im not one for posting whole articles from Kotaku or any other site but god damn

A three-year-old in Wilson County, Tennessee died Sunday evening after accidentally shooting herself in the abdomen with a weapon she may have mistaken for a plastic Wii facsimile.

At least that's how the news is being reported today in The Tennessean. Three-year-old Cheyenne Alexis McKeehan had been playing a Nintendo Wii game in her living room using a gun-shaped controller which, according to the story, "looked very similar to the real handgun" her stepfather used to scare away dogs that were hanging about the family's home.

The child had been playing a Nintendo Wii video game, Ashe said. The game's controller was shaped like a gun that looked very similar to the real handgun, which her stepfather had put on a table in the living room. Ashe said the girl pulled the gun off the table and it went off.

My question is this: why is the Wii even mentioned in this article? Someone left a loaded handgun in reach of a three-year-old girl. That's the story here.

The fact that the child was playing with a Wii controller that looked like a real gun is a non-issue. This is a three-year-old we are talking about. Three-year-olds touch everything, regardless of whether or not it looks like something they were allowed to touch previously.

Not to mention the fact that most Wii gun controllers are either white and blue or Nerf-colored, neither of which are colors commonly found in handguns.

This story is horrible, unfortunate, and tragic, but the way that things are worded here make me wonder if there aren't pair of parents out there thinking that had they not let their child play that Wii game, she would still be alive today.

I don't think the majority of our readership needs clarification on this, but just in case, no - if her stepfather had not left a loaded weapon within reach of a curious three-year-old's hands, she would still be alive today.

I love how the press slip in a cheap shot at videogames. Who didn't see that coming? I hate the way they do that. A three year old shot themselves, and as you said, that's the story here. End of. But then the Wii was found in the house, and hey presto! The press can claim the Wii did it. Even though no Wii game tells you to shoot yourself. It was a tragic accident.

I love these "KILLER GAMES" stories because it always ends up being just really stupid people doing stupid things and there was a dead person 30feet away from a console.

Shot herself in the abdomen? Clearly a suicide.

But seriously, poor kid.

I blame video games.

But seriously, why did that dude have a gun on the table?

Just saw this as well...if the stepfather wasn't a complete idiot, leaving a loaded handgun within reach of a precocious three-year-old, she'd still be alive today. He has no one to blame but himself for this tragedy. I hope he gets what he deserves.

Surprised that the three year old had the strength to pull the triggers. Those are quite tough.

Can somebody show me a picture of the controller? Unless somebody mistook the Wii for the Odyssey, I'm not buying it. And even then, you still have the right to punch the reporter in the face.

As usual, video game message boards go off the wall whenever they see stories like this.  Nothing about the original article as far as I can tell is meant to indict video games.  It's just a reason the sheriff gave for why the girl might have picked up the gun in the first place.  I doubt anyone blames anything for this tragedy other than the person leaving a loaded handgun within reach of a three year old.

WHO THE FUCK HAS A LOADED GUN USED TO SCARE OFF DOGS!? If my dog got in my neighbors yard, and they shot at it I would kick their ass. This is the result of a fucked up father, and I hope he goes to jail for being an idiot. How do they know the girl thought it was a Wii-controller? She obviously didn't live to talk about her mistake.

I'm not a gun advocate in any way, but laws are not meant to prevent stupidity.  People need to be accountable for their own actions to some degree, right?

I read about this on Kotaku about an hour ago, I can't believe that the parent was stupid enough to leave a loaded hand gun around their three-year-old. This really is a tragedy.

Sorry man, but guns don't kill people, people kill people.

That being said, most people who own guns for "home defense" or something probably shouldn't.  I just feel like I should be able to buy a gun if I wanted to, though I probably never will.  Man... I'm confusing myself now.

Oh, yes, the stepfather's clearly retarded and insane, but Nintendo's responsible because of gun-shaped remote controls!  I bet these people said Grand Theft Auto causes teen crime, too (in case you're wondering why I brought that up, the FBI determined that teen crime rates dropped corresponding with the release of the game, but the press doesn't care because it has violence, so it must have caused crime!).  The press just loves to shift some of the blame to video games, don't they?  They need to find a new scapegoat for a new time.

Depends on your location, I suppose.  I've shot and killed a neighbor's dog which was attacking livestock, and we had them come remove the dog and pay for the injured livestock as well, although the gun was a rifle and stored in a safe.  We've had guns around the house as long as I can remember.  This is simply unacceptable negligence and child abuse by the step father, and he should be charged and convicted as such.  You NEVER leave a gun, loaded or otherwise, anywhere a child could POSSIBLY see it, get ahold of it, whatever.  He's an idiot, and it's a damn tragedy his stupidity had to kill someone else.

This guy is obviously on idiot. Of course the guy who left a loaded handgun on the table in a house with kids would use a gun to scare dogs.  Not everyone is that stupid.  My brother in law has a couple guns, and he always keeps them in a gun safe, unloaded in a closet in the basement. He won't even take them out while his 1 year old daughter is even in the house.  Just because there is one retard doesn't mean everyone is.

Yes, i read this on a Dutch game-site this noon.
A tragedy.
The mother and step father wil for sure face legal prosecution for negligence at least.
