Something very funny, that made you laugh so hard that your maxillary blocked and you couldn't close your mouth. I saw yesterday The Heat, I haven't seen for a while such comedy. They don't make anymore comedies with good dark sense of humor, like it was in Not another teen age, the Scary Movie series, the first parts of American Pie, Miss March, Friday series, How High, Harold and Kumar (the last part was a disaster) and those guys down there, they are legendary ! I like Hangover and Ted but they don't reach up that high.

I think you have horrible taste in movies. The scary movies series...seriously? that's the standard you judge movies by?

I mean no offense ...To each their own i guess.

Ghostbusters is still my favorite movie of all time and is my go to, feel good movie when I want to instantly smile. I remember when my mom passed away I watched Ghostbusters at least 10-15 times it feels like. They aren't comedies but the Indiana Jones movies are the same way for me, instant feel good movies I can go to if I need a pick me up. In terms of comedies: Four Rooms, Clue, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Pink Panther, Step Brothers (pretty juvenile but I horse laugh at parts of this film), Anchorman, and a few others.

Also, I didn't know there were people who legitimately liked the "not another" or "scary movie" films. Interesting.

Shaun of the Dead is my go to, with Hot Fuzz a close second.

If I want classic comedies, I dip into some Mel Brooks classics like Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, or Space Balls.

@beyond_the_infinite: Is that the only thing you saw in my post ? because I see and remember writing other titles too, which are different from the Scary Movie series. Take in consideration the whole list if you want to search for "the standard" and you will see there's none. But I would make some standards in the comedy genre, if I would become a film lover. I don't have standards in cinematography, only amateur tastes and they are not limited. I can recognize a good comedy or a good joke in a movie, even if it will not make me laugh, I admire the originality and the content.

Tell me your fave comedies.

Comedies? I haven't seen a really good one in ages. Past films I've enjoyed include:

  • His Girl Friday
  • One, Two, Three
  • Arsenic and Old Lace
  • A Day at the Races
  • A Shot in the Dark
  • Blazing Saddles
  • Young Frankenstein
  • The Producers (original)
  • Airplane
  • Top Secret!
  • Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
  • Love and Death
  • When Harry Met Sally
  • Groundhog Day
  • Hot Fuzz
  • Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
  • Zack and Miri Make a Porno
  • Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle

Ah, I could go on and on, but that's more than enough. And for the record, I liked the 3rd and 4th Scary Movie.

For some reason or another, when I first saw Cabin Boy, I thought it was the funniest thing ever. I tried to re-watch it last year. Its really awful. Not awful-in-a-good-way awful, just awful.

I think my favorite comedy movie of all time is Weird Al's UHF. Despite being a tad racist, this still cracks me up everytime:

Games... Saints Row the Third. It's the only game of this generation I've played through more than once, and mostly for its humor. (Unless you count Nier which made me play through it more than once to see the bloody ending. Terrible design!)

McGruber is the alpha and omega of all comedy films.

The Accused is a close second on the laugh a minute scale.

The best recent comedy to come out is This is the End. Doesn't reach the highs of other movies done by those guys (super bad), but its pretty damn good.

@naru_joe93: This is the end was decent. I actually thought "The World's End" was quite a bit more hilarious, though.

Some of my friends felt weird afterwards, as they went into it thinking it was actually a pro-drinking movie, which is most definitely was not.

Alan Partridge: Alpha Puppa is the ONLY movie from this year that does this, this makes me sad :( Still it was an incredibly hilarious film, I smile thinking of the final 10mins of that movie.

That is a damn fine list. I would add "Fido" and the UK version of "Death at a Funeral." I also find "Fargo" to be hilarious.

@CommanderGarrus

The most recent comedy I watched was "FDR: American Badass." Not amazing, but definitely had it's moments.

If we push them obvious choices (Naked Gun 'n stuff) aside and count forwards from 2000s, I could list a few, that have at least stuck to my mind, even if not being all that great.

• Shaun of The Dead (2004)

• Borat (2006)

• Hot Fuzz (2007)

• Tropic Thunder (2008)

• Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)

• The Cabin In The Woods (2012)

Not too many...good thing we've still got funny tv-series and games.

The Jerk (Steve Martin) is a favorite of mine. Any Monty Python or Mel Brooks is good for a laugh too. Anchorman makes me smile, although it might be the only Will Ferrel movie that does that.

Anything with Leslie Nielsen or Mel Brooks involved. Some of my favourites include the Naked Gun series, Spaceballs and Airplane. I also liked the Hot Shots movies starring Charlie Sheen and Lloyd Bridges. I find modern day comedies are way too crude and dark with their humour while I prefer silly gags and more lighthearted jokes.

I'm always pretty excited when Hot Rod comes on. So underrated. Honestly, there are a TON of comedies I'm a big fan of. All of the McKay/Ferrel collaborations are great. Classics like Hot Shots, Spaceballs, UHF...more heartwarming fare like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles or Uncle Buck.

Some good dark comedy is most of the Coen brother movies. They're not laugh-out-loud funny, but they are hilarious and (in some parts) gruesome. Fargo is the prime example of this.

For more crazy funny comedy I always go for a Monty Python movie, The Holy Grail especially. For newer movies maybe one of Apatows stoner comedies. They're consistently pretty funny.

Some of the early Wayans stuff is still good too. Scary movie 1-2, Don't Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, and of course I'm Gonna Get You Sucka!

I haven't seen the new Simon Pegg movie, so his "duo-logy" of Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are in the upper echelon of comedy movies.

I feel the movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs doesn't get enough credit. When it came out in theaters the marketing didn't do much to get me interested in seeing it. I picked it up on DVD after hearing positive buzz about it. I don't ever do this, but I watched it about 4 times in the next week, I needed to show this brilliant movie to everyone I could and watch the commentary.

It has a super fresh, energetic, absurd sense of humor that really hit me. I found out later it was from the guys behind the super funny, but short lived, show Clone High.

Too often animated films just cast big stars to draw in a broad audience, the voice cast of this movie is full of super funny people and nerd icons like Bruce Campbell, Mr.T, Will Forte, Any Samberg, and Neil Patrick Harris.

@CommanderGarrus:

Oh i saw your list. It was atrocious to say the least. I just found the Scary movies to be the worst offenders of the bunch and didn't want to go on about the rest. Although i will say that Clerks was a great movie Clerks 2 was pretty good as well. I think if i was going to make a list of favorite comedy movies i would have to say that it would have to be based on what mood i am that day. Most days i like dark humor or some good dry British humor. Something that is a statement about society or the human condition is always welcomed.

A bad movie is something i can always watch and enjoy as long as it is not intentionally bad.

Many of the comedies by Brooks and Abrahams are among my personal favorites.

I consider Hot Shots 2, Mafia, Silent Movie, Spaceballs and Young Frankenstein among the best comedies of all times; and Naked Gun is simply a masterpiece.

In no particular order:

Airplane!

Animal House

Blues Brothers

Beverly Hills Cop

Shaun of the Dead

Anchorman

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Robocop (I really like the commercials and newscasts in the first two movies)

Young Frankenstein

Blazing Saddles
