I recently picked up Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken while it was on sale on PSN and I have to say the soundtrack is amazing and is all original and made for the game.

Some other soundtracks that stand out to me are the Bully soundtrack as well as the Socom 2 soundtrack.

What are some game soundtracks that you peeps have enjoyed?

Edit: include a link to one of the songs from the game so that the community can take a listen.

Silent Hill. No OST in particular, just all of the Silent Hills, preferably the Mary McGlynn tracks. That, and the Neverhood/Skullmonkeys soundtracks stand out as my all time favorites.

For individual tracks, allow me to introduce a VERY deep cut:

Original score I go with Silent Hill 2 and Mass Effect 2. My favorite soundtracks with licensed music is Brutal Legend and GTA: Vice City. Brutal Legend got me to listen rock/heavy metal bands. I like how the songs in Vice city were not instantly recognizable songs associated with 80s.

Chrono Cross' soundtrack is amazing. Like even if you're a hardcore CT fan and hate the game, I hope you can at least admit the soundtrack is good. I also really like a lot of the Silent Hill stuff. Probably my favorite thing about the games.

Lastly people are talking about Persona 3 and 4 but I like a lot of the other SMT games too.

Digital Devil Saga:

Digital Devil Saga 2:

Devil Survivor:

Persona 2:

I dig most of the Mass Effect tracks, definitely Silent Hill 2, and enjoy Digital Devil Saga's tunes. I definitely enjoy something fresh and unique, and non-repetitive. Love a game like Bayonetta, but get annoyed and mute it easily.

Edit: how the hell can I forget Portal 2? Brilliant stuff, from the funky little noises when you jump or slide around, even.

None of these really work outside of the context of the game they're in, but then again.. They're video game music. A game can make me accept profoundly cheesy shit as long as it's "in character".

Symphony of the Night and Chrono Trigger are probably my favorites, although there are quite a few other Castlevania games with plenty of great music as well. In terms of recent stuff, nothing beats Super Meat Boy for me. I mean, listen to this shit:

That's been my ringtone for the last year and I have no intention of changing it. EVER.

I carry the Machinarium soundtrack with me wherever I go. Similarly, PPPPPP is the best chiptunes album I have ever heard. I also like the Bastion, Braid, and Orange Box albums. Actually, I think I have a list knockin' about here somewhere.

Games With Great Soundtracks

Some music stays with you longer after you have stopped playing the game it was paired with. Here is a selection of my favourite tunes that, for one reason or another, I can't seem to stop listening to. Some of them are even free to download, take a peek...

1. Braid

Beautifully relaxing and mellow. Sleepy music for sleepy people.

2. Halo 3

One of the few games with a full orchestral score accompanying it, the music of the halo universe really is fantastic and fully lends itself to the epic scale of the franchise.

3. Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved

Upbeat electro chimes with pockets of tranquillity. Also it's free to download: http://cdn3.libsyn.com/godfree/46860_choices.mp3?nvb=20090113164217&nva=20090114164217&t=080756986ab0c8e4351de

4. Machinarium

A nice mix of everything with wonderful design and originality. Clinky robo music. Free bonus tracks: http://machinarium.net/blog/2009/11/22/free-machinarium-soundtrack-bonus-ep/

5. The Orange Box

With tracks from Half Life 2, Portal, and the crazy upbeat trumpets of Team Fortress 2, this OST has a bit of everything. Sounds great, and of course includes the mandatory "Still Alive" track from Portal.

6. VVVVVV

Fucking slick 8-bit electro magic. This music loops continuously throughout VVVVVV which might go a fair way to explaining why it's now embedded in my skull.

Oh, there you go.

As others have noted, Chrono Cross, despite being a pretty crappy JRPG and a terrible sequel to CT, has some GREAT tracks. Probably the best one is Time's Scar.

Following that one are some other great tracks: Dreams of the Shore Near Another World and Radical Dreamers

Say what you will about the game (it's not great), but the music is probably one of the best ever.

The Lost Vikings. The Genesis soundtrack had so much more groove than the SNES.

I've really gotten into the Bastion and Super Meat Boy OSTs lately as well.

The Portal 2 Soundtrack is really good. I have the entire thing on my iPod.

I'm also quite the fan the fan of the Sonic 2 soundtrack.
