so ive been looking through my collection of games and ive noticed not all are the same. for some games came in diffrent colors or the cases have diffrent designs. for example, zelda for the NES has the gold cartridge and donkey kong 64 has a bright yellow one. what are some of your guys favorites and do you wish they did more of them?

Sonic & Knuckles had the crazy lock on technology that would've been neat to see again. Granted, it basically cut Sonic 3 in two, but still!

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on the N64 was blue. I think I have a white or beige Atari 2600 cartridge but I can't remember which game it is at the moment.

If I remember correctly, the backs of some PS2 games were blue. I have no clue why.

They were some special version of CD. I think they were only early ps2 games though.

I think my favorite cases are the early Playstation ones. There's no real reason to why I like them so much, I just do. I always liked them back in the day too, so it's not just nostalgia. I also like the large jewel case versions, but those would almost instantly crack.

I remember one of the Micro Machines games on the Mega Drive where the cart had two controller ports build in so you could play with 4 players without the need of a multitap.

DOOM on the SNES had a red cartridge. Not sure if that was US-exclusive or not; I have a US copy but not an EU copy.

I think my favourite from the NES-era was the bootleg shit that Codemasters pulled with Micro Machines, namely, this monstrosity:

@peritus: This is the DOOM one. A search shows that in Europe it got a regular cartridge, thus making it 1000% less awesome.

Super Noah's Ark 3D was a bootleg-ass Wolfenstein reskin, and as a result, required another legit game be plugged into the top of it for it to work.

They also made this ghetto blue NES cart:

@believer258: I believe the blue discs were CD-Roms, and the silver ones were DVD-ROM. Although that could be bad speculation but I believe I looked into it at some point.

This thread made me want to check out Pokemon Crystal on Ebay. Some assholes are selling some homebrew counterfeit game called "Crystal Shards Version", which I guess is a pokemon Emerald hack dumped onto a GBA cart.

It booted the legit cart to get past Nintendo's lockouts for bootleg games and then loaded the other game.

@Jams:

I'm guessing that it had some sort of security lockout similar to the 10NES chip on the original Nintendo, and the only way they could figure out a workaround was to get a real game to bypass it.

I don't know if this really counts or not, but one of the things that makes Famicom collecting fun is that there was no real universally used cartridge type; game publishers also manufactured their own carts, so there's a lot of variation in both color and shape between companies.

On that note, the early Konami carts with the large wraparound label and often painted artwork are my favorite designs from any gaming era. I grabbed a mostly random selection of carts based on visual differences, but it's no coincidence Konami gets some heavy lovin' in these pictures.

I loved my yellow Donkey Kong 64 cartridge. Probably the best of the colored carts.

EA didn't want to pay Sega's cart licensing thing so Sega decided to allow them to use their own carts as long as it was distinctly different.

haha sure I guess but the way it's put on the cart it always seemed like some kind of release or something. But yeah just a weird yellow tab.

Got a couple color cartridges in my collection: Red Maximum Carnage (Genesis) , Yellow Donkey Kong 64 and Black Killer Instinct to name a few. I don't have anything that's totally boot leg looking or weird. I've got Pokemon Pinball with it's battery slot and Sonic and Knuckles with it's lock on slot though.
