Two game genres that go great together?

There have been some games in the past decade or so that take two pretty much unrelated game ideas and mash them together, to great results. Combine a fantasy RPG with Bejeweled/match-3 gameplay, and you get Puzzle Quest. Combine a platformer with a rhythm game, and you get Bit.Trip Runner and HarmoKnight. Combine a horse racing game with solitaire (speed solitaire?) and you get Pocket Card Jockeys.

What has been your favourite of these weird genre mashups? Or, what weird genre mashup would you like to see happen that hasn't been tried yet?

This might not fit your criteria, but I really like a mix of rogue-like with some permanent progression like risk of rain or rogue legacy.

Crypt of the necrodancers combination of rythm game and rougelite was pretty good.

I'm going to say RPG tropes into every other genre. Open worlds, leveling and skill trees, dialog choices, saved progression, loot. Ideas that originated in RPGs have made just about every other genre of game better in some ways.

Unfortunately, they've also made just about every other genre of game worse. Too many games are fucking bar-filling simulators these days. Especially on mobile. Fuck that shit.

You brought up a similar game, but I think one of the best games to not be expanded on in recent years is HoM&M: Clash of Heroes, which is Match Three meets a SRPG.

Killer7 is an on-rails shooter combined with an adventure game.

I enjoyed Hands of Fate a lot, a roguelike cardgame mixed with batman combat.

And anyone remember Baten Kaitos ? I LOVED that game back when it came out, havent gone back to it since then. I remember hating the horribly recorded and/or compressed english vo but REALLY liking the card combat mixed with the standard J-RPG-ing. I wonder if it holds up....

Never got to the 2nd Baten Kaitos game(On wii? Not sure......) but Ive only heard bad things about it..

We need more cards in games, and by that I mean real card mechanics and not dumb cardstuff as in Battlefront or Halo5.

MMO design in other games. More or less adding endgames to games. I really, really fucking enjoy that shit. Destiny and Diablo have done it best for me so far.

And yeah, Killer 7 is really something else. It's just insane that Capcom ever greenlit and continued to fund such an aimless (?), stream of consciousness, oddly structured sort-of survival horror sort-of rail shooter thing. Also, one of the playable characters in that game just says "You're FUCKED" every time you kill an enemy by shooting them in the weak point. Keep in mind this was novel at the time, and there are 6 other main characters with different personalities from this guy, whereas now every main character of a Suda 51/Grasshopper game is basically that guy.

Banjo Kazooie + Vehicle Building = Nuts 'N' Bolts

Real Time Action + Deck Building = Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

Heroes w/ Abilities + Shooter = TF2 & Overwatch

Dice Rolling + Card Game = YuGiOh Dungeon Dice Monsters. I remember loving this weird new format of the game when I was a kid.

@lestephan: If you want card combat, check out Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, regardless of whether you're a KH fan or not. It's plenty enjoyable without the story. There's also the Re: version which is 3D on ps2 if you can manage to get a hold of it, which was a blast! It's also got a (kinda) new game+ that lets you play as the anti-hero who has a whole slew of new move sets.

@artisanbreads: That game will never get the love it deserves. I've played through it at least twice a year since its release. It's so good.

No one had made a great shoot and loot until Borderlands. Yes, I know Hellgate was a thing, but come on.

Also, Spore's ideas of combining create-a-character/ship/etc. with varied gameplay types for each level of existence was pretty innovative.

Shooter + Adventure game = Metroid Prime.

I'd like to see Brawler + RPG. (Yakuza kind of does that and to some extent games like Double Dragon etc. but I mean something more robust)

First Person Shooter/Brawler + Platformer = Mirror's Edge. I really loved that first game.

Wait, I'm not the only one that does this? Every summer for the past 5 years I've played through San Andreas.

@bisonhero: I've never played Zeno Clash. I've always found it super interesting though. The world just seems crazy.

TBS + RTS: Total War, even when the games themselves vary in quality a lot

It's criminal no one has made a game with that basic gameplay. I would love a genuine RPG (like Final Fantasy Tactics esque) with that gameplay. I've been learning to program for a while and dabbled in trying to do it myself even.

Totally with you guys on the unsung nature of Clash of Heroes. That game is alllllllllllright.

I'm a pretty big fan of the concept behind Recettear (Store Management game + RPG) even if the actual game didn't hold my interest for super long. I guess I could say the same thing about Fantasy Life while I'm at it since that game works on a similar bent.

Third person open world game + photography. Basically imagine GTA without the gun violence and when you switched to your camera it would be limited to your character's first person perspective. But I would want the camera to have realistic settings. Also, maybe a tech upgrade path as you move up in popularity, you get access to better (or more specialized) camera equipment (maybe even a drone eventually to break free from your character's perspective completely).

@lestephan:If your into card games you should try out Yomi on Steam, it's a really good fighting game/card game.

@pezen I'm still crying from nintendo's refusal to make another pokemon snap.
