This list as a whole needs more indie games. I played just as much if not more of them this generation.
Honorable Mentions:
Looking through these lists, and thinking about my own top ten list, I came to a very strange realization. If I were to make a list of my top ten games of all time, not a single current gen game would be on it. Games like Diablo 2, WoW, Halo, Civ III, Morrowind, etc... would pretty easily beat out almost any game I can think of that came out this console generation. I'm not going to say that this generation was bad, but the only game I can think of that REALLY stands out for me is Dark Souls.
This was a tough one.
Aaaand some games that I feel awful about not being able to include in a top ten list
In no particular order.
Demon's souls
Bioshock 1 (infinite was close to beating this one)
Batman Arkham Asylum
Bayonetta
Gears of War 1
Mass Effect 1
Dead Space 1
Witcher 1 (nr 2 was awesome too)
Bad Company 2
Total War Shogun 2
Nr11: Dragon Age Origins
Honorable mentions:
Borderlands series
Orcs must die series
Black Ops MP
DMC:DmC
Space Marine
Twilight Princess
Vanquish
Sleeping Dogs
Darksiders Series
Nier
The Darkness 2
Etc.
This is... kinda tough. Maybe something like this, although I feel like I haven't had adequate time to let some of them soak in just yet, while some of them I feel are just nostalgia for the things that I wasted time on in high school:
1. Mass Effect 2
2. Braid
3. Fallout 3
4. Portal
5. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
6. Supreme Commander
7. Rainbow 6: Vegas
8. Super Mario Galaxy
9. Rock Band
10. Uncharted 2: Among Theives
@karkarov Yeah, I might have been a bit hasty with The Walking Dead. It's bumped off the list now, anyway, with DOTA being added. I actually wrote a long tirade about how influential Minecraft is, but in the interest of everyone I'll enclose it in spoiler tags so you don't have to read it. TL;DR: It deserves its spot.
Oh make no mistake I think Minecraft definitely should be on a top 10 list of most influential games this gen. I am just not sure it should be that high. That said I love mucking around on Cube World I just wish I knew more people who played it cause most people look at me with a blank stare when I talk about it.
A hasty list, but i think its close, will try to refine it sometime later. Distilling an entire generation into a list of only 10 is hard.
Replace Borderlands 2 with Metal Gear Solid 4
Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Spec Ops, Max Payne 3, Civ 5, Batman Arkham City.......so many good games this generation, that is something i think we can all agree on.
Another generation coming to a close. It had its moments I suppose. Considering I only bought a PS3 to play MGS4, I'm pretty pleased with how it all turned out.
1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
2. Super Street Fighter 4
3. Wipeout HD Fury
4. Borderlands
5. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
6. Resident Evil 5
7. Hotline Miami
8. DIRT 3
9. Dead Nation
10. Bayonetta
Edit: OP, disregard this when it comes time to tally these. My real answer is below.
These aren't a list of my favorite games, but a list of what I think are the objectively most important and influential games of the generation, spanning all genres. There were certain games that were absolutely amazing, and sold extraordinarily well, but they were nothing more than fun diversions (lots of Wii and WiiU games fit into this category), rather than games that played an integral part in the industry's growth. I'd love to hear how people disagree with any of these, provided you aren't too confrontational or emotional. There are about a hundred games I'd put at the number '11' spot, so I'm glad this is limited to 10. I omitted any racing games because I really don't think the genre has progressed much at all in a really long time, excepting some creative online components from Burnout: Paradise. I also don't think either of the two GTA games this generation really took things too far in any direction. They were great games; but if I had to pin a medal to any "GTA-like" game it'd be Red Dead Redemption for its groundbreaking story arc... at spot '11.'
I never even owned CoD 4 or any of the Gears of War games, and didn't particularly love any of them, but its undeniable the influence the former has made to every first-person shooter since. And Gears of War spearheaded a huge advancement in third and first-person games with its cover mechanics (...even if Kill/Switch did do it first). I'd have put Gone Home on my list, but I'm just not sure of the importance of that game in the long run, so soon after its release. The GB community knows enough about games to guess why the rest were put on the list.
I'm not sure I'd call The Walking Dead influential, at least not yet. I'd probably replace it with Heavy Rain (or rather Fahrenheit, but that was the previous gen), which I think strongly influenced Telltale in the creation of Jurassic Park: The Game, a concept which they then refined for The Walking Dead. They are still essentially using the mechanics and narrative method that David Cage pioneered in his games, even it could probably be argued that Telltale are doing it better.
EDIT: Weird, seems like I got a cached page when I replied to this
In no particular order:
The Shadowrun FPS was great, it didn't make my list, but it's good to see it getting some recognition!
Wow man I have to distill the last 6 years of my life down into this small window of time fuck man okay i'll do it
This list will most likely change
I'm putting my money on Dark Souls to win the whole thing here.
1. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
2. Dark Souls
3. Red Dead Redemption
4.Metal Gear Solid 4
5. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
6. Super Mario Galaxy
7. Zelda: Twilight Princess
8. Rock Band
9. Lost Odyssey
10. Chromehounds (I really wonder if I will be the only person to put this)
This gen is so long that it makes it really tough. I really don't feel good about this list since I feel like I've barely scratched the surface on this gen compared to previous ones. There probably ought to be some DS games on this list since OP said they are fair game, but I just don't consider them to be the same.
Someone said that these lists basically become a what's obvious hits list when amalgamated to some degree and I agree with that. Where people's list might get really interesting is 11-30 or so and you might see significantly more variation there.
1. Rocksmith 2014
2. Fallout New Vegas
3. Left 4 Dead
4. Street Fighter 4
5. DOTA 2
6. Portal 2
7. XCOM Enemy Unknown
8. iRacing
9. Company of Heroes
10. Batman: Arkham Asylum
I could have pretty easily just made this a top 5, but I wasn't sure it was allowed:
I know that Persona 3 probably shouldn't count, so if not, feel free to omit it at #1 and bump the rest of the list accordingly.
Most surprising game this generation for me is Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. It's this generation's Secret of Mana for me. I've waited almost 2 decades for a game to kinda hit that same spot.
1. Dark Souls
2. Saints Row The Third
3. Hitman: Blood Money
4. Last of us
5. Max Payne 3
6. Far Cry 2
7. Uncharted 2
8. Mass Effect 2
9. L.A. Noire
10. Portal
It wounds me to not have room enough to include Alan Wake, Borderlands, Braid, Dustforce, GTA IV and L.A. Noire; but I guess I'm happy enough with my list as it stands.
In no real order.... and might not be set in stone.
Honorable Mentions:
I have a lot of catching up to do and I almost think its too early to make these lists... Having said that:

Well, I thought long and hard about it and here is my list (this took me way to long to make)
Edit: dropped Fez, added gone home and switched a few things around (making a top ten list makes me sad...)
It really crushed me to have to cut amazing games like Super Meat Boy, Fallout 3, Gone Home, Limbo, Hotline Miami, GTA4 etc. But I feel confident in these games being on my top 10. The ordering gets a little difficult because some games I liked equally, but I caved in and ordered it properly, and I'm happy with the list.
And I'll say it again; The Last of Us is a powerful, emotionally affecting, morally devastating game. Especially the winter segment of the game where shit gets fucking thrown up in the god damn air.
I am absolutely stunned that it could have had enough of effect on me to push something like mass effect 2 down a notch and knock GTA4 off the list, but it did; it really did. It's a fine example of so many pieces coming together to form a master class example of what the interactive arts can achieve.
I threw this list together. This isn't a complete best games of the generation list, but here's my HEY GUYS THESE ARE SOME GAMES FROM THIS GENERATION THAT TOUCHED ME IN PLACES THAT I'D NEVER BEEN TOUCHED BEFORE AND I LIKED IT list presented more or less in the order in which they popped into my head:
Many of those games, most notably Arkham Asylum and Mass Effect and Super Mario Galaxy, arguably touched me in places I had been touched before, but they touched me in new, exciting ways which made me feel like I'd been touched for the very first time.
I guess if I had to order it in some fashion it would look something like:
Ordered by some rough estimation of freshness, mind-blowndedness, fun factor, tilt, the amount of money the developers of each game sent me to include them on this prestigious list, and most importantly the extent to which each game was able to fill the hole in my heart where friendship, love, and happiness are supposed to be found.
Welp. Here Goes...
1. Saints Row the Third
2. Mass Effect
3. Bioshock
4. Battlefield: Bad Company 2
5. Assassin's Creed II
6. Gears of War 2
7. Red Dead Redemption
8. Uncharted 2
9. Skyrim
10. Fallout: 3
1. Dark Souls
2. Mass Effect 2
3. Rock Band 3
4. Persona 4/P4G (yes this totally counts, it my not have been on the consoles of Gen 7, but it came out well into the gen so I count it)
5. No More Heroes
6. Batman: Arkham Asylum
7. Saints Row: The Third
8. Bioshock 1/Infinite
9. Portal 1 or 2
10. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Back half of the list.
11. Mortal Kombat
12. Dead Space 2
13. Fallout 3
14. Bastion
15. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
It might be a little pre-emptive for this (Dark Souls II is still to come after all!), and I also think it's a little weird to include both 2005 and 2013 for PC games (2005 is basically the 2013 of "Gen 6," but I digress). But what the hell, let's do this:
1. The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
2. Mass Effect 2
3. BioShock
4. Borderlands
5. Red Dead Redemption
6. Halo 3
7. Dragon Age: Origins
8. Gears of War Trilogy
9. The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
10. Scribblenauts
Honorable Mentions
L.A. Noire
Vanquish
Guild Wars 2
Fallout 3
Mass Effect
Fight Night Round 3
