I will post a song from one of my favorite Genesis games: Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja Master
Video Game Music!!!!!! List some of your favorites!!
I still say that Rocket Knight Adventures has the single best soundtrack in gaming history.
EDIT: Argh! can someone tell me how they got the Youtube embed to work? I get the pop-up, paste the code, and then nothing happens.
" @TonyBlue87: Wow, you actually know about that game. I thought I was the only one who played that back in the day! Seriously though, the graphics and sound in that game are phenomenal. I couldn't believe some of the stuff they were pulling off with the music on my Genesis. "Know about it?! That game is one of my top picks for best game in history. I actually sat down and played through it again a few days ago. The music is still catchy as hell (especially the flying sequence in level 1), and it still retains a lot of it's difficulty and charm. I was mesmerized as a kid, and I still get a huge smile on my face when the Level Intro screen pops up.
Been itching to finish up NieR recently and I just gotta say, the music in that game was pretty tops. Specifically for me this tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5mPCthvieI
The song from the end credits of Persona 3 fes. I cried when I first beat the game and heard it. I dont seem to be able to post the video so I'll just link it. Persona 3 - memories of you

Persona 3 - memories of youLol, I was just coming in to say the entire soundtrack for regular Persona 3 (I havent played FES). This one's one of my more recent favorites
Donkey Kong Country 2: "Stickerbrush Symphony"
Super Mario RPG: "Beware the Forest's Mushrooms"
That's quite enough, I think. Each of those games has more excellent tracks, but these are some of my favorites.
This defines the Mass Effect universe for me, I love it.
" I would never buy and listen to it out of context, but the original Starcraft had a really powerful soundtrack. "
Yes the original StarCraft had a varied and great soundtrack that - as you said, wasn't something you really could listen to out of the game, but that just fitted perfectly to the races and gameplay.
Am I the only one who really didn't like the StarCraft II soundtrack though? A lot of reviewers seemed to love it, but it just sounded like a extremely generic "epic movie soundtrack" to me, while the original Star Trek soundtrack really went for a unique style, and had very different music for the different races.
here is some of the more newish choons...
Mass Effect - Uncharted Worlds
Mass Effect - Battle At Eden Prime
Mass Effect 2 - The End Run ...shivers....must, resist, epicness
Mass Effect 2 Afterlife Techno choon
FFX-2 - Eternity: Memory of Lightwaves
MGS4 - Metal Gear Saga Harry Gregson-Williams knows epic
....to name a few
In regards to game music GamesRadar frequently has nice picks on their site. Just a tip...
My personal favorite is...
On a related note... Palette-Swap Ninja has some really great covers with gaming related lyrics. This one is my favorite of the bunch...
Seriously guys! Learn to spell!
Otherwise, Final Fantasy VI must be the game with the most epic tunes ever (Link to a Youtube Playlist with the entire 64 track OST - listen in!).
" I still say that Rocket Knight Adventures has the single best soundtrack in gaming history. EDIT: Argh! can someone tell me how they got the Youtube embed to work? I get the pop-up, paste the code, and then nothing happens. "Sorry about your Youtube embedding problems, but I'll take care of that for you. (Also, Rocket Knight Adventures is one of the most underrated games of all time. Seriously, loved just about everything about that game & got so excited when Rocket Knight was released on XBLA/PSN this year.)
This one is one of my all time favourites. Too god damn short, though. It's awesome as it is, but everytime it ends, I wish there was more...

I really prefer the 8bit and 16bit music. Creativity was needed to make great music within the limitations of the technology. Now they have no limitations, but yet resort to generic orchestral themes straight out of movies.
