I think it's hilarious. Who would've thought one of time's top 50 websites would run shitty ass ads you see on shady torrent and streaming sites? I can just picture what people think when they come here for the first time and see that shit.
Wow, those are some extremely poor ads, I hope that stuff stops showing up for you guys a.s.a.p. I remember there was a case with some poor quality adverts like these on the site once before and one of Whiskey came out and said they'd been experimenting with a new 3rd party ad provider they were finding unsatisfactory. I don't know if that experimentation is still going on or this is a new particularly poor 3rd-party provider but this shit is wack!
I want shitty ads to at least recognize what operating system I'm running/what skin I'm using. Dear lord. I had almost forgotten that blue Windows XP theme. Now it's back to haunt me.
As much as it sucks... I would rather have these dopey ads than full-page takeovers with auto playing video that manages to make any website run like ass.
That said... I am a yearly subscriber so I don't see the ads that often except when I am feeling particularly lazy.

That is super, super shitty. I almost feel bad for you dudes- they really should do something about this- I loved what they did with the ODST adds when that came out, I wish they could do more stuff like that.
We had a similar discussion over on the Tested Boards. Will made some great points about why these ads are how they are because of the way the advertising market is right now.
I get the ads too and aren't all that pleased with them, so consider this post adding to the "noise" in hopes that somebody important gets the fucking point here.
Remember when Jeff said they would be selective about the site's adds, only having ones that "pertained to our interests"?. Well that surely went down the drain. I turned ad block back on months ago because of this shit.
He also said when the site launched that your GB account wouldn't automatically turn into a Comic Vine account as well, even though the sites are related. I don't remember the exact quote, but it was something close to "We aren't building some dumb network here." The unified accounts aren't quite that, but I did get wary when they were first introduced. So far, Whiskey still feels much more like a family of sites rather than the strictly business thing CNET has going on (which is what I'm sure they wanted to avoid).
What bothers me are the ads on the live stream. It's "Premium Content", I'm already paying for it, why do I need to get these horrible ads?
I've always been told it was Justin.tv, not Giant Bomb, that was in charge of ads for live streaming content.
And yeah, those ads, especially the last, are pretty tasteless. I hope your financial situation puts you in a position to subscribe soon OP. Probably a better investment than I realized on my college student budget.

I feel like this community (and the internet) doesn't understand how and why they use ads. Jeff isn't sitting in his room going "Okay, big ass shot on the right, a nice 'new friend facebook banner there...", ect. They have pre-selected space on their layout they give Google Adsence, and adsense chooses the ads. Whiskey Media can actively pick whole page ads and ads before the videos, and that still means it really isn't up to Jeff and the gang but the owners/marketing dudes.
Before the membership stuff came up, Giantbomb was costing Whiskey Media money. No ads, no membership plan, pretty large equipment/bandwidth overhead ect. How long do you think a company can keep funneling money into a big website that can't sustain itself? 4 or 5 years? That is why I signed up for membership. I would rather pay 60$ a year and know that I am actively contributing to Giantbomb's longevity than have the site be free and know that in a few years the company will be gone.
