Okay here is a list of the top 5 first person shooters
1. Killzone 2 - Because it was one of the first successful futuristic FPS
2. Left 4 Dead - because its mass killing zombies and francis hates vans
3.Call of Duty 4 - showed "Hollywood" story of the conflict in middle east
4. Fallout 3 - Combines FPS with RPG and 3rd person if u want.
5. Battlefield Bad Company - First game that i know of that has good destructible environments along with online play and good realism
Top 5 first person shooters and why

I'll be playing Fallout in third person, since I really can't stand the FP perspective in video games. It just feels less immersive which is odd, seeing as how you're looking through the eyes of the character. Its not a bad list though, other than the fact that you have a months old game on top. You should probably wait a few years before proclaiming it the best fps. (your explanation doesnt make any sense. Halo was the first successful futuristic FPS, no matter what you think of the series)
A list of top 5 first person shooters and you included Fallout 3 (which is NOT a FPS) instead of Halo 3? Sorry but that mishap right there, invalidates your entire list I feel.
I am not much of a Halo 3 player or fan, but I recognize its significance. Also, Fallout 3 is in no way a First person or third person shooter. Whatever one thinks, it is still an RPG.

Killzone 2 came out this year, and futuristic FPS games have been happening... well, forever.
"nordicavenger said:Bog, your points on 1,2, and 4 are pretty strong, but 3 and 5 seem to be personal opinion. (just saying, dont hit me plz)"Okay here is a list of the top 5 first person shooters1. Killzone 2 came out this year, and futuristic FPS games have been happening... well, forever.2. Left 4 Dead is great, but second best FPS of all time? It isn't even Valve's best.3. I'm just not a CoD fan.4. If you like Fallout 3 for it's FPS elements, then you just destroyed any and all possible credibility. As an FPS, you could compare this game to rotten milk.5. Didn't play it, but I don't know how you can justify naming it in your top 5.If you just started playing video games last year I'll understand, but otherwise... I don't know."
"Point 2 is pretty personal as well. Tell me, can you see the justification of BF:BC on a top 5 list? The same situation as L4D applied here, as It's not even the best Battlefield game."Nope, absolutely can not. I played BF:BC and although it was enjoyable, and some of the writing gave me a chuckle as far as the gameplay goes... it was really generic I felt. Mainly the shooting and gunplay. The exploding buildings were fun, but I noticed that the farther I got into and through the game, there were more noticeable parts that were not destroyable.
1.Cod4
2.Goldeneye 007
3.Half Life /2
4.Quake
5.Doom
That would be mine. No halo because it takes a lot from other fps that did it well on thier part and made it into a game. No Timesplitters on there because it takes from where goldeneye left off.COD4 because it takes everything from all those games including the COD franchise and sets the bar For FPS.
I kind of cheated with Half life /2 because they both invented and reinvented some things, both worthy to be on the list.
Quake because what it did for Online Multiplayer.
Doom because it made them popular, more so than wolfenstien.
i agree with Killzone 2 and COD4, i don't know about the others though. maybe Halo 1 should be on the list (i can't believed i said it). and Half Life
"So let me get this straight:1.Cod4
"
2.Goldeneye 007
3.Half Life /2
4.Quake
5.Doom

COD4 is one of the best shooters because it takes everything from all the great shooting games.
Halo is not one of the best shooters because it takes too much from other great shooting games.
... Ok.
I think the problem is that a list of 5 is too short and important games have to be left off.
Everyone has their own criteria for a 'top' list. Here's mine...
1: Half-Life
2: Doom
3: Counter-Strike
4: Half-Life 2
5. Goldeneye
I personally think that the genre is looking incredibly tired after 15+ years, and needs a influx of fresh ideas to keep it afloat. Far Cry 2 was an interesting attempt at something different, and the upcoming first-person MMOs may give the genre a boost as well.
For the XBOX 360 (I don't play on PC and don't own a PS3. I haven't played Killzone 2 but i believe it is as good as Call of Duty 4):
1. Halo 3
2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
3. Half Life 2 and it's episodes
4. Call of Duty: World at War
5. Batlefield Bad Company
PS.: main criteria was good controls. I have played them all to completion.
This seems like a list from someone who just got into gaming and has only played those five [well, four, Fallout 3 doesn't even fit the criteria for this list] FPS games and nothing else.
Quake, Half-Life, Goldeneye, Halo and TF2 would probably be a bit closer, as I match "best" with "most influential or groundbreaking."
Quake because it set the pace for, or arguably created the "deathmatch" concept that games like UT honed closer to perfection.
Half-Life because of what it did for storytelling in the genre.
Goldeneye because, even though it wasn't excellent compared even to other FPS's of the time, it was on a console and broadened the genre's appeal
Halo for almost identical reasons, but it came at a more important time, given that gaming was beginning to breach the mainstream a bit more.
The final spot is kind of a cop-out, TF2 showed that even after ten years of rocky development, Valve could release a game that captured the spirit of the original, but added so much, along with fine-tuning the experience immensely. I'm still not sure if it deserves a spot on the list of "top five ever," but it accomplished its goal wonderfully.
Also, to be a complete hater after rational discussion: I don't like your list and I think that it sucks.
Wouldn't really call FO3 a FPS, but whatever. For me:
1) Half-life series
2) America's Army - can't wait for 3.0
3) L4D - too little content but oh so unique and fun otherwise
4) Duke Nukem 3D - someone needs to bring humour back to fps, no more mute characters with the personality of a potato a la freeman or masterchief
5) AvP2 - The last truly scary FPS, needs a worthy sequel so badly.
"Okay here is a list of the top 5 first person shooters
1. Killzone 2 - Because it was one of the first successful futuristic FPS
Uh... what? Doom? Halo? Hello?
2. Left 4 Dead - because its mass killing zombies and francis hates vans
I like L4D too, but not for this reason. It's the purest form of Co-op play available, however.
3. Call of Duty 4 - showed "Hollywood" story of the conflict in middle east
That's not the reason I'd have expected, but okay...
4. Fallout 3 - Combines FPS with RPG and 3rd person if u want.
As already stated, Fallout 3 is not an FPS. It's an FPS the same way as Oblivion is when you use bows.
5. Battlefield Bad Company - First game that i know of that has good destructible environments along with online play and good realism
Ever played Red Faction?"
