So lately I've been looking for games to play when I'm extremely tired or half focused. I've wanted to have several games to play while listening to podcasts or when I'm unwilling to exert any mental effort. The main selling point is that it has to be easy to pick up gameplay, with little emphasis on story or atmosphere. I started Borderlands with the intention of doing this, but I could never bring myself to actually enjoy it. So I have come to the Giant Bomb forums, asking those with much more experience than me for suggestions.

What systems do you own?

Trials Evolution seems this way. I've only played the demo, though.

Geometry Wars.

Not these games. Not to me anyway. They are far to hectic to be mindless.

I would say Journey, Flower, Beyond Good and Evil, Enslaved, the two DeBlob games, and Kameo come to mind.

There is nothing more mindless than a Dynasty Warriors title.

  • The Binding of Isaac
  • Terraria
  • Torchlight
  • Pac-Man CE DX
  • Tetris
  • Geometry Wars
  • Jamestown

Edit: I could have kept going, but then I stopped caring.

This. Popcap games are the way to go. Stuff like Geometry wars, binding of Isaac take a lot of focus if you want to have fun with them. Peggle and Plants vs Zombies is easy fun when you are tired

The last game I played for this very situation is Realm of the Mad God. It's a very...unique game, but it definitely fits the "mindless" bill. Especially if you roll into a Death Train with everyone else on a map.

My mindless fun game is Gran Turismo 5 but since you don't have a PS3 I guess Forza 4 is pretty much the same thing. Also Dead Island doesn't require too much thought and is fun to just wonder around and whack zombies.

This man speaketh the truth. I play the Dynasty Warrior titles in the exact way you're describing, half switched off while listening to podcasts.

Binding of Isaac is pretty much my go-to game whenever I'm bored and have 10-30 minutes to spare.

Tropico 4 is nice. I usually play this game when hung over with a nice 2 litre bottle of ice cold coka cola, while waiting for my big mac to arrive.

I second Dead Rising 2. It's mindless fun to see how many zombies you can kill. Also Zuma which was one of the first 360 Arcade games is pretty addictive.

@Willin: Just Cause 2 really is the poster-child of "mindless fun" games. I came into this thread expecting people would have recommended it right off the bat, and was shocked to see it absent from the first page. The fact it's also dirt cheap at this point makes it a perfect title to pick up and enjoy without having to feel any commitment to it.

#28 Posted by Deathmachine117 (376 posts) -

Just Cause 2, The Saboteur, Dead Rising 1 or 2, Saints Row 1,2,3 and Red Faction Guerrilla. Any really open world or sandbox games would do for mindless fun.

I play turn based strategy games while listening to podcasts. It requires some concentration, but the pace is set by you.

I would agree. Also, Civ 5.

Just turn down the difficulty and enjoy your mindless fun.
