After buying Shadows of the Damned based on the Bombcast crews recommendation and having a blast.  I was wondering what other hidden gems have I missed out on.
Please don't post Deadly Premonition or Earth Defense Force because those are talked about so much by numerous game forums that they lost their hidden gem status.

Bad Company 1 has one of the best cast of characters in any video game I have ever played, but it never gets talked about. That's about all I can think of for consoles since I'm a PC guy.

Lords of Shadow is a good one that's worth checking out

Vanquish is a terribly underrated game.

#5 Posted by Grissefar (2337 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Valkyria Chronicles is probably the definition of gem.

You all may laugh at me BUT...

There were a few WiiWare games that were lost in the shuffle.  The two LostWinds' games are really good as is NyxQuest (which you can get on PC as well).   VVVVV on PC is great and Muramasa on the Wii is also really good.  Not many people played it for good reason but Mirror's Edge really can be a lot of fun at times.  Plus, you can get it really cheap (all versions of the game are under $10 used and $20 new at Amazon).

Call of Juarez; Bound In Blood was a really fun game with a surprisingly good story.

I will also echo vanquish. Dark Sector was quite good too.

Modern Warfare 2 and halo reach

Correct.
Vanquish is a wonderful game - I really wish more people played it/paid attention to it.

Singularity, Nier and Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom are a few games I thought were pretty good but probably didn't do well sales-wise.

Cryostasis.

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts is amazing. It is a true marriage of user-created content and gameplay. You can beat challenges by pure gameplay skill if you want (for a weaker experience), but the triumph is that if you are creative about solving a problem you can build a vehicle that solves it easily. The latter is a satisfaction I don't get from any other game.

Completely agree. Awesome game. Shame the sequels are on PSP. Here's hoping one day they release them for PS3.

@Maajin said:

Very much under rated. Crap characters but the action, set pieces and boss fights are definitely worth the price of admission.

Can get both of these real cheap now as well.

@bartok: I don't know which console you have but if you have PS3 and like RPG, Valkyria Chronicle is actually a really good game. It's too bad that it went under the radar but it is a solid RPG game that needs to be more recognized

#18 Posted by TheBootlegSaint (26 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Enslaved was a great game that didn't get much success commercially.

#19 Posted by jozzy (2033 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Definately Nier, great game. Vikings: Battle for Asgard is a delight too if you are a fan of brutal vikings.

Fragile Dreams. The fact that I was the first one to post it kinda proves my point.

I nominate Greed Corp as being the best/most overlooked game of this generation. Still doesn't live up to last generation's best/most overlooked game, though.

Yup.

Valkyria Chronicles

Vanquish

To the guy who said Bad Company, are you kidding? Amazing game, but that's the definition of a blockbuster success... Nothing "hidden" about that gem.

I know it has it's problems and some people don't like it but I loved the saboteur. It was something about that game that just clicked with me.

I bought that game after the comments on one of your blogs!

I still haven't played it yet!

:(

On topic, I'm gonna throw out Valkyria Chronicles. Everyone should own this game.

(Also, the Wizardry game that is available on the PS Store but I doubt there are too many people into that kind of gameplay)

#29 Posted by Giantstalker (1247 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Not sure if it's new enough, but on the PC, I feel World in Conflict deserved to be more popular than it was. It never even got a sequel or anything. Such a great game though.

I'll also echo sentiments about Vanquish, that game's a blast but it never got anything close to Bayonetta-levels of fame.

Valkyria Chronicles (the first one) is another game I see people posting, it's probably still the best strategic game on the PS3 for sure.

First one that springs to mind...

Culdcept Saga is pretty cool if you like weird card games. It's like a cross between Magic the Gathering and Monopoly. Yeah.

Also: I think a lot of people in this thread don't know what a "hidden gem" is.

#32 Posted by Afroman269 (7388 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

It's already been said but damn Banjo: Nuts and Bolts is so good.

Valkyria Chronicles, Ghost Trick, 999

Seriously, Ghost Trick is the most original game of this generation. There is literally nothing even remotely similar.

I never got BC1. I think BC2 is better in every way. BC1 I played through just to get it done before playing BC2 while BC2 I went right back in to play again on hard after finishing it. BC1 is mediocre while BC2 was an awesome game. And I'm talking both single player and multi player. But I guess it's kind of the Mass Effect thing were ME2 improved on pretty much everything but many still like ME1 more.

I'd like to add Import Tuner Challange to the list. Once you get past the weird physics of the cars it's oddly compelling to just cruise around the highways in Tokyo and challange random cars to battle.

Vanquish, some games get their "hidden" status out of being quirky whereas Vanquish is mechanically and technically superior to every other third person out there and hardly anyone even knows that it exists.

I would say The Club also, it's super simple, but it does what it does extremely well, definitely worth a look if you're a score junky like me.

The Ace Attorney games? :P

Um, seriously, Ghost Trick is my favourite game so far this year. I guess DS games get overlooked, generally =(

@dagas: I loved the needle health system and found it added a bit of strategy to the game, instead of when they just cloned the COD health system for two. Plus, I found the story progression and mission layout was a lot more enjoyable the first time around, and the second one felt like they were trying too hard to be COD in almost every mission. The first one felt like they just went out and tried to do their own thing, while the second was, as I have said already, was them trying to make Battlefield: COD Edition.

I just wish the first one had of come out on PC, because, as much as I enjoyed it, I hated needing to play it with the controller. So if I can enjoy the game as much as I did, despite being forced to play it with a controller, that really says something in my books.

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes for PSN and XBLA is a fantastic puzzle/RPG game. Not sure if it could be considered a "hidden gem" or not, but it's still a great game nonetheless.

There are so many to choose from so to help myself not get carried away I'll limit to one per system.

Wii

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

Yeah this game had some issues, most notably the chase sequences getting frustrated, but stick with it to the end for some awesome storytelling!

PS3/360

Mirror's Edge

It got a lot of buzz when it first came out but I feel like since then it's gotten a lot of undeserved hated. Yes, the shooting is bad and unnecessary and the trial & error can feel tedious to some but I love this game despite its flaws. Besides you can get it for less than $10 now.

DS

Lunar Knights

Kojima Productions' spiritual successor to the Boktai series. Awesome isometric action game with vampires fighting giant enemy crab bosses.

iOS

Shibuya

Got a lot of praise during last year's PAX since it was one of the PAX-10 btu for 99 cents this game has lots of replayability, a great soundtrack, and the kind of addictive Tetris-like gameplay that's easy to learn, hard to master.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was definitely the most under appreciated "hidden gem" of this console generation.

Actually, it sold a million. That's pretty good for a game of its type. It's just that nobody from the Giant Bomb staff played it because they were too busy playing non-Japanese games.

I don't know if this qualifies, but Alan Wake.

It reviewed pretty well but sold poorly, which is a damn shame because it's a fantastic game.
