As the year comes to an end, I think this is an opportune time to take a look forward at the year ahead in gaming. Last year we did this and the nine games we previewed were either awesome as expected (Ghostbusters, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Madworld, and Brutal Legend), pretty good (Punch-Out and Resident Evil 5), or delayed until early 2010 (Bioshock 2, God of War 3, and Dante's Inferno). The three games delayed until early 2010 are basically shoe-ins for this year's list as well because all the delays have done is make us salivate more as details leaked out to us. So with no further ado, here are the top 10 games to look forward to in 2010.

1. Bioshock 2: I said it last year and I'll say it again this year: I will go screaming through the halls here at ESPN the day this comes out from sheer, overwhelming joy. With a lot more revealed in terms of the plot and gameplay, this easily tops my list as my most anticipated game as you return to Rapture and assume the role of a Big Daddy 10 years after the events of the first Bioshock. Along with this new twist from the first Bioshock, there is also a confirmed multiplayer mode and the ability to use your Big Daddy suit to explore the ocean immediately surrounding Rapture, which should allow for all kinds of new and creative ways to explore the once great cultural haven beneath the waves. Barring any last minute setbacks, expect Bioshock 2 to hit store shelves February 9, 2010, for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

2. God of War 3: There are few trilogies in video games that are more celebrated than God of War and this is before the third one has even hit store shelves. Inspired by many classic stories from Greek mythology, you play as Kratos once more as you attempt to work out your anger issues with the gods for the last time. I had a chance to play an advanced demo of this (which I will post a special PS3 Q1 Preview video next week where I got to talk with some of the developers of God of War 3) and you will flip just like Kratos' point of view seamlessly does in several epic boss battles as you should expect to start wrapping up this classic trilogy on your PS3 towards the end of March 2010.

3. Dante's Inferno: Many are calling this a God of War rip-off, but I'm a firm believer that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and this might be even better because it isn't limited to just the PS3. Inspired by the part of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy of the same name, if Kratos has anger management issues, Dante is the ultimate obsessive, smothering boyfriend as he is willing to fight through the nine layers of hell to save his girlfriend's soul while having a tapestry depicting the holy cross stitched to his chest. Just like God of War, Dante's Inferno mixes classic plot with tremendous, bloody action (and a little bit of nudity) and amazing, original monsters based on this classic work of literature to get any action/adventure fan's blood pumping. Just like Bioshock 2, Dante's Inferno hits store shelves on February 9, 2010, for Xbox 360, PS3, and PSP.

4. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle: Travis Touchdown returns with his beam katana (it's a lightsaber, but that whole copyright thing can be such a pain sometimes) as he has gotten lazy and let his number one world assassin ranking drop all the way down to 51 (possibly in honor of game creator Suda 51?). When things get personal though, Travis once again hones his wrestling inspired moves and attempts to move back up the ladder to the number one spot with even more crazy, over the top boss battles that are even better than those from the first game. The sandbox system is gone to help save on time while you hunt down your quarry and travel from location to location by just going to a map menu now and since that was one of the major complaints from the first game, it looks like No More Heroes 2 could be another sleeper hit from the deranged mind of Suda 51 and his Grasshopper Studios. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle is a Wii exclusive and should hit store shelves January 28, 2010.

5. Dead Rising 2: The first Dead Rising broke new ground in zombie bashing by having an unheard of (for the time) amount of NPCs on screen at one time with no lag. And it was set in a mall allowing you to have a variety of weapons from food court table umbrellas to golf clubs to nerf guns. Dead Rising 2 takes several of the great elements from the first game (regular guy dropped into a zombie invasion) and puts a whole new twist on it that has me chomping at the bit as I count the days until this hits store shelves. Dead Rising 2 assumes you failed to completely contain the zombie virus at Willamette from the first Dead Rising and now there are zombie outbreaks all over the country. These zombie zones have been cordoned off by the government, but with times being tough, leave it to reality TV to step in to offer the masses a chance to risk life and limb for amazing prizes. "Terror is Reality" is one of these reality TV shows that asks people to help control the zombie population in new and inventive ways for the chance at huge piles of cash. Of course, you're being dropped into these living nightmares with nothing but the clothes on your back, but it wouldn't be a zombie game if you were given a gatling gun from the get go. Add in what could be the best online multiplayer of the year as Dead Rising 2 pits you against three other players in an American Gladiators meets Resident Evil scenario and sends you all on your merry competitive ways. Zombie bashing will never be the same again on your Xbox 360, PS3, and PC come the end of Q1.

6. DC Universe Online: It is hyped as what could be the greatest MMORPG of all-time as it allows you to interact with the best of the best of the DC Comics Universe with your own original character and with a member of current comic book royalty in Jim Lee serving as the Executive Creative Director, you know you are in good hands. Unfortunately, it has been delayed countless times and is a game on life support to say the least. DCU Online was supposed to come out last summer, but now we are still waiting to rub elbows with the Dark Knight and Man of Steel and take down the likes of Lex Luthor, Mr. Freeze, the Joker, Bizarro, and many, many, many more as a loose Q3 2010 date has been set for this possible PS3 and PC powerhouse. If DCU Online doesn't come out this year, I think the game will be completely scrapped because it has been in production for far too long for us to wait much longer for it.

7. Mafia 2: Another strong title on the horizon from the folks at 2K (why do they even bother with sports anymore when their shooters and action/adventure games are so awesome?) is Mafia 2. Set in a fictitious mob family in the late 1940s-early 1950s, Mafia 2 combines a GTA-style sandbox experience with a Hollywood-inspired cinematic driven plot as you play as Vito, a small-time hood trying his best to get his piece of the American dream in some less than savory ways. Add in some awesome action sequences and Martin Scorsese couldn't have done a better job with this. Mafia 2 looks to be the strongest release due out in Q2 when it lands on store shelves May 3, 2010, for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

8. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Every major attempt to bring the fabled history of Castlevania into the 3D realm has fallen flat on its face and the only thing keeping the series alive has been a successful run with the classic side scrolling action on handheld systems. Things may change come the next holiday season. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow has you cast as the mysterious figure Gabriel as you fight through a massive world in the third person. Mix in some puzzles and some holy (or unholy) artifacts to help power up Gabriel and you have the base for a nice action/adventure game. There aren't a lot of details out on this one yet in terms of how Gabriel fits in with the Belmont clan or if Dracula is even the main force of darkness here (although I'm sure he is because it wouldn't be Castlevania if he wasn't), but from what I've seen so far, this could be the best chance to FINALLY bring Castlevania successfully onto modern consoles especially with Hideo Kojima (of the Metal Gear Series) consulting on this project, Patrick Stewart serving as the narrator, and some God of War and Assassin's Creed style gameplay mechanics shown in the early trailer. Expect Castlevania: Lords of Shadow to emerge from the darkness next holiday season for Xbox 360 and PS3.

9. Super Mario Galaxy 2: Everyone loves Mario, plain and simple. Another game expected to be released in time for the next holiday season, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be the first direct sequel to another Mario game in a decade (since Super Mario World 2 back for the SNES). Add in that you are definitely going to be riding Yoshi around and I'm sure you'll see the return of some other classic powers and this is another sure fire hit for Nintendo. Plus, don't forget that you are sure to see a lot of classic Mario themes, enemies, and puzzles mixed in with the tremendous planetary exploration aspect introduced in the first Super Mario Galaxy and this will be another platforming gem from Nintendo. Super Mario Galaxy 2 should be out in time for next holiday season and is, of course, a Nintendo exclusive.

10. Metroid: Other M: Nintendo has the strongest first party franchises out there and another one confirmed for next holiday season is Metroid: Other M. A lot like seeing Hideo Kojima's production studio helping out with Castlevania, Team Ninja, best known for the Ninja Gaiden games, has stepped up to help give a bit of an anime style and storytelling flair to this newest Samus Aran adventure. Mixing some classic side-scrolling action and some 3D arena battles as you progress through the game and interchange between the two seamlessly should keep you on your toes and keep you from getting bored. Add in that at least Ridley has been confirmed as one of the boss battles and it should be interesting to see what Team Ninja can do with this beloved Nintendo franchise. Metroid: Other M is another Wii exclusive and should be out in time for the next holiday season.

So there is my top 10 for the coming year and it is one heck of a list. On top of these games, there are also lots of other games that I just could not take the time to go into right now, plus I did not feel they were worthy of the top 10. MAG, Heavy Rain, Bayonetta, Darksiders, Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands (adding a 4th chapter to one of the better trilogies for the last generation of consoles was not necessary and is thus a major reason that Prince of Persia stayed off the list), Mass Effect 2, Just Cause 2, Epic Mickey, Red Steel 2, Mega Man 10, Gran Turismo 5, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and an unnamed Legend of Zelda title for the Wii (not enough info for me to be confident that this will make it in time for a 2010 release, but Nintendo is the best at keeping secrets) all deserve honorable mentions and should be awesome games in 2010, but these are my top 10 and I stand by them. It is going to be another great year for games and I cannot wait. Until then, have a great New Year and my resolution is that I will be sure to try my best to keep you informed over the course of 2010 just as I did over the course of 2009.

Ah, man, no Splinter Cell: Conviction?

I have high hopes for Bioshock 2, but I'm not sure it'll realize those hopes.  Mafia 2 and the new Castlevania should be pretty good, though.

I thought 1,2,3 - okay, okay, okay.
Then I got worried as scrolled through the middle and saw No More Heroes 2, DC Universe Online and Dead Rising 2.
Then it started making sense again at Mafia 2 and onward.

Definitely not my list but s'okay I guess.

Amazingly, Dark Void is not listed either. Seems strange to not list a game that seems to be highly anticipated from quite a substantial group. But all in all, without question, the most anticipated game for next year from myself and probably another couple hundred million people is Starcraft 2. It probably will not be the greatest game of next year (hopefully it will be though), but it is considerably the most anticipated game for next year. And yes, I can guarantee you that it will be out next year around beginning of Q4 or holiday season. Word on the street says WoW: Cataclysm will be out by Q4 of 2010 or Q1 of 2011 and I highly doubt that Blizzard would release that expansion before Starcraft 2 unless they want Korea to declare war on them.

i shall now hijack your (pretty good) list with my own! :)

Top 10 most anticipated games of 2010

These are my 10 most anticipated games of 2010, chosen from the most information I know about them, meaning that if some big game has little to no information yet, I won't include it. So games like Infamous 2, Gears of War 3, Fable 3 or Halo Reach will be nowhere to be seen on this list. Let's do this then!

1. Super Street Fighter IV

Street Fighter 2 is my favorite game ever. Street Fighter 4 is one of my favorite games ever, and one of my games of the year for 2009. Super SF4 adds 10 (!) characters, new ultras, new moves, new stages, new modes... and people bitch this isn't a DLC add on? If there is ONE game that I wish I could have in my hands now, its Super Street Fighter 4.

2. Darksiders

Man this came out of nowhere. This game looks freaking AWESOME to me, and unless its one of the biggest deceptions ever from watching videos to actually playing, this will be probably in my 2010 GOTY list. A cross of Zelda style adventure and dungeons with god of war style slash-em-up action, with tons of different powers and abilities, different weapons, Epona...I mean Ruin, the warhorse that you can ride and attack from, and a 20 hour long campaign? DAMN SON! Add to that beautiful graphics (i love joe madurera's art, and the cartoony art design in this game looks awesome) and what seems to be great voice acting (mark hammil is in it!) and you have what would be my most anticipated game in months if it wasn't for my love for all things Street Fighter. But hey, its number 2, and it's out in the first week of 2010. Please be as good as you look Darksiders, PLEASE!

3. Heavy Rain

Having not actually ever played Indigo Prophecies (or Fahrenheit as it's know here in Europe), I still grow more and more curious about Heavy Rain. It looks absolutely stunning, the premise is great (gotta love serial killer stuff), and the gameplay looks really different and interesting, and thats a huge plus in my book. Very excited about this game, hopefully it lives up to the hype.

4. Mass Effect 2

The first Mass Effect, despite many problems, was still one of the best Western RPGs I've ever played, and the sequel looks improved in every way. I hate to say it, but it seems that Bioware can do no wrong lately (Dragon Age was amazing). and from the latest videos (and there are many!) it seems that Mass Effect 2 will blow the first one out of the water. the combat looks 10 times bettet, as do the graphics, and the overall feel of the game feels darker... I have a feeling this will easily be one of the best games of 2010

5. God of War III

Loved the first god Of War game, finished it in 2 sittings. Loved the second game, but never actually finished it... and from the demo, the third game continues it's violence tradition of great graphics, awesome set pieces, simple but fun gameplay, and just a ton of blood and gore. Hopefully God Of War 3 will have more of the amazing set pieces the series has gotten us used to. Can't wait to play Kratos one more time in 2010!

6. BioShock 2

Sequel to my 2007 GOTY and one of my favorite games ever, Bioshock 2 unfortunately runs the risk of disapointing, the standards of the first game are just set too high. Still, I have hopes that it will be as good, and the latest media seems to show that it's on the right track... the vibe is deffnately still there, and the thought of playing a Big Daddy is just badass. Even the fact that Ken Levine has nothing to do with it doesn't worry me as much as it did at first.

7. Final Fantasy XIII

Even if I've grown a bit bored of JRPGs in the last few years, leaning towards western style rpgs, I have to be honest... it's Final Fantasy! Unless you totally hate JRPGs, you have to be excited about another proper Final Fantasy (the mmos don't count for me), and even if Square's games aren't what they used to be, I'm still excited as hell for this. And hey, Transformer summons = win :D

8. Alan Wake

Will we actually finally see Alan Wake in a store shelf for purchase in 2010? It certainly seems so, after many years of waiting with little info, we finally saw the game in motion and it looks beautiful, if a bit too Alone In the Dark-y. Still, as long as its more psychological than jump-scary (as it was initially suggested) Alan Wake should hopefully live up to its years and years of hype... it probably won't, but I hope that at least its just a great game.

9. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction

Like Alan Wake, seems this game was doomed to never actually come out, but after many revisions, the latest and seemingly final iteration of Conviction seems to be the best yet. Although we have seen that Sam will probably go back to using his high tech stuff at some point in the game, its the Sam using broken glass to peak under doors and no tech weapons or gadgets that makes me interested in this game. The visual style is also of note, it looks beautiful, and the use of projected videos while you play seems really cool. Oh and did I mention Sam apparently likes to torture people in bathrooms? First half of 2010 seems to be one of the best ever!

10. Lost Planet 2

Last but not least, a sequel to a game that many people didn't like, but I personally loved every minute of, Lost Planet. The first game still looks amazing even today (those explosions and huge monsters are unforgetable), and the sequel seems to fall in the "bigger and better...and then even bigger" category. Stunning graphics, 4 player co-op, crazy third person shooting action against gigantic bosses, rideable mechs... if the full game is as good as the demo (and has a story to back it up!) this will be one of my favorite games of 2010. Man I love Capcom...

Decent list, even if I didn't read all of it (only read the ones that interested me), but one complaint: where are you getting the Other M info? Not much is known about the game yet, outside what the E3 video showed us, so isn't it a bit early to describe it in detail like that?

You work for  ESPNVideoGames.com, but don't have a single sports title in that list. What is wrong with you? Shouldn't you have Tiger Woods Xtreme Beach Volley Ball up there or something? Also, how is it that Heavy Rain and Mass Effect 2 aren't worthy of the top 10 yet Dante's Inferno, Dead Rising 2, and DC Universe Online are?

While I'm going to steer clear of arguing with anybody else's opinion, I am going to say that I love the fact the OP found pictures of God of War III and Dante's Inferno that look almost identical.

@day2daze: Well if there is one idiot it is you... because you missed completly the point.

I compared not the games, but the hype. The Godfather 2 before it landed was also lauded as the greatest game at the time, and when it was released?

I played the first mafia... And though it was good it was also boring.

So don't hope too much, or you'll bound to be dissapointed.

maybe from people like you. i never once thought the godfather was going to be anything other then what it is.
the first mafia was a technical achievement, but the devs could not do much more then that and of course, crafting the amazing story.

technology, as you may know, has finally caught up with Illusion's vision. The "illusion' engine they're using for Mafia 2 took 7 years to build. Built from the ground up, what's that engine for the godfather on 360? the SAME engine used for the ps2 and then what, it wasn't shitty enough to begin with so they went back and used it for the sequel? and remember, these are the guys making dante's and your little Dead space 2, so don't hope too much.

the egg is showing here buddy, that's what i'll leave you with. you don't know any of the facts and specs i've researched on this game. if it doesn't interest you fine; but to compare this to the fucking godfather because they're both free-roaming mob games is way out of line.

i wouldn't hope too much for splinter cell. looks like the AI is dumber then a guard in Ass creed.
as for Heavy rain, yuuuup, don't hope too much for another highly pretentious but in actual game play execution piece of shit Indigo prophecy.

Don't forget- hype can kill a game sure, mass effect, just cause. But plenty of games have completely justified hype, as seen in gears of war, gta.

First of all WHERE THE FUCK IS Super Street Fighter IV?!?!?!??  This is gunna be like the only must required game to be bought by every human being alive in 2010.

Next, Bayonetta's getting amazing reviews, yet it's not on this list?  Also, Square Enix could take a fat shit, call it "Final Fantasy", and legions of fans (including myself) will still buy it no matter what, so FFXIII should be up there.  I'm also pretty positive, just on a feeling, that Mass Effect 2 should be up there... I'm going to be playing the first one about a week or two before part 2 is released, so I don't have an honest opinion yet, but regardless Bioware is making it and it most likely should be up there.

Moving-on, there has never been a good 3D Castlevania game, so I'm sceptical of Lords of Shadow.

Dante's Inferno Demo was crap and I expect the full game to be as well.

Then there's DC Universe Online and Mafia 2?   Really?  REALLY?   That's probably some biased-ass shit right thar.

Your list sucks my friend... it completely sucks ass.  Cheers! :p

I never said that they will be the best games EVA.

It's not a question of ego, it is a question of putting things in perspective. Games are games, and in the end no game is perfect, and the probability it will be one of the best ones ever released are very slim.

I never played gears so i can't speak about it, but though the critics are most of them love them, many people dislike the gta games for being one trick poney since the third one.

as far as my understanding goes, you think that this list is 'meh' or 'no', that there are much more deserving games- splinter cell, ME2, alan wake, heavy rain- all the usual AAA suspects of course.

No one said anything about perfect, of course no game is perfect, which makes the chances that Mafia 2 being the greatest one ever released all the more likely ;)

we can argue all day; one of two things will happen on may 3rd next year- you'll be right and i'll look like an idiot, or vice versa and you and all the other fools will be running out in the first week to get it after Jeff gives it a 5 or w/e and Jim can't believe how stupid he was to overlook it (then again he's british, the whole mobster thing just doesn't do it for him i'm sure). Like I said, after it gets straight 10's. Which, beleive me or don't,it will. I'm calling it and i'll be back in may to gloat SAVAGELY.
don't get me wrong, i know i've been wrong before, Brutal Legend comes quickly to mind.

Super street fighter sucks. Your biuased ass shit. see? it's easy
Mass defect- let's not forget how the first one turned out.
Final fantasy... god i hate that series. Needs to be buried, quick.
'there has never been a good 3D Castlevania game'
yup, and now they've learned from their mistakes.
Really? REALLY? Mafia 2, made the list??? Who would have thought? after the first one got straight 9's.. that's, that's just a shocker.
you see, how opinions can't and don't mean shit?

I like you Espn dude, alot.  Your list doesn't suck, it's wholly original, and you picked the games you know you'll like.. not AAA butt fucking cause everyone else does. Thank you.

ATTENTION EVERYONE!! (sorry to dude's napping sister)

 Batman: Arkham Asylum,

YOU SEE THAT? That is the mark of a trained professional.

While the rest of you chumps were thinking 'just another failed adaptation,' or today, in jeust's feeble mind- 'just another failed open-world crime saga,' this man was predicting the fucking future!

His games may not be your game's but they'll be good- oh so good.

i for one think dante's looks like shit. i'm a stickler for progress.

but i'm sure plenty of people will get a kick out of it, and will most likely scrape at least an 8, or 4 stars in giantbombs case.

Fine, fine, yeah, yeah... I guess people like different stuffs.  I'm Italian and greatly dislike Mafia games and movies in the first place, but more importantly I just thought the first Mafia was super boring.  I also don't even like GTA's/Open World/Real Games anymore.  If I play a game, I wanna escape to a world full of super powers, sci-fi, fantasy, anime, and/or just straight over-the-top stuff... not something trying to put me into real world situations.

But moving-on, you guys honestly mean that you did not put-in 999+ hours into each and every Final Fantasy and Street Fighter game ever released and will do the same in the future, and want nothing more but to get your hands on the next iterations of these games?!  I'm just baffled that there's actually people like this... that's all.

Anyway, I'm just waiting for the Street Fighter IV /  Fighting Game Players to come to this thread and help me out here.  Super Street Fighter IV should in all honestly, and easily, be the game that should be #1 on every real gamers 2010 list, in my opinion.

I think this list is 'meh' and 'no' because it doesn't bode with my expectations towards the next year. But i understand the curiosity and desire all of them have, just not for me. I have my own tastes, and as therefore my own list.

Let's see about your prediction... :p

About brutal legends i never thought it was perfect, but it is probably fun to play. When it drops the price to a sensible one, i might try it.

Shit, i thought you were being sarcastic here-

" First of all WHERE THE FUCK IS Super Street Fighter IV?!?!?!??  This is gunna be like the only must required game to be bought by every human being alive in 2010.

Well that's how i feel about mafia 2, haha. Just goes to show you. realistic fantasies, or fantastic fantasicies, both can be as equally believable although.

and actually man in all honesty, the only final fantasy i've ever palyed was that gamecube one, crystal chronicles. I did quite enjoy that, mainly for the co-op.  same friend that had that game, also had SSTF 2 or something for the superNES and i played it once or twice on a bored day.

For me its mainly ME2, but seeing as that game is so close I'm sure there are some others I'm just not thinking of atm.  I dont think I care about a single game you listed, seems like a fairly boring list.  Obviously thats based on my tastes so dont take it as an insult.

Edit: FFXIII, Heavy Rain, and Alan Wake just came to mind.

Damn how could I forget:  Praying for The Last Guardian to release next year, that is by far my most anticipated game.

umm, ha, i think i've already said it's title. in like 8 different comments.
sure ill rent mass defect, and im sure it'll get a 9 no doubt. but mafia will get a 10. again, hold me to it. ill suffer shame and ridicule if i have to (let's be fair though...9.8- close enough?)
but i'm goin with the op here; the forgotten under dogs.

@murderbydeath

and that's fine, i'm just pointing out the obvious that we know man, trust me, we know about those games; everrrrybody and their cat wants them. let's see a little diversity, follow the leader.

You should have named your thread 'Top 10 Games I look Forward to in 2010' because that's really what this list is.
