'm going to put my foot down, but... CUUUUUTE)

Maybe I'll get a $40 MS point card if I decided to get Puzzle Quest: Galatrix on the 360 instead of the PS3, this'll be considered, but if it instantly dropped to 800 ($10) I'd consider buying it more. The 3D mode/cabinet look is pretty neat.

Does nobody else think it looks impossible to play with the 'dimensional' perspectives turned on?  Why do we need anything other than straight on?  Other than the dumb dimensions and the swiveling arcade cabinet, looks sweet.

So... instead of being bad at R-Type, I can feel like I'm standing next to somebody who is bad at R-Type.

Disorienting yet reaffirming.

Not really digging that $15 price tag...  I would love to have a option where I could ditch the 1st and 2nd games and get just Dimensions for $10.  I might check out the trial but I'm not planning on buying it.  For those that haven't played the old games its not a bad bargain and it was a really fun game back in the 2d era.

Does "Arcade Mode" come with the blaring sounds of a dozen other games, a sticky floor and the combined odor of industrial carpet cleaner and b.o.?  This looks like a demo-only game for me, especially at that price.

I can't get enough of these old shooters. I'd love to see Gradius get the same treatment, I personally still rank Gradius V as one of my all time favorite games. I even play Gradius Galaxies on GBA using my DS with some frequency. Awesome.

After paying $15 for Braid, it would be hard not to do the same for some updated retro R-Type goodness, especially if it is as polished as it looks.

It's cheaply priced, but I have 10 games on backlog that I could be playing.  There are just too many games to keep buying more of them. Game glut these days.
